For Patsnutsme and all you others who loved Clay Matthews and wanted him at 23 for the Pats, here's an interesting piece from Pro Football Weekly:

"Not long after the Packers’ rookie orientation ended last weekend, head coach Mike McCarthy made it clear that none of the newcomers in attendance had been guaranteed anything close to a starting role. But the way we hear it, OLB Clay Matthews, a player for whom GM Ted Thompson very uncharacteristically traded up to obtain late in Round One, looks like the clear-cut front-runner for the starting ROLB job. Clearly, Thompson must think the USC product has what it takes to make an instant impact as a starter, considering that, according to team insiders, the Packers’ GM apparently was ready to select Matthews with the ninth pick overall, had NT B.J. Raji been off the board.

Although the viewing of rookie drills was limited to the local media, sources on the scene said Matthews, who reported to the orientation weighing 250 pounds, 10 more than his weight at this year’s Combine, showed impressive explosiveness on a few drops. Word is Matthews’ major competition for the starting ROLB job is expected to come from the physical Brady Poppinga, with second-year pro Jeremy Thompson also in the mix. We hear there’s one other rookie who could have a good shot at starting right away: fifth-round FB Quinn Johnson, who, according to one unofficial report, registered an eye-popping 70 pancake blocks in his final season at LSU. As for Raji, while he’s certain to see considerable action right away in passing situations, plans call for him to start the season listed second on the depth chart at nose tackle behind veteran Ryan Pickett."

And Eric Wood may possibly start for Buffalo, and Louis Delmas may possibly start for Detroit, and Michael Oher may possibly start for Baltimore.....

    I guess I don't get it.

I've said it several times during draft week, Matthews might turn out to be the best of the USC linebackers. I'm not sure with his size/build that he was the best fit for the Pats but it looks like he gained 10 lbs pretty easily while maintaining his explosiveness. I wish him the best in Green Bay.

So if he fails a roid test somewhere down the line, does he still have a chance to be the best of the USC LBers?

Sorry, I thought you were talking about Cushing for a minute. The rumor of the failed drug test was disproved for both USC players. So as far as I know, Matthews hasn't failed a drug test and Maualuga ain't getting any less dumb. He'll fit right in with the Bengals. Odds on how soon he'll run into trouble with the popo?

Why Maualuga fell to round 2:

The problem with Maulauga is that as much of a wrecking ball as he is on the field, he's a bit of a space cadet. I'm not just talking off the field, where he reportedly scored a 15 on the Wonderlic and didn't know who Vice President Joe Biden was, but on it as well. No one frustrated USC coaches more than Maualuga. He looked like he was running around with his head cut off and looking to hit anything that moved. The more tape pro coaches watched on Maualuga, the more times they probably saw him being saved by his teammates on missed assignments.

Are you suggesting that a 200 lb college junior who sat next to the waterboy for three years, with high expectations coming from an NFL family, who all the sudden gained 40 lbs of muscle and became an All-American, are you suggesting that such a player may have used performance enhancers???
