For some reason, I thought that the first cutdown was due this weekend. The first cutdown is August 27th and following game 3.

I have put together a preliminary list of roster camp invitees that are probably on the cutting block. Please feel free to chime in and list guys that you think could be a part of the first cut:

Here are my first 13 guys to be cut in order to get to 75 (I count 87 on the current roster):

    Bartholomew
    Davis
    Develin
    Haggerty
    Harrison
    Jones, Brandon
    Landl
    Patterson
    Schwab
    Vallone
    Winn
    Zupancic

plus one other player since the current roster sits at 87.

Hmmm one other player... Anyone not on that list that's looked particularly horrid and not capable of playing his position in the NFL. There's someone, I can't recall.

Much as he probably deserves it, I don't think he'll be on this cutdown deadline. No real reason, just a premonition.

This is from Reiss's column and one reason they should cut Tebow ASAP. To say he's earned a spot over all those players would be hard to say with a straight face.

What if he has a vast improvement, playing only as poorly as a lower tier 3rd stringer? Then we'll see the grding on a cure where below average becomes tremendous potential.

You either judge based on ability and performance, or you don't and put yourself in the same bag as lousy clubs who sign big names to fill seats.

The one problem with this argument—not that I particularly want to see Tebow on the field—is that you're not selecting "the 53 best players." You need the best possible team. After all, some people would argue that the 53 best players on the roster at this point in 2011 included maybe two or three defensive backs, period.

I'm not going to argue that I think Tebow belongs on the 53-man roster. I'm merely saying I could see Belichick believing he belongs.

We are NOT cutting to 53 after the 3rd Game. The 75 man roster includes the 53, some injured players, plus those scrubs who will be fodder in the last part (3/4) of the 4th pre-season game. Tebow is "worthy" of fodder. Besides, the alternative is to risk Mallett's help by having him play the entire 4th game, primarily with 3rd stringers.

Game 3 is do or die for Tebow. It could be do or die for him ever playing QB in the NFL again.

If Mallet plays that well in consecutive games hes won the # 2 QB job IMO. I will say this, I do believe that Tebow lit a fire under Mallets axx.

I like Tebow and wanted him to do well, but where is the value in keeping him?

There is value in a #3 QB who could be a #2 next year or in 2015. Most of us do not think that Tebow can be that player. Josh and Bill may agree, or not. The last time we were in this situation, we used a 3rd round draft choice for a backup that expected nothing out of for a year.

The bottom line is that Belichick has been willing to use serious resources in search of a future #2. He TWICE used a 3rd round draft choice. Belichick is certainly willing to use the 53rd roster spot if he (and Josh) think that Tebow might be the #2. Even if he stays, I would expect us to bring in competition for the #3 spot next season, with then winner to replace Mallett in 2015.

I am talking about the best possible team. We're going to cut a pass rusher, lineman etc. that might help us in case of injury to carry three QBs. If Mallet gets hurt, I guarantee we get someone immediately and play then ahead of Tebow if need be. Where not running the option that doesn't include a passing option offense.

We're wasting a roster spot. We're also undermining the philosophy of playing anyone regardless of reputation, if they've earned it.

You think Tebow is a serious #2 quarterback?

This is unbelievable. It's like the Emperor's New Clothes.

    Amen, brother.

Right now, Kafka has to be livid with righteous indignation.

It is indeed a Kafkaesque situation.:D

Incredibly, there were two press conference (one phone) transcripts and I searched for Tebow and no one asked him a question.

It's like some bizarre dictatorship where no one dares ask about one of the most obvious things.

What is strange is that people want to jettison players who were playing better at their position than Tebow was at his. Since when do we need a 3rd QB this badly especially when Mallet actually looked like an NFL QB Fri.

Um, we need 3 qb's through preseason. We won't cut any qb's until the final cut down.

They obviously thought Kafka sucked and wasn't ever going to be the 3rd qb. Why keep him around if he had no chance of being that player.

I have no idea if BB will keep 3 qb's or 2. I think he will only keep 3 if the 3rd one offers something special, either in terms of possible development or other uses.

So, the Pats are going to waste a vital roster spot on a terrible passing QB who might play next season or in 2015? Think about that for a moment.

If Tebow cannot succeed in NE where else can he succeed in the NFL? I do not see a better opportunity for him on the 31 other teams.

In NE, he has Brady as his mentor, Josh McDaniel's - again, one of the best supporting casts in the NFL and one of the best run franchises in pro sports. If Tebow cannot play better than that putrid debacle Friday than its best to cut him loose and add another DB with his roster spot. The Pats are hell on DBs and it would be a crime to have Tebow sitting on his butt when the Pats could have a little insurance for the pass defense.

I don't think Tebow should - or will - make the final roster. But there's very little chance they cut him before the fourth preseason game is over. Because Brady isn't playing in that four preseason game and they can't go into it with just Mallett. Tebow survives all the way to the end and gets cut on the last cut day.

I sorta like watching Tebow try to throw in preseason games...I like watching the reactions and body language of the intended receivers....he's like that kid in Little League whose daddy was the manager so he got to play shortstop...and every throw to first sailed over the dugout or bounced ten feet in front of the bag in the dirt...and the after practice, he gets in the car with Daddy and the rest of the kids go throw rocks at the neighboring school windows out of frustration...guess I'm a sadist...

You guys will turn every thread into one about Tebow.

I think that's a solid list in the OP. Kinda bummed we haven't seen much out of Winn.
