Obviously we could fill some of these needs through free agency signings including re-signing of our own.
Brown,Graham,Evans,Pass,Seau,Banta-Cain,Samuel,Mickens are free agents
-------------------------------------------------------
QB always a need for a #3
RB/FB we need a FB
WR we need one (although I would be fine with extending what we have)
(we'll bring a few into camp in any case)
OL all set through 2008
TE we need one
DL we could replace Hill. otherwise we are set through 2008
LB we need three (the time to find the future Bruschi is now)
CB we need two
S all set
ST all set

BOTTOM LINE
High need - LB,CB (we need five)
Medium need - WR,TE
Minor need - FB, DL, QB
No need - OL, S, ST

A total need of ten players is not all that high going into the off-season.

we dont really need a FB..Evans has played well..Pass is under contract? I like him as a receiver out of backfield

QB - No need

RB - a guy late round 5-6 who we might try to mold into our system as a power back for future

WR - A need for depth at very least. Round 1-2..a guy who knows his routes..speed would be nice.

TE - If Graham leaves..we need a very good blocker. Watson and Thomas can be very good receivers but their blocking isnothing compared to DG. (im not sold on Mills as anything yet) so possible round 4 pick if we can get a great blocker or just a FA pickup. Graham wont get the franchise..if anyone its just samuel

OL - Tackles would be nice. Kazcur is a liablity more than Light. Get a guy anywhere from round 3-4 who can play left tackle aswell as right(Light can be moved..O'C can play right and be a great run blocker) Kazcur hasnt farred well this year

DL - I dont see any need..Hill will be gone, is Wright an FA? If so, we can use depth at NT if Wright is an FA but if he stays, were fine since he does Nt and DE

LB - Round 1 pick MUST, i dont see athletism really..our speed has dimished. get a guy who can learn and come in and play. Athletic, fast and smart..we need someone for the future. TBC has played great at times, but hes an FA, Brus and Vrabel are old and Colvin is fine imo. A round 1 pick or a big FA pickup is a must

DB - Corner is a need imo..Samuel or not, we can use a CB whos young and could be future starter. Round 1 or 2..Safety i would pick in round 4-5 who can play ST..who knows..we can get a steal

Nice analysis. I do think S is more of a need, as Rodney will be 34 and I believe Wilson should be coming up on FA in a year or two. It's definitely more than "no need". If we resign Graham, then TE is all set. Also P could be a need and I'd like to see one drafted.

1. LINEBACKER - inside or out, a playmaker whos fast, athletic and smart.(Willis, Timmons, 3-4 DEs)

2. CORNERBACK - Samuel or not, we need some youth on the depth..possible starter.

3. WIDE RECEIVER - A guy who knows his routes and is a smart player

4. TACKLE - We might need a left or right tackle..Light could get moved to right and then we need a stud LT. Kazcur hasnt played aswell as last year..we need a guy who can do well against speed rushers(McNeil type)

5. SAFETY - Safety isnt as big a need..Wilson-Harrison-TeBucky Jones are all good and are coming back healthy next year. Hawkins-Sanders have played very well so Safety isnt a real need anymore(Give us a guy in like round 4-5 or something..CJ Gattis, JD Nelson idk)

those are primary 4.

1a. LB
1b. CB/WR
2. ^CB/WR(1 that we didnt take)
3. if we can get a good tackle here who slips, take him if not, safety could be picked

i like the way ur thinkin on this... only thing i dont quite agree with is the TE thing...i think they picked up Thomas and Mills in order to groom them to fill grahams role. we used our 3rd and 4th last year on TE's . If we dont keep graham i think drafting another TE wouldnt do much good, we are going to have two 2nd year TE, plus watson. Mills isnt exactly a true TE but BB has said himself that the FB/RB/TE positions are interchangable. Sorry didnt mean to try and call you out, i think you hit the nail right on the head with your analysis. Maybe a good FA blocker though...

also, i think with the first 3 picks (1a,1b,2) we should go LB,CB,WR with my only preference is that LB be picked with either the 1a or 1b. Then either a S or CB with 3rd and if i am hearing correctly, we get a couple of comp picks in the 4th - 6th area so that could be good depth at the O-line, DB, LB.

I think the way our offense looked earlier we need a facelift....bring in a guy or two (patrick pass may help) and we could look great offensively. other then that i think we shoudl focus on defense, its been our trademark over our run and its proven to work. Colts can draft all the offense they want, good defense has proven to work alot better.

LB has to be #1 although I think we'll look to FA not the draft. We need an ILB and an OLB (TBC is a UFA and Bruschi probably only has one year left). We desperately need some speed there.

LT is still #2 on my list despite what happened last Sunday. Light could be a really good RT, I'd love to get a stud LT. O'Callaghan would be a great RT backup and Kaczur has shown he can be a backup anywhere on the line (except maybe Center).

Safety is #3. Sanders looks like he could be a solid replacement for Rodney but the other Safety spot has an OK Hawkins with Wilson who has been hurt two straight years, whose play has levelled off and who is a UFA after next year. A Landry, Griffin, etc, to go with Sanders could be a long term solution.

