A torn MCL and ACL. That is severe. Hopefully he will be back by September.

    Re: Welker's Injury Confirmed

This part seems dubious but encouraging:

Welker, who suffered the injury in the first quarter of New England’s 34-27 loss to Houston while planting the leg to make a cut, is expected to make a full recovery for the start of next season.

Yeah, but you have to wonder if that is the writer's assessment or something the doctor's are saying.

    Re: Welker's Injury Confirmed

As desperate as I am to believe this...expected by whom? Wes? Doctors? Trainers? Coaches? Dreams of Pats fans everywhere? Who, damn it, WHO?!?!?!?! Okay, I'll calm down now. :D

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Wes, and not just for my own selfish reasons!

    Re: Welker's Injury Confirmed

As long as there's no additional damage, like to the meniscus, he could be back for week 1 and should be back after a stint on the pup. Braylon Edwards met that timetable, Deion Branch met that timetable. Whether it happens and whether there's setbacks, who knows, but the timetable is realistic for a return at the latest after a PUP stint.

My totally uneducated guess is he's more likely for a "clean" ligament tear as there was no contact and no player forcing the knee into weird positions with unusual forces.

    Re: Welker's Injury Confirmed

After having knee injuries of the magnitude, I can tell you the minicus is the LEAST of his worries. The scarring from previous injuries will in fact be just as much of a factor as the new tear. As for the contact not causing it, its normal for this to happen. A lot of times you can even walk directyl after it happens. It really does suck for Welker, he has been the BEST slot receiver in the last decade. The players that you mentioned who have came back like normal, when did those injuries occur? This late in the season? I know the Ravens DB, Webb haas a similar injury and they are expecting him to bwe on the PUP list to start next year.

    Re: Welker's Injury Confirmed

I was an athletic trainer for my first 3 years of college and have seen guys come back 100% from these injuries for the next season as long as they do the rehab and do exactly as the doctors say.....I believe that with the facilities and Dr's the Pats have he will get the top of the line treatment and he is a hard worker so I do believe he will be in great health to start next season......

Heck, the only reason Brady had to have the extra procedures done on his knee was because he over-exerted himself. . . .

Hopefully Wes won't deviate either. However, my assumption is that he not exactly a "sit on the couch and watch Golden Girls reruns" type of guy.

Are you insinuating Brady is? He went down in week one and was still a bit shaky at the start of this season.

Excellent news if he can be back by week 1. I would gladly take somewhere around week 6-8

    Re: Welker's Injury Confirmed

He'll have a pretty good and likely pretty involved mentor in QB12. They are so alike in that drive to prove they can do it even when all the experts doubt them that I think he will make it back although because of the position he plays it will take Wes a little longer and he may never be quite as quick or explosive again. But he will find a way around that too because that's what he and Brady and guys like them do. Improve somewhere else to compensate for the one thing you perhaps cannot improve.

    Re: Welker's Injury Confirmed

That wasn't the knee shaking. It was his timing being rusty and needing to absorb those first couple of hits and apparently his ribs being cracked and his WR corps and OL being in flux and teams unveiling their latest versions of the blueprint.

    Re: Welker's Injury Confirmed

He was wearing a brace and had a slight limp...... That all points to a weakend knee and rightfully so.

    Re: Welker's Injury Confirmed

A QB with mechanics and reads is different than any other position. I think people tend to forget that for QB's, the second year is the year for full recovery.

Does anyone know if weight is a determining factor? Would this injury limit a 185 lb Welker vs a 240 lb RB?
