it looks really like this team could be the best ever; since i am able to follows the Patriots i have this impression

    yr opinion ?

was the team 1976-1978 better also without any Super Bowl ring ?

was one of the 3 rings a better team ?

I said before the season that on paper this was our best team ever. So far that has translated to the field. Will it continue ? I don't know but if it does then, yes, it's our best team ever. It's certainly the best 4 game stretch we've ever had.

The 70s team that was screwed by the official in the Oakland game was the only reason that team did not win the SB that year..They were an awesome bunch then but this team has better overall talent and the overall talent of the league is better now as well IMO

that's true; 4 wins (3 games with 38 points scored and 1 with 34); impressive...and without Seymour and Harrison...

It's the most potent on offense and super solid on D. But I think they will have to seal the deal ( SB win) before I can say "best ever".

1976 team seems could have won the Super Bowl as far as i was able to read and 'listen' from all of you without that terrible game @ Oak

this year team talent looks at his best till now

Until this season plays out, the 2004 team is the best ever...

    1. Superbowl title defense (every week had bullseye on back)
    2. Second 17-2 season in a row (again, with bullseye on back every week)
    3. Held 49TD Manning Colts to 3pts in playoff
    4. Put up 41 on stellar Pittsburgh D in their house for AFCCG
    5. Beat clearly best NFC team in Eagles.
    6. Playoff opponents' combined regular season records were 40-8. Considering the Colts & Steelers played backups in their finales and the Eagles played backups in their final two, the record of these teams in games that they tried to win was 39-5 (Pitt still managed to beat Buffalo with "backup" Willie Parker).
6a. Add in the playoff games these teams won prior to their Pats loss and their record was 43-5. Take out their regular season matchups vs. the Pats and the combined records of these teams in all non-Pats games that they tried to win was 42-4.

    Regards,
    Chris

Yeah but the camera did all that! [IMG]

I'm just kidding. Seriously though, I really can't comment on the 70's team since I was born in '74. I will say that the 2004 team was as lights out as it gets. To go 17-2 in the AFC & playoffs was incredible. Their record versus the best teams in the league speaks for itself. I think this years team, so far, and on paper, is more talented. We'll see if they can duplicate the 2004 team.

Agreed. That team dominated its way through the toughest playoff tests of any of the 3 champions. The '01 team caught all the breaks and got lucky many times. The '03 team was put to the test every week and struggled to win each game.

The 2004 Colts may have been the best of all the Indy teams. The Steelers that year were the only AFC team to win 15 regular season games EVER. Indy and Pitt went on to win Super Bowls, and are undeniably the #2 and #3 franchises of the decade.

Now, if our current group can dominate it's way through the regular season and take out three legit contenders en route to #4, then we can talk best ever.

As of four games, we are the best football team I am aware of in the history of the NFL.

Line us up against ANY team in football history in their first four games of the season, versus our first four games, and we beat them.

Contrary to what a lot of critics have said during the Pats dynasty run, football teams are getting bigger, stronger, and faster. A good team from this era is bigger, stronger, faster than a good team from the 70's or 80's, even the 90's.

As far as the rest of the year goes, I hope for the best but don't want to jump to conclusions until it happens on the field. I am optimistic, however. ;)

I think this team has the potential to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest team in all of football... A very well rounded team, with playmakers in every level of the game.. I think we could be watching greatness..

I agree they were screwed, but they still would have had to win 2 more games to win the SB. There was no guarantee of that.
Its hard for me to say a team that lost in its first playoff game because of a call, would have won the next 2 also if the bad call didn't happen.

True, however it was at least 3 hideously bad calls...and the field had been soaked in water for like a week until the game started to slow the Pats down. :(

If we can't cling to false pride, we ain't got much to look back on before 1996 or so...

Do we need anything prior to 2001 to look back on? We've gotten more in 6 years than most franchises have in a lifetime.

I am not the crying type. I am old school. But there is a reason I just about broke down after the Oakland playoff game in 2001.

When I watch the Three games to glory DVDs, that moment still chokes me up. Something was so magically mended that day.

Revenge is best served in the snow.

I use to think the '76 team was the best pats team of all timerelative to era's. They still hol the record for rushing ave per game 200+. And I believe they would have destroyed the Vikings in the SB that year. But I know dthink this is the best pats team ever assembled. From the record setting offense to the stingy defense. Best ever.

It's still early in the season, but as of now, I'd give the nod to the 1976 team, they were absolutely loaded on both sides of the ball, got royally screwed in that playoff game, they would have smoked the injury riddled Steelers (a team they beat earlier that season in Pittsburg) and the aging Vikings, a team on the back nine of their 1970's Super Bowl run................
