It's easy, and only takes a few moments. The team spent a 3rd and got a viable backup for three seasons plus a pre-season, plus a conditional 7th. Considering how many 3rd rounders aren't even in the league after 2 seasons and the small chance the conditional becomes a keeper, it's definitely not a net loss.
The good news is we aren't the Texans who have just watched Ryan FItzpatrick suck all pre-season and are now giving the Pats a pick for someone who was about to be waived and should have cost them nothing and who also sucked in our pre-season and are now hoping he won't suck as bad as Fitzpatrick during the regular season. That's a lot of suckage to deal with!
That compensation does make it clear that they would have cut him otherwise.
Meanwhile, over on Texans messageboards right now the emerging theme is "I have no clue if Mallett's any good, but he can't possibly be any worse than what we had."
That seems bizarre to me. The Pats could have let Mallett walk in FA and likely gotten a 2016 7th round comp pick. Weird.
Just a thought about something...
Why not having to trade a player for draft pick but let the value of the pick be based on performance.
Something like that happened before? i think not but i think its kind of a good idea...
That isn't even the most delusional. There were people in here who said suggested transitioning him.No kidding.
From the PatsFans Draft Talk Board, Mallett was worth at least a 2014 2nd Round Pick.
I didnt explain myself well.
I meant that a draft pick will be based on the performance of the player in his new team. kind of like if mallet becomes a regular starter with a playoff run so pats get a 2 rounder and if he makes it as a backup and thats it so pats get a 6th...
The people who complain about this stuff make the board unreadable.
Now Mallet is a "starting QB???" When the fak has ever ever started a game, shown he was capable of being a starter, and/or shown that he was even capable of playing in the league well.
