The problem with building too much of a reputation/fanbase is that you feel pressured to be the one to predict late risers/fallers/reaches. That need to shock and be different supersedes all rational common sense.

This happens to Kiper every year. I recall one mock had the Steelers taking Maurice Stovall in round 1 (over Holmes/Jennings). I know you got yourself a reputation for nailing a few unexpected picks, Mel, but let's be real here.

In the case of PFT, Florio recently write that he knows a source that believes Crabtree may fall out of the top 10 if he runs the 40 in under 4.50. Possible? Sure. But it hasn't happened yet, and to predict that Macklin and Hakeem Nicks (!?) will get taken ahead of Crabtree to me is stretching for the sake of making a stretch.

Re: proof that PFT is a bunch of fools.....

Given that PFT has built itself up in large part by stirring up controversy, playing both sides of the fence on issues, etc., then perhaps that may explain some of the selections here. Make a few odd selections and outraged fans respond - while Florio laughs all the way to the bank.

But I do have to say, there are definitely a few head-scratchers. Knowshon Moreno #6? Hakeem Nicks #9? Tampa Bay taking Alex Mack at #19?

Re: proof that PFT is a bunch of fools.....

#6 is pretty high for Moreno, but I could see it happen with a great combine and some other guys slipping. More likely he goes in the teens to twenties. Nicks over Maclin and Crabtree will never happen. Mack at #19 is a reach, but not totally unrealistic. A lot of teams are high on him from the sound of it. Most of all, if Everette Brown is on the board at #23 and the Pats pass him up, I'll be physically sick.

Join the Barwin binky club. It'll stop the nausea. :D

Seriously, though, remember BB's buying the groceries. And you can count on him to get what he thinks will improve the team most, not please the chatterboxes. :)

Re: proof that PFT is a bunch of fools.....

I like Barwin, just not as a first round pick. Brown has that unique combination of speed rushing ability combined with inside and outside moves and strength to hold up at the point of attack. His inside spin is Freeney-like, he's got a club move that's reminiscent of Reggie White and his rip is solid too. While I agree Belichick will do what he thinks is best for the team, I have a hard time believing he'd think Peria Jerry is better for the team than Brown. I could see skipping Brown for an offensive lineman, one of the inside linebackers or a corner, but Jerry? He just doesn't look like a 2 gap guy. Anything could happen I guess.

Jerry is actually strong enough for DE in the NE 3-4, he's certainly a much better choice than all the drafts predicting Cushing at #23.

Yeah, I didn't even notice Everette Brown slipping that far. Regarding Mack, I thought less of it being a reach and more that Tampa Bay would be looking at other positions (QB, DL, LB, CB).

Re: proof that PFT is a bunch of fools.....

Well, you know a lot more goes into playing as a 2 gap lineman in a 3-4 scheme than just strength. Hand positioning, leverage and balance matter a lot, since you're going to be engaged with two men at least some of time and you have the responsibility of controlling both adjacent gaps. Jerry doesn't strike me as a guy that likes to body up with linemen, and try to win that battle of the hands that matters so much. He seems much more comfortable as a penetrator. I haven't seen as much of him as I'd like, since there isn't much footage of him out there that's worth a damn, but I would agree that he'd be a lot better than Cushing, who I did see plenty of, and who seems maxed out already.

    Cushing falling:

By most accounts Cushing was among the more impressive linebackers throughout the week of practice at the Senior Bowl. Rather than focusing on his athleticism and instincts on the field, however, scouts in the stands were buzzing about reports that Cushing spends thousands of dollars a month on nutritional supplements. While no one is claiming Cushing's supplements should be confused with illegal steroids, it does raise questions about how maxed out Cushing might be -- questions that could push the All-American down the board considering the top-end talent this year at linebacker.

Re: proof that PFT is a bunch of fools.....

Rather, he doesn't fit the profile. The question then shifts to his ability to play the scheme despite profile nonconformity? Myself, I would go in a different direction because what little I've seen isn't conclusive enough to commit to him in a 3-4, but that's not to say he couldn't 'git'er done.' I'll also grant the point that Florio and Company mocking for NE is a stike against him, but I'm not going to get down on the kid for their sorry stench.

Yeah PFT's specialty is reporting "news" not doing mock drafts, power rankings, and fantasy rankings. I saw this one earlier just kinda laughed and moved on.

:agree: Epic failure (Perria doesn't fit scheme, not best player avaiable)

Re: proof that PFT is a bunch of fools.....

Sedrick Ellis was strong enough to play 3-4 DE last year. Some draftniks suggested that the Pats would take him at #7 as "BPA"; they obviously didn't agree. Perry is a bit like Ellis, less strong but perhaps a bit quicker. He might be able to make the conversion - it's not a ridiculous thought. The question is, why spend a 1st round pick on a DE prospect who doesn't fit the profile? Obviously, if the Pats fall in love with him and believe he could be a standout 3-4 DE then he would have value at that selection, but it seems unlikely.

PFT's mock appears to be deliberately provocative, much like (as someone already mentioned) some of Kiper's early mocks. Moreno at #6, Nicks the first WR off the board at #9, Crabtree falling to #12, Matthews going #15, Jason Smith falling to #21, Everett Brown and Orapko falling to #24 and #29 (with Michael Johnson going ahead of Orapko), are either deranged and demented (quite possible given it's coming from Florio) at this time, or just an effort to do something different and provoke controversy (quite possible given it's coming from Florio).

Re: proof that PFT is a bunch of fools.....

Looks like they were spot on about Crabtree. Crabtree won't even run the 40 and has come down with an injury so he can't participate in any other workout either.

As for Orakpo dropping all the way down to the late 20's, I'm really surprised. Peria Jerry is also a pretty good player. I think they anticipate Wilfork leaving, is why they plugged him in for us, however he might be more suitable as a 4-3 DT who shoots the gap.

Is Orakpo a one year wonder? He didn't impress me all that much last season, especially in the bowl game.

Their top wide receiver, Hakeem Nicks, averaged a 4.5 in the 40. I can't see him going ahead of Crabtree or Maclin.
