The Pats may have made a misstep or two with Welker, but they pretty much knew he value of Welker and Welker and his agent didn't. If the rumors of Welker being offered three years for $24 million last summer were correct, it was Welker and his agent who screwed up. Not that he would have made a ton more at that contract, but he would have made than he is now by about $3 million.
I don't know if you can really blame one side on this issue. I think there were times that both sides could have made a deal that both sides would have been happy with. I see it just as much Welker's fault as the Patriots. Welker just thought he was going to get $8-9 million a year.
