Pats sign Smith
Posted By: mreiss | Time: 02:39:06 PM

The Patriots have announced the signing of wide receiver Zuriel Smith (5-11, 175) today. Smith, who played in college at Hampton, was with the Giants briefly in 2005 and previously played in nine games with the Cowboys.

A bit more on Smith to come later today.

PLAYER NOTES LOG:

Sep 5 2005 - WR Zuriel Smith was cut by the Giants.

Aug 18 2005 - WR Zuriel Smith was cut by the Cowboys and awarded to the Giants on waivers.

Jul 19 2005 - WR Zuriel Smith will get a shot at returning kickoffs and punts.

Jan 19 2005 - WR Zuriel Smith was signed to a to a one-year contract. He was tge Cowboys' sixth-round draft pick (186th overall) in 2003. Smith played in nine games for Dallas in 2003 and went to training camp with the club in Oxnard, Calif., last summer. But he never made enough big plays to get himself out of the numbers crunch at receiver and was released on Sept. 5, a week before the start of the regular season. The 5-11, 166-pound receiver did not sign with another team and was out of football last season.

Jan 14 2005 - WR Zuriel Smith, who was released by Dallas in September, was added to the Cowboys' roster.

Aug 23 2004 - WR Zuriel Smith gave the Cowboys something to think about with a 55-yard kickoff return. Smith's play led a 27-yard field goal by Matt Bryant in the first quarter against Oakland. And considering Bill Parcells said that a finding a kickoff returner is more important than a punt returner because of the increased number of chances to impact the game, don't write off Smith until someone else emerges. He was deemed a long shot to make the roster for a second straight year because of the emergence of Patrick Crayton on punt returns.

Jan 26 2004 - WR Zuriel Smith had too many drops on returns and didn't contribute as receiver.

Dec 23 2003 - KR Zuriel Smith averaged 10.2 yards per punt return, including a season-best effort of 46 yards.

Dec 17 2003 - WR Zuriel Smith muffed a punt and now his job is on the line again. "I've got to do something," coach Bill Parcells said. "It's not going very good at this stage." Parcells might use receiver Joey Galloway on punt returns and Smith only on kickoff returns. He also might bench Smith and use Galloway on punts and safeties Tony Dixon or Lynn Scott on kickoff returns.

Dec 3 2003 - WR Zuriel Smith has regained his role as the primary kick returner with Derek Ross' departure. Pete Hunter will replace Ross as the nickel back.

Nov 17 2003 - WR Zuriel Smith handled punt and kickoff returns and was the team's third receiver Sunday. He had his first career catch in the third quarter, gaining 6 yards on a pass from Quincy Carter, and finished with two catches for 38 yards.

Nov 16 2003 - WR Zuriel Smith was active against the Patriots in place of the injured Joey Galloway (quad). He recorded the first two catches of his career for 38 yards.

Oct 26 2003 - WR Zuriel Smith was made inactive Sunday as Cowboys coach Bill Parcells sent a message to his team. Parcells complained all week about Smith's poor ball handling and proved his seriousness by not allowing the rookie, whom he personally picked on draft day, to make the trip. Receiver Joey Galloway took Smith's place on punt returns, while cornerback Derek Ross handled his kick off return duties. Galloway averaged 9.5 yards on two returns. Ross, who hadn't returned kickoffs since college, averaged 25.8 yards on four returns, including a long of 33.

Oct 13 2003 - Rookie KR Zuriel Smith caught coach Bill Parcells' eye when he was in college at Hampton. Parcells, who coaches kick returners, personally scouted Smith and ultimately made the call to draft him in the second round. Smith was an electrifying kick returner in college, setting an NCAA record with three returns for touchdowns in one game.

I doubt he makes the roster but with our lack of WR who knows. Maybe it will make Bethel Johnson work harder and finally earn his keep.
