I will leave out the defense because they had about 12 plays that could all be considered back breakers. I have absolutely no idea how they could blow coverage and miss tackles so many times. On offense, I am baffled by the following:
1. The single worst decision of the game was with the Patriots trailing 24-10 with 45 seconds left in the first half, ball on the 34 yard line, and first down, plus getting the ball to start th second half. Rather than secure the extra 10-15 yards to take the field goal, Brady inexplicably chucked the ball into the endzone three straight times. Clearly the stage was set for Gostowski to miss a 50-yard field goal. He didn't even need to kick it because I knew it was going to miss... the momentum was gone. Bad situational football.
2. I am all for going for it on fourth down, but trailing by 14 points in the 3rd quarter with plenty of time left, on the 15-yard line was a bad idea. First of all, 4 yards is not 1 yard. It's a passing play and lowers the percentage. But the much bigger issue is that even if you get the first down, there's a good chance you still won't get the touchdown. I felt the risk/reward there was a bad judgement. I understand 4th down calls when you are out of field goal range or within a few yards of the endzone...or within inches of a first down. At the 15, with 4 yards to go, I take the field goal.
3. Brady's first interception changed the makeup of the game, but most quarterbacks make several of those every game. It is always shocking when he makes a play like that because it is so rare. There was a communication problem with Moss as a result of Brady having to freelance, after the offensive line broke down. Oh yeah, the offensive line was horrendous. Time to get Vollmer back in there.
Silver Lining: Hard to find one. But the team will at least stop thinking they are one of the top 3 in the league, if they had already. 7-4 is clear proof that there is a lot of work to be done. The Patriots are a very good team, but they are in the pack with about 10 other teams that are playoff-bound but not good enough to win at the next level. Still this game has to be debilitating to their confidence. They still look rattled on the road, and leadership needs to step up.
