Play Action ...

If you want to see a play action pass described by Belichick himself.

Finesse or "fool 'em " plays work sometimes and look terrible when no one is fooled. How can you count on them to work. You can't unless you use them sparingly and set them up for the right situation.

Thansk for the find by another post and poster.

I saw that clip and only time Belichick mentions play action is at the 3:20 mark. He says Ty Warren plays 'run' and bites on the play action, and if you watch the clip Jon Kitna has all kinds of time to make the throw and he is looking deep. He ends up getting sacked because he held the ball way too long and double clutched but never threw the ball.

I fail to see how this clip proves anything you have been saying.

I think play action actually slows the defense down. If you are a defensive end, you can't sprint full speed forward on a pass rush if you think the play is a pass. Also, the linebackers will jump forwards to try to meet the ball carrier.

If done correctly, this should create a wide open area behind the linebackers, and also give the QB time if the defensive ends bit on the fake.
Exactly; it will also have the same effect on the strong safety, or perhaps both safeties, depending on their assignments, meaning the wide receivers will be alone in man coverage. That's why the play action can lead to big plays - the receivers may or may not have more time to get open (it's debateable, as this thread shows) but it will be easier for the quarterback to get the ball to them and once they get it they are more likely to have big YAC (yards after the catch) because there are no deep safeties.

This is a good play call when the defense is overcommiting to stopping the run. It would have worked wonders for KC in loosening up Indy's 8- or 9-in-the-box defense which was stacked to stop LJ come hell or high water, and it will be something OUR defense will need to be careful of when we play SD.
