Go get Marcus Cooper Bill!

To add to @TommyD4207 point.

Beefing up the front 7 and signing DMC was the best way to address the expected mediocrity in the secondary. Basically the opposing offense will make some plays but can they consistently do it against a really good pass rush. This defense compliments the offense. If they can create 1 or 2 turnovers and/or a couple of 3 and outs the offense will out score the opponent.

Of course the CB's will get burned now and then but if they do their job they'll be ready to capitalize on the opposing teams miscues created by the front 7.

Yes adding depth is necessary but this is not going to hurt as bad as some people think.

Defense stats:

Created 7 turnovers (6 interceptions)
Opponents 3rd down efficiency: 39%
Sacks: 16 (avg 4 per game)

On top of that is Special teams play. NE is ranked #1 in average starting field position.

Relax people.

Think we can increasingly expect to see more of DMc at CB, especially in nickel/dime. Not an awesome development, but at least Harmon has been playing well at S.

McCourty has already been playing CB in nickle and dime, and he's been excellent.

@dougkyed: The Patriots could technically waive CB Darryl Roberts off IR with an injury settlement then re-sign him, but he'd be exposed to every team.

Loophole gamble is possible

Won't ever happen. Not only would it expose Roberts to waivers, but NE couldn't sign him until 6 weeks + the number of weeks settled for.

Despite the complaining about Roberts being put on IR, rookies who miss half the year are at a significant disadvantage. Coleman is playing as well as you could expect from Roberts and he may not have even been here if NE was using a roster spot on an injured Roberts.

If Melvin doesn't work out, go get Fletcher, or Dennard if he's in football shape.

They know the system, especially Fletcher. Stop-gap until they find a fit.

It's number of weeks settled for OR six weeks.

Nevermind, no it isn't.

Butler played all the reps last week. It is Ryan's time that will be affected. Coleman will likely be the nickel back, as he was last week. coming in for a linebacker. BTW, last week Brown replaced Ryan in nickel packages.

Brown didn't play last week, did he? I thought he was injured, but still active, without ever seeing the field.

EDIT: Nevermind. It appears as though he did play.

He did play last week.

You have to look at it on a probabilistic basis. Maybe a low-round draft CB has a 1:20 chance (or whatever the right number is) of being a good corner. Over several years you get a couple of hundred of these guys drafted league-wide, and you end up with say a dozen top CBs from that wide net that was cast.

You draft a top-10 CB, and you have a much higher chance he ends up as a top CB - maybe a one in two shot.

So if you are always drafting low, the chances of ending up with a top CB are pretty poor. It does happen of course - look at Butler.

Exactly. Great post.

At this point we should just focus on having S/CB hybrids all across the backfield, that way the oppsoing QB has no idea what their assignments are at all

As far as personnel goes, I think we've taken a step towards that with guys like McCourty, Richards, Wilson, and Harmon having both CB/S skill sets.

I'm not sure that we could do it on the macro level that you may be suggesting, but we have seen some confusion with assignments from guys like Law, Harrison, McCourty, etc. Good stuff.

Why take the chance on waiving him? Claim Charles James off waivers from the Ravens, he was just put there.

Unortunately, he's been claimed, by Houston I believe.

That's a shame. He was very solid for the early part of the season but a foot injury is nothing you want to mess with. There needs to be another move at that position, IMO. The depth there is paper thin and we're one injury away from having the undisputed worst crop of starting CB's in the league.

Still waiting for the slimeness of TJ Ward, Talib & Von Miller to get their well-deserved season-ending injuries too.
