I like this thread because it gets beyond Maroney bashing to actually talk about decisions to be made. Thanks, NEfan32 -- and here's one back at you:
Assuming again that McFadden is the real deal, would you rather have McFadden or Asante Samuel?
I think it's a realistic question, their contracts should be fairly close. You'd be looking at 2008 with the following players under contract...
Scenario 1
RB: Maroney, Morris, Faulk, Evans
CB: Samuel, Hobbs, Richardson, E. Jackson
vs.
Scenario 2
RB: McFadden, Maroney, Morris, Faulk, Evans
CB: Hobbs, Richardson, E. Jackson
Note that in Scenario 1 you'd also have extra draft picks, something like a mid-round #1 and #2.
This is making the assumption that Asante will come off his 10M per year demand. Until Asante actually comes out and says he will take less than Clements money, this is a false assumption. Asante is going to cost a lot more than the currently slotted #4 draft pick.
Let's not try to confuse the draft with free agent decisions.
I'd like to keep Samuel but the problem is he will be a free agent and there will be plenty of teams willing to outbid the Pats for his services.
The better comparison is Scenario 1 Sign Samuel OR Scenario 2 Sign Karlos Dansby
And Moss will be resigned regardless, though Stallworth might need to be cut loose to make room for his $$.
