Behind the head triceps extension. I had warmed up and was using a 70lb dumb bell (this wasn't a lot of wgt. for me).I was sitting on a curl bench facing the other way, using the bench to support by back. There was no warning the resistance felt good, around the third or fourth rep it felt like someone slapped me on the back of my triceps, i felt the right one snap then the left. I was able to bring the wgt. over my head and drop it. I knew what happened and went to the ER right away. Had surgery on the RT. arm about five weeks ago, the LT. will be Aug. 18. I asked the specialist/surgeon what might have happened he said wear and tear. I remember Konta posting this really long work out that he does, this is what could happen to you Kontra if you don't scale back. A bilateral triceps rupture is very rare, i was told there are only Half a dozen other cases that have been reported. In two of the cases (i'm the third) the same exercise was involved.

This is going OT but I just want to chime in.

That scares me. I'm pretty young, just 20 and I'm doing the triceps extension the same exact way you do, I just feel as if I get the full set of motion that normal skull crushers can't do for me. Currenly I'm doing 70, 80 90. 3 Sets, and I do 10, 8 6 for my reps. I'm not putting too much wear and tear am I? JW cuz if so I'd say I'll cut that exercise out before I **** my arms up.

I know Raiders have Campbell, but don't get carried away ;)

Screw it, I think the Raiders have a good shot at competing for the division title. Between all of the holdouts in SD, and Clady, Moreno, and now Dumervil getting torpedoed in Denver, and the Raiders finally having a real, league-average quarterback, they might surprise a lot of people this year. Sucks for our draft pick.

Thanks for the warning. I have already cut back, substantially. I appreciate the advice though.

He's one player I enjoy watching ... hopefully he recovers quickly.

For years i did three sets to work all three tricep heads, lateral medial and long head. What happened to me is more about just wearing the tendons and joints out. I would spend 2-3 hours a day in a gym 6 days a week, for a good deal of my 30+ plus years of lifting, thats to much. People (like me) forget that their muscles need to rest, building muscle is about 15% lifting and about 85% eating good and getting rest. It doesn't sound like your doing to much to me. Anyways Triceps ruptures are very rare, while i was in the E.R. they called the chief of orthopedic surgery. He came in to examine me even though he was on vacation because in 50 years of practice he had only seen one triceps rupture, and that person had ruptured the triceps on one arm. I wouldn't stop doing this exercise if i were you, i would just avoid using to much wgt. The other two people that ruptured both triceps were doing the same exercise, so there might be something inherently bad about it. I found that behind the back push downs work just as well.

Thanks. Yeah, when I first started training I was one of those who worked like a Wlverine in the gym only to spend the rest of my day on a well balanced diet of fast food and more fast food. Now I've learn to make my workouts shorter but a lot more effective, I try not to stay past an hr and a half of actual lifting. I see why you had that happen to you, that's a **** load of time to spend for years in a gym

I stopped working out like that 7-8 years ago, now i go 3x a week for thirty minutes. I do a circut, of 5 or 6 different exercises for example BP, Curls, shrugs, lateral raises, stomach, then back to BP etc. I go directly from exercise to exercise, its almost like doing some cardio at the same time. Three to four sets depending on the muscle group, i have a different set of exercises for back and legs. I just try to maintain what i have. BTW i went to PT today and was told that the behind the back triceps is a no no and doesn't isolate the muscle group all that well.
