This idea that we were going to go 14-2 and then sweep through the playoffs ala 2004 was unrealistic. We were fortunate to be 6-1. We've got a young hardworking group that fights and that's why we were able to turn a couple defeats into victories.
Today, we ran into a well rested team coming off their bye week who seems to be playing their best ball in years. For years, the problem in Cleveland was quarterback and they finally seem to have found a budding star. They played well. We didn't. Props to them.
But this hardly means the sky is falling. At the beginning of the year, when we still had guys like Moss, Faulk, Bodden, and Warren, most felt we were a 9 or 10 win team. This is a team in transition. We lead the league in dropped catches. It happens, especially to teams with all the youth that we have. I remember David Givens in 2002. The guy dropped everything. When 2003 began, I couldn't believe he made the team. To my surprise he began catching everything thrown his way. We need to have the same patience with our youngsters today. These kids can play and they'll only get better but they need our support as they face the process of growing up in the NFL.
When its all said and done, we've got a team that will continue to fight and win some games they shouldn't and perhaps, like today, lose a few they shouldn't as well. Maybe the Steelers will crush us. Maybe we'll surprise everyone and pull it out. I don't know. But I do know that this team is heading in the right direction and would like to see a little bit of faith from our fanbase. Things didn't work out today. Maybe they won't work out next week as well. Maybe the Jets will take the division. Get over it. We're still heading towards the playoffs and if we somehow manage to start playing our best ball at the right time, who knows......maybe this team will surprise us all. Either way, all a fanbase has the right to "expect" is a competitive team that consistently finds itself in the running. We have that. As a fanbase, we're one of the lucky ones. Be thankful for that. It wasn't that long ago when we were the Buffalo Bills.
