    1) I swear, this current Red Sox ownership does this on purpose

    2) People beleive it's a red sox town first because the media shoves that perception down your throat. Bet your bottom dollar, they weren't takin' any football calls this morning

    3) Larry Luchhino is a hugh scumbag

    4) John Henry is a creepy rich dude

    5) I hope the Yankees embarass the Sox, again, this year. Eff them. Hate 'em.

    6) I have seen this phenomenon with my own eyes on a few occasions: Room with Red Sox and Pats players. Big Papi getting lots of attention. The minute Tom Brady walks in the room- Papi and the rest of his teammates are left in the dust. Tom Brady trascends sports in this town. He's Gawd. Ever go to a Celtics game? Big Papi, Youk, etc shown on Jumbo - a nice reception by the crowd. A Patriots player like Welker or Branch? Thunderous applaus. If they show Belichick of Brady on the jumbotron, the place gets so loud you can feel it shake.

The Red Sox, in my little insignificant world, will never ever ever upstage the Patriots.....eveRRRRR...you could outsource them to India and I would never know the difference.

It is weird that the Red Sox always seem to sign players during the baseball off-season.

Relax. It's the baseball meetings and signings happen every year at this time.

The William C. Rhoden Patriots slander and cover up at the New York Times is a far more insidious "manage reality" story.

The Sox had to sign these guys now because both were being pursued by other teams. Every year, the big free agaents are gone by Christmas.

I love both teams. I'm very happy about the RS signings, but I'm frackin over the moon about the Patriots win over the Jets. This town is big enough for both of them, in fact for all four of them. That's what makes this place great. I didn't stop enjoying the Pats' win when the RS news popped up. It doubled my pleasure.

What are they suppose to do? Not try to improve the team during weeks the Pats have a big game?

I doubt the Sox are timing their signing based on what is happening in Foxoboro, but are simply trying to improve the team. Likewise, I doubt BB times Patriots signings and trade based on what is happening in Fenway.

Football > Baseball and that makes a difference. The Pats are playing the Bears this weekend, a top NFC team, and I guarantee New England will be glued to the TV. If the Red Sox are playing the Phillies or Giants in interleague action, no one but the Sox diehards are going to care (unless a boatload of Sox players are medevaced out like last year ).

How can you be a Pats fan and be upset about the Sox signings? That seems really crazy to me.

In my family, the Red Sox are traditionally the number 1 obsession followed by the Bruins then the Pats. This has changed recently (obviously) .

I think the article seems to misread the fan base. I spent an entire lunch on Tuesday talking about the Pats game with a die hard Red Sox fan. We spent about two sentences talking about the Red Sox trade. People are of course following what the red sox are doing, but they are living and breathing with the Pats.

I am also convinced that the one and only reason that 98.5 caught up to WEEI is that they talked more football. At least that was my perception and why I tuned in. I like to hear what the sox are doing in the headlines and might listen to some call in guest talk about the meetings, but if it goes beyond that I usually try to change to some football talk.

    No Jersey Selected

The premise for this thread is absurd! I come hear to learn and talk about the Patriots. I'm a diehard Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins and Patriots fan since the late 70s and am extremely giddy about both the Pats and their big win and the recent acquisition of the Red Sox. Here's a silly, but appropriate comparison, it's like having 4 children, you love them all the same, but at times one needs or gets more attention than the other. So be it.

NFL football owns the professional sports market. Player transaction reports come and go, even with significant signings, so its a stretch to call this upstaging the Pats.

The question is what do fans care more about, winning big games or player transactions? I expect this news only upstages the Pats' win if you consider yourself more of a Red Sox fan than a Pats fan. I am a Pats fan who follows the Sox during the baseball season.

I hate baseball. Boring sport combined with teams like NY and Boston that just try to buy championships but generally fail miserably. As hard as baseball wants to try it's in the backseat to football now. It hasn't upstaged anything.

whats wrong with some of you? how much talk about the pats destroying the jets can we possibly want? let the red sox get some recognition, im a fan of both, but the level discrepancy is incredible favoring the Pats, and im completely OK with this

    get used to it

Athough I think the Red Sox have tried to upstage the Pats in the past, I do think the recent trade and signing is pure coincidence.

In the past, the Red Sox hate sharing the media spot light with the Pats and act like that child who demands attention from Mom and Dad all the time and when another of his/her siblings gets attentention, he/she forces hin/herself infront of the sibling to get the spotlight again. This doesn't seem to be the case.

I think the current moves themselves is an attempt to regain the spotlight, but not steal the thunder. The Sox brass see that the public interest is definitely shifting from the Pats and onto the Pats, Celts, and Bruins. The ratings are down. Attendance is down (they sell out, but there are a lot of empty seats in the stands losing concession sales). Patriots talk dominate the airwaves even in the summer. The Sox are definitely trying to make themselves relevant and a hot topic, but they are more concerned about their long term interest rather than steal the Pats' spotlight after the Jets' win.