CB is next but that's if Samuel leaves. Without being replaced.

WR depending how they think Chad Jackson will be next year. If they think he's close this isn't much of a need. If they think it's 50-50 we'll see the same again, this moves up to #2 after LB.

TE depending on Graham

DL - Belichick always looks at big bodies on the DL, don't be surprised . . .

I think we'll add a LB from both FA and the draft. From the draft, we may go as early as round one with a DE/OLB like Abiamiri or Spencer. The last two drafts we did select Ryan Claridge and Jeremy Mincey both on day two -- so there's been an interest in that position. Abiamiri or Spencer would represent VALUE at #24.

In the past I've liked some of the undersized LBs like Ernie Sims, Demeco Ryans and Vilma. This draft we have Willis and Posluszny to consider. If BB were to select a smaller LB early, I'd be pleasantly surprised...but I doubt he will. So I'll just focus on the DE/OLBs.

LT is still #2 on my list despite what happened last Sunday. Light could be a really good RT, I'd love to get a stud LT. O'Callaghan would be a great RT backup and Kaczur has shown he can be a backup anywhere on the line (except maybe Center).
I don't know how we'd get a "stud LT" in later rounds. That position's always in demand, tend to go early, and sometimes bust. In addition, most of the O-Line prospects are OGs or RTs -- very few with LT experience. But of course, in the draft -- anything's possible.

The need for a DB (CB or Safety) is twofold:

First is the strength of the DB position in round one and where we select. Looking at the prospects, there's a good chance a quality DB will slide to #24 -- making him a VALUE PICK.

Secondly, if that DB is a potential impact player/playmaker like Rodney, Law, or Samuel, it's a no-brainer to select him NOW especially when Rodney will retire soon and Samuel may depart. And your comment about Geno is true -- he's not the same player. Most importantly, the need for a difference-maker in our secondary is a HUGE complement to our DL -- which remains the strength of the D. Drafting a DB in round one is not about adding a body. It's about adding or replacing playmakers.

WR depending how they think Chad Jackson will be next year. If they think he's close this isn't much of a need. If they think it's 50-50 we'll see the same again, this moves up to #2 after LB.
The development of Jackson is a consideration, but it's way too early for us to bail on him just yet. I agree, a healthy Jackson receiving valuable reps in TC and pre-season will produce a different player. But how productive, is the question...

I'm open to BB drafting a WR somewhere -- but seriously doubt we go round one. He's drafted 3 WRs in round two thus far. He'll do it again if the value is there. I like our current WR corps, but feel we need Jackson or another to be part of the mix. I'm just not enamoured with the round one crop...but do like a few of the second-rounders better.

TE depending on Graham
Ditto.

This would be the surprise pick of round one.

I think in order to do this well you have to differentiate between what you can pick up in the draft and what you can pick up in FA.

I think we all pretty much agree that the 3 key areas of need are CB, LB, and WR.

I think we are fine in the OL (Light, Mankins, Koppen, Neal, Kazur, O'Callahan, Britt, Hockstein) We will only keep 9 guys and the first 8 are all locked up, with guys like Yates and Murskowski fighting for the 9th position.

I think we are fine on the DL (Green, Seymour, Wright, Warren, Wilfolk, and Hill) Hill's been a disappointment, but they've kept him around for 3 years so they see something. I don't see us improving on him in the second day.

If Graham stays we will obviously stay pat. If he goes, I still don't see us drafting any TE's. We can get another Christian Fauria if Mills doesn't work out, in FA.

I'd stay pat at RB, and just bring in Camp fodder.

I'm sure we all will be a buzz about who will be the #3 QB, but I bet its a vet from FA.

I might disagree about safety. I know Wilson, Rodney, and Jones will be back, but if someone like Micheal Griffin from Tex drops down to the 24th spot, I'd be hard pressed to pass him up. I'd grab him and move Wilson back to the Corner.

The best big CB is my first choice, then the LB, then the WR in the draft. However I still believe that ANY LB who comes here in the draft is a project, a situational player. I firmly believe that coming out of college to play in this system requires 3 years to reach their potential. College LB's are very hard to project into the Pats system. Also remember that EVERY LB we currently have played on the DL in college. That is why I believe that the Pats will go hard after some vet LBs. I think they will open the purse strings to get an A list FA. My guess is that they will go hard after both Briggs from Chicago and/or Thomas from Baltimore. If their price is too high then look for us to after guys like Sam Cowart or London Fletcher.

That being said, I'd love to see us get faster at LB and get a great athlete who can rush the pass, but have the speed to cover on passes. W haven't had a good cover LB since Roman Phifer.

Then in the second round, get the best speed WR to add to the stable. I think this is Troy's last year so we will start the camp with Jackson, Gaffney, Caldwell, and Kight. Add a draft pick and a veteran FA, and I'd be happy to whittle down that group to the best 5. BTW- Maybe a top FA could be added, like that kid Furrey from the Lions.
