I "start" with these 48, understanding that several are not locks. For example, I include Scott, Wendell, Warren and Barrett who certainly could be beaten out.

IMHO, the remaining 5 positions are completely wide open.

4th WR
9th OL
8th DB
9th DB
25th defensive player

Personally, I see no serious needs except for OL depth.

Only 3 corners?
Only 3 WRs?
Only 2 OLBs, including one that is a longshot to make the team, and just 5 total LBs?
Why Gerard Warren over Ron Brace?

No way Sterling Moore is left off of the roster, he will be there in the end. I think I see what you were doing by saying that "x" number of positions are completely up in the air. This, therefore precluding you from naming the winners of those position battles. So, I'm going to add that I have a hunch that Branch will unfortunately be on the final roster regardless. But, if only one makes it, I would much rather that spot go to Stallworth.

Here's my thought:

I guess you're not expecting the Pats to do much long snapping this season.

1) I listed a 48 man roster. I listed the FIVE open positions (see below for what I posted before). I guess that you can only respond to 53 man rosters.

2) I expect us to carry 9-10 defensive backs. Five would need to be able to play corner.

3) Separating out OLB's from DE's and ILB's is your specialty not mine. List Ninkovich and Scott as OLB's and there are plenty.

4) I like Warren much better as a DT than Brace. However, I'm fine with Brace as the 53rd defensive player.

5) I listed SIX wide receiver positions, same as everyone. 3 are on the 48 man roster. 1 is an open position (Branch or Stallworth). Edelman and Slater are included in specialists.

==========
FROM PREVIOUS POST

Oops, well I'm sure Edelman could learn long snapping and add another notch to his belt.

You keep 10 OL's and both Branch and Stallworth. In order to get these two extra roster spots on offense, you cut Edelman and Slater. This part of your plan doesn't work for me.

Agreed, but I do think that Branch and Stallworth will prove useful enough to both make the cut.

This was tough. Some hard decisions to make (many of which will probably be made by injuries unfortunately), notably I had to cut Koppen, Brace, Branch, and Warren (who I think is a shadow roster player though).

QB (3) Tom Brady, Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett

I have a feeling Ebner will make his mark on special teams, and that Edelman will do enough as a receiver to earn his spot there (and make Branch a luxury they can't afford). Ebner essentially takes Allen's spot, though I could see Allen beating out Dennard too.

My base defense is a 4-2-5. And, I think Bobby Carpenter is way too slow to help us. I see a lot of people have him on the 53. I'm going with 25 on defense, 25 on offense and 3 st. Won't be shocked if we try to pick up a veteran ol and dl.

DT's/Fatties - Play dt in 4-2-5 or 3 man line in 3-4. I want 6

V. Wilfork
B. Deaderick
J. Fanene
K. Love
G. Warren
?? I'll say Ron Brace for now. Very open to change. Pryor if healthy. Ha

OLB/DE - Play olb in the 3-4 and in nickel package de.

C. Jones
R. Ninkovich
J. Cunningham
J. Bequette
T. Scott or J. Francis

ILB - Play ILB in 3-4 or 2 linebacker spot in 4-2-5

J. Mayo
B. Spikes
D. Hightower
D. Fletcher

CB
K. Arrington
D. McCourty
R. Dowling
S. Moore
W. Allen
A. Dennard

S
P. Chung
S. Gregory
T. Wilson
J. Ihedigbo

ST
S. Gostkowski
Z. Mesko
D. Aiken

QB; Brady, Hoyer and Mallett
RB; Woodhead, Ridley, Vereen and Larsen
TE; Gronk, Hernandez and Shiancoe
WR; Welker, Lloyd, Gaffney, Edelman, Slater, Branch or Stallworth
C; Connolly and Koppen
G; Mankins, Waters, Thomas and Wendell
T; Solder, Vollmer and Cannon

Top 3 battles

1. 6th DL Pryor or Brace or Trade
2. 5th OLB Scott or Francis
3. 6TH WR Branch or Stallworth

Some tough cuts. Branch,Carpenter, Tarp and White probably the most.

I'd be ok with only 2 QBs this year. If Brady goes down, my expectation for the post season will drastically shift.

The porblem there would be dropping Hoyer or Mallet...let the preseason show their wares and maybe see if an injury happens.

My tough cuts were Koppen, and Branch of offense, Pryor, Warren and Carpenter on defense, and Tracy White/Marquice Cole on Special Teams/Defense in desperation only. I'm hoping C. Jones and T. Scott are flexible enough to give the OLB rotation some depth when the Pats play 3-4 looks, but I'm assuming either a 4-3 or a 4-2-5 look most of the time

And, I think Bobby Carpenter is way too slow to help us.

He ran the same 40 as Mayo and was faster than Hightower. If Carpenter doesn't make it, it won't be because he's too slow, as reports I've read have stated he looks like the best coverage backer in camp.

On another note, if Nate Ebner can show any ability at S whatsoever, I'd keep him over Ihedigbo.

Some interesting choices. I haven't got the whole roster but a few predictions:

Bolden makes the team. He'd never make it past waivers.
Edelman is a lock.
Stallworth is one of first WR's cut.
I wouldn't bet the farm that Slater makes the team. Things are very tight at WR and S. Not saying he won't but it's far from a lock.
Ebner won't make it.
Carpenter will.
Dennard too, though maybe on IR.

Never the shy one, BB trades or cuts Trevor Scott to keep Francis.

I wouldn't bet the farm that Slater makes the team. Things are very tight at WR and S. Not saying he won't but it's far from a lock.

Irrespective of how things look at WR/S, Slater makes it because he's one of, if not the best STs player in the league.

Think we needed a bit more beef, so there are some fatties there, one of whom (of Pryor, Brace, Deaderick) goes when/if Carter gets back.
TE is going to be rough when Fells and Ballard come back.
I maybe have too many STers (White, Slater, Fletcher) and not enough FA pickups (Allen, Scott, Stallworth) and also dumped Sergio Brown. PS is Ebert, Ebner, Francis, etc. Dennard makes it to the 53 because of stature. Barrett could be expendable though he is there more as a fifth safety. Not sold on Carpenter and Fletcher can OLB. Defensive backfield is weak.
