Not sure what Kendal bell has to do with anything, ever......

Read the posts. The poster referenced the tradedown to get Matt Light, and the Steelers drafted a player in that slot that was DROY. That player was Kendrall Bell.

What about the ensuing trade up to get light?

It was still a net trade down.

IIRC, 10 slots down and 2 slots up, and the extra pick(s) from the trade down didn't amount to anything.

Read Greg Bedard's post in this morning's Globe. It might change
your mind on trading down. Belichick picks up a lot of extra picks
but makes loads of mistakes in the 2nd and 3rd round.

He also sometimes overrules his own scouting staff. The scouts did not
recommend either Laurence Maroney or Chad Jackson. Josh McDaniel's
brother played a part in drafting these players.

Every team makes a lot of mistakes, that is the reason for stockpiling picks. This is a % game BB knows it and it is an economically sound strategy. Greg Bedard and others are clueless about this. This is the OP of a thread I started on the subject. It explains why year after year we have as deep a roster as any team in the NFL. Just be grateful that BB understands more than his competitors.

So some of us get frustrated when BB trades down and gets an extra pick here and there instead of getting out binkey. Then we look at the roster and see that not all of those stockpiled picks make the team, and that makes us crazy and think perhaps BB is crazy.

Caught this video on the NFL network on the value of draft picks is the 3rd DE statistically a lot better than the 4th or 5th... seems it may not matter. IOW there is a lot of luck involved.

Food for thought as we approach another draft and see BB trade down:

NFL Videos: Football Freakonomics: Draft Luck

and the paper they refer to in this piece:
The Loser's Curse: Overconfidence...onal Football League Draft | Berkeley.edu PDF

In this paper we offer some evidence on both of these important concepts in an unusual but
interesting context: the National Football League, specifically its annual draft of young players. Every year the National Football League (NFL) holds a draft in which teams take turns selecting players. A team that uses an early draft pick to select a player is implicitly forecasting that this player will do well. Of special interest to an economic analysis is that teams often trade picks. For example, a team might give up the 4th pick and get the 10th pick and the 21st pick in return. In aggregate, such trades reveal the market value of draft picks. We can compare these market values to the surplus value (to the team) of the players chosen with the draft picks. We define surplus value as the player’s performance value – estimated from the labor market for NFL veterans – less his compensation. In the example just mentioned, if the market for draft picks is rational then the surplus value of the player taken with the 4th pick should equal (on average) the combined surplus value of the players taken with picks 10 and 21.

Call me crazy but I'm guessing BB and E Adams are sorta familiar with this stuff, maybe even talked to the authors...

What does frustrate me about Bill is when he trades down 4 spots and picks up a 6th round pick -- the 6th round pick is unlikely to make the team, so I'd rather they stay put or even move up moving up involves trading a lower round pick this year.

I have no problem with those little tactical trades as from the Pats' perspective, it is something for almost nothing. If the Patriots truly wanted their guy at position X, they would grab him. If they strongly believe that their guy will be their at X+4 because they have mocked out both the nearby teams' needs and tendencies and teams that draft Patriots' target trade ammo, then why not grab another low probability of success pick in the process and a (slightly) cheaper contract for their preferred guy.

We all know that 5th, 6th, 7th rounders are low probability of success picks, we just don't know which (few) players will be legitimate hits, so getting more picks increases the chance of finding a diamond. And those picks can be gained at minimal cost and risk, why not.
