Re: What Should Happen To Matt Cassell?

Unless he shows something in the next three preseason games, it is time to cut the ties. This guy has seemed to have regressed since last year.

On a side note, Chris Simms may be getting cut by the Bucs. I would love to see the Pats go after him for the #2 QB although he will probably want to go somewhere he can compete for the starting job.

I still think we need to get a veteran back up in here if Cassel can't turn it around. If we do, Belichick is going to have to make a tough decision about Gutieriez. Either he will have to keep for QBs or risk passing him through waivers and get him on the practice squad.

I still think as of right now we do not have a QB on our roster good enough or experienced enough to be a #2 QB.

Wonder what Papa Simms thinks of BB. :D

Re: What Should Happen To Matt Cassell?

It's too early to do anything, but I have a feeling what will happen is that he'll compete through pre-season and get released. He wouldn't bring anything in a trade.

What is the state of Simms' health? Wasn't he on IR last year?

Re: What Should Happen To Matt Cassell?

Exactly...

I have no idea why people keep talking about trading Cassell. He was a 7th rd pick who never started a college game who has gotten worse in each of the last 3 years...who would ever given anything up for him? It doesn't make sense. He will be released along with Guiterez and a veteran will be brought in for the #2 qb spot. It's not like these guys are going to be hard to cut...they have never done anything!

Burn him...he's a witch :)

our current backup QBs need to go because they are not dependable. We only need to keep our rookies QB to see if he's productive or not. I believe that our rookie will play a lot this year.

It would be nice to get a veteran QB to back up Brady, but there's not much out there. I think the jury's still out on Cassell. He's barely had a chance to play a down in the NFL. Maybe he's just plain awful, but maybe BB has seen something different. Otherwise he probably would have brought in a another backup with more experience prior to this year.

Or maybe, as you say, he's regressed and been so bad in TC that alarm bells are going off in the FO. I think he stays as the primary backup for now.

what did he last year other than scramble and run for first downs?

he had a meltdown in his prime opportunity in the miami game and miami ended up being the worst team.

Eh, just release Cassell. Like everyone said, he's done nothing but get worse over the past couple of years. Release him and Gut, sign a free agent veteran (ala Vinny in 2006), and keep K.O. on the roster.

He'll probrably end up going sooner or later. I wouldn't be too enthused to see Simms come in either should the Bucs cut him.

I don't understand why everyone thinks that the Patriots couldn't get any value for Cassell. I'd be willing to bet the Pats could get at least a keg of beer!

I agree that they need to go, but i'm not sure how much O'Connell will play this year. If he is palying, we are in big trouble. We need to find a back up for the season. Hopefully we won't need one though.

If the jury is still out on Cassell and Gutierrez, then why did the team spend a 3rd round draft choice on O'Connell?

I think we need to sign the best veteran backup available before Game 2 and waive both cassell and Gutierrez. Gut can go the Practice Squad.

To use a somewhat absurd example, if Chicago were to have (obviously inexplicably) traded Devin Hester to the Pats for the 5 and 7 the Pats used on Matt Slater, would you conclude that Ellis Hobbs sucked at kick returns?

IMO, you're assuming causation that doesn't necessarily exist. "They drafted O'Connell" doesn't necessarily lead to "The FO thinks Cassel and Gutierrez stink." Based on historical evidence, a more accurate conclusion would be "The FO felt that drafting O'Connell at that position offered more value than anything else they could do* with that pick."

*i.e., anyone else they could have drafted, or any trade that had been offered to them.

3rd rounders are drafted for starting potential. Are you saying Brady's getting cut?

Cassel looked poor but in his defense he played behind a makeshift line & had 3rd string receivers to throw to, CJ looked as bad. Give him a little more time( a couple of preseason) & if nothing develops cut him. There really is no rush if Brady goes down we are screwed anyway.
