Re: Dan Koppen injury thread

Gotta get Koppen the same doctor that worked on Albert Pujols' broken wrist. and by doctor I probably mean steroid.

Today is Koppen's birthday....

Well Dan, I hope your 33rd birthday is better than your 32.

Re: Today is Koppen's birthday....

HAPPY birthday hope you will resign next year.. since your done for the year

Re: Dan Koppen injury thread

Damn that sucks. But let's try to think positive here his time was going to be up soon, we've got to start searching for other answers at C for the future anyways. Maybe we'll find it this year?

Props to Connolly on filling in admirably tonight.

Re: Dan Koppen injury thread

My Dad Tough he BROKE his leg. Can we afford to carry him for 6-8 weeks till he heals??? I say NO. IR him and move Connolly to C and pick up a new OL guy

Re: Dan Koppen injury thread

Diagnosis has been confirmed. Koppen has a broken ankle, which doesn't rule him out for the season.

Way better than a torn ligament.

But how long can you hold a spot for him? What about an injury settlement instead of IR. His salary is guaranteed for the rest of the year anyway and he's in the last year of his contract so no bonus money to accelerate. If he gets healthy, re-sign him, if not you aren't wasting a spot.

Indeed. The roster squeeze just got tighter, but of course we keep him hanging around for quite a while.

Then, if he tests the ankle and can't go, he might become one of those frustrating late-season IR guys. But if the break really looks like the kind of thing that he could come back from in December, I expect and encourage the Pats to keep him around.

there is NO way we waste a roster spot on a guy that we won't have for 6-8 weeks. My dad thought it was broken leg... he pretty much nailed it.

Re: Dan Koppen injury thread

Depending how bad the break is and whether there is ligament damage, he could be back. It was positive that he was on the field afterwards. That means that there wasn't a dislocation or a protruding bone that needed to be reset.

Speedy recovery Dan.

Re: Dan Koppen injury thread

Damn. Hope he gets better soon whether he's IRed or not. It'd be great to see him back in December, but in the meantime the Pats nee to acquire at least one decent or better OL. any chance Cannon comes in by late October and can play center? Here's to hopin'!

Re: Dan Koppen injury thread

we need more o line help rather than saftey help right now

Why not? We did it with Fred Taylor last season and he wasn't nearly as important to this team as Koppen is.

IIRC you can't re-sign a player after agreeing to an injury settlement. He can only sign elsewhere--precisely to avoid moves like this.

Yeah, Koppen seems like a guy you might hold the spot for, but it hurts.

Why oh why can't they institute a common sense short-term IR? Let it be for 6 weeks, and make not available until week 3 and require the player to be on the 53 for 2 weeks afterwards to avoid "stashing" of players. That shouldn't be subject to much abuse, and would allow teams to sign short-term injury replacements. It would also improve the quality of playoff football by making more good players available.

NFL On The Fringe Boomer Grigsby «

The first On the Fringe Player to be off the fringe, fullback Boomer Grisgby, checked in Friday from Las Vegas, where he is rehabilitating a high-ankle sprain that caused him to be waived-injured by Houston just more than a week ago. Grigsby reached an injury settlement this week with the Texans, which he described as “good.” He also received some encouraging news that Houston will consider re-signing him when he’s healthy.

“No guarantees,” Grigsby said about the Texans’ bringing him back.

According to rules of the settlement, Houston can re-sign him after six weeks of reaching the settlement, but Grigsby can sign with another team before then. The key for Grigsby is to get healthy. He was told the average recovery time from his type of injury was about 55 days. Grigsby plans to rehab in Vegas before heading to Arizona, where he lives in Scottsdale with Vikings defensive end Jared Allen, to continue his rehab.

Grigsby plans to keep us abreast of his progress in our ongoing series and with Grigsby, you can bet his reports will be entertaining.

Rams Cut and Slash to Get Down to Limit of 60 : Pro football: They release their two punters and acquire another one from San Diego. - Los Angeles Times

The Rams also released defensive linemen Bill Goldberg and Sean Smith, despite the team's glaring weakness along the defensive front. There were few available options, though.

Smith has an ankle sprain that will probably keep him out six weeks, Goldberg a pulled hamstring that could take two weeks to heal.

Under league rules, the Rams would have lost both players for the season had they been placed on injured reserve before the final cut. However, NFL teams can't release players who are injured, so the Rams cut financial deals with both. They gave Smith six weeks' salary in a lump sum for the estimated time he would miss with the injury.

Just a few things I found on Google. They can't cut him because he's injured but can bring him back after an injury settlement? Seems to be the case but I couldn't find anything more definitive than a few examples.

Re: Dan Koppen injury thread

It does not look good but I'll wait and see until after actual medical professionals evaluate him, not armchair doctors/hysteria addicts.

If it's a clean break w/o ligament damage there's a chance he could be back this year if they want to hold his spot. If not, I'm pretty sure the rest of the games will be played.

Something that seems more definitive:

Lions Training Camp Notes: List Of Injured Players Is Shrinking - Pride Of Detroit

"Within a five-day period, the team and player can reach a settlement on the injury. If that happens, there is a length applied to the settlement (how many weeks until the player will likely be healthy). At that time, the player can then sign with any other team. The Lions, though, couldn't re-sign him until six weeks after that time.

If the player doesn't reach a settlement with the team, he is paid until it's determined that he's "healthy.''

At that point, he is officially waived by the Lions, who cannot re-sign that player at any point all season.

File this under complicated rules most people have never heard of."
