Rex Ryan says Jets would not target Peyton Manning, if available

good for us........

Except that Rex doesn't make those decisions, Tannenbaum does. However, Tanny's moves this year made the YETS weaker, so maybe it doesn't matter anyway, because apparently he's not that smart. Now there's our real advantage. We should all wish real hard for Tannenbaum to remain the YETS G.M., because he s*cks.

Rex Ryan sometimes says things that lack truth... Rex Ryan has no control over this, if Woody wants to make a personnel change he will. If the Jets miss the playoffs a personnel change will follow. Woody hasn't managed to hang onto his job for so many years of mediocrity by standing behind people, he's ridden the wave of public opinion at every turn to save his own neck and keep asses in the seats. If PM is available they'll make a strong push and if not or if they fail I'm guessing Shotty will get the axe, just the way of things in NJ.

Isn't Woody the owner? Does he have a job or does he just hire people because he's a multi-millionaire? Its the latter not the former.

You don't have to worry about Peyton playing for the Jets, but you do have to worry about Peyton going to Miami. A very real possibility

When will people learn dont believe a single thing that Rex says. Of course he's not going to say he's going to do that.

Not sure if Peyton or Eli would want to share the spotlight of New York simultaneously.

Could be wrong.

I believe the Jets have a +5-7 Million in cap space. Assuming that the cap ceiling is increased by 10million, it could work if Peyton decided to take a pay cut. Jets could save another 6-7Million by decreasing or even cutting Sanchez (due to pay 8 Million next year. Might have to cut Crow and LT.

It would knock $9M in salary off the cap but $5M in dead cap amortization would remain at the position meaning the position would still be taking up more than $23M for just Manning and McElroy and dead cap. The cap is believed to be fairly flat for the next two years, it may go up incrementally but so will salaries. That $118M cap figure is for 51 signed players, including lots of minimum salary third stringers. They have 11 UFA (including 2 safeties a tall WR and their PK) and 4 RFA heading into 2012. Those guys have to be retained or replaced and in many cases their position and others upgraded. There isn't a lot of dead wood that can be cut at cap savings (see the parens) not to mention if it were it too would have to be replaced. And the flexibility is down to $1.5M in borrowed advances divided between 3 veteran players for 2012-2013.

The Jets have +/- $80 million tied up in nine players for 2012. Very top-heavy. Unloading Sanchez saves them $10 million but signing Manning adds $28 million under the current deal. They'd have greater imbalance - $98 million in nine players with $20 million to pay the remaining 42 players - just enough to pay the minimum plus a couple of rookie contracts.

The Patriots, by comparison, have $56 million tied up in its top nine contracts for next year - roughly $24 million less than the Jets. That leaves $62 million to spread around 42 guys. Brady's deal is way more cap-friendly. New England Patriots Salary Cap 2012

This Manning contract is a real albatross for the Colts.
