he is looking for a contract that is better than haynesworths? That is what is being reported by Mort on espn. I just cannot see the patriots trading for a guy who wants that type of contract and would be playing a new position.

    Nope

I dont believe that runor though, Haynesworth is the premeire dlinemen in the game a position much more expensive than OLB if Peppers wants to be LB he has to know his contract will reflect it.

If that's what it's going to take, then the Patriots simply can't afford it. </story>

Re: Do you still want Peppers if....

    No way. Team first.

Wilfork will be the biggest contract on the Pats after QB, assuming we can resign him. Peppers can be somewhere in Moss territory, maybe around 4 years at $35-45M. If that can't do it, then we move on.

Screw ESPN and their flock of donkeys. Peppers is looking to play in the 34 for a contender. No 34 teams that are contenders can afford to pay him remotely near that.

I don't trust, read or believe anything mortensen says and we're not giving someone a ridiculous 100 million dollar deal when he hasn't even played a down on the OLB position. It's great we have interest, but we should stick to our "spread the wealth" mentality.

Nein. He's a frikkin' conversion project, and he knows it. While projections say it will work, on the 10% chance it doesn't we would have a load of angry players and look foolish.

NEVER happen. Give the cash to Vince.

Re: Do you still want Peppers if....

What were people expecting Peppers to want? I mean, he is a top tier D-lineman just like haynesworth. I know they play different positions on the line but Peppers pass rush ability makes him a hot commodity. I know that he is talking about wanting to play in a 3-4 and here that would be at OLB, but I do not think he is going to want less money because of a position change. What type of contract would you want him to sign for here that would make you feel comfortable?

I already said, something in Moss territory ($10/year), maybe in the 4 years at $35-45M range.

Lets sign this guy, keep him at DE and trade Seymour at the draft for someone's first next year ..

I felt that before the Haynesworth deal that he might be too expensive. Now I strongly believe that.

No. I'd rather see us lock up Wilfork for the long-term before they spent a dime on Peppers.

Re: Do you still want Peppers if....

Laddy, that's a nasty a lose-lose scenerio as I've read in some time. If there's a knock on Peppers, it's his strength at the point of attack, he's not even close to Richard Seymour as a 3-4 DE.

Peppers turned down a contract extension from the Panthers that would have made him the highest paid defender in the league. It shouldn't be a shock that he wants to be paid a ton of money.

I think that's the exact opposite of what he said. I only heard the end but he said it would be a good fit for the Pats, and that Peppers would want to come here (the only afc team on his wishlist).

Re: Do you still want Peppers if....

If Peppers wants to play LB in a 3-4 scheme, he should expect to be paid as a LB in a 3-4. If he wants to play his position, DE in a 43 scheme, he can expect to be paid for that. It would take a pretty stupid team personnel office to make him the highest paid LB in a 3-4 when he has no real track record in that position. The franchise value for a linebacker is $8.3 million. meaning the average of the top 5 highest paid LBs for that position. Is Peppers a top 5 linebacker right now? Does he expect something in the vicinity of $17 million to play LB?

No way is Peppers worth twice the franchise tag as a LB right now. If he believes he should be the highest paid LB at this point, there is no way that deal gets done. The problem is the Pats could justify a higher value if they were going to use him as a DE in a 43 scheme and a linebacker in the 34 scheme for different looks, but that would seem to run counter to what Peppers wants to do, which is get away from the 43 DE role.

He is an interesting case given the diversity of roles he could perform and his talent, but if his ego is making him believe he is high-priced at any position, he does not have the brains to make this transition happen.

Nothing to do with Peppers but that the deal is not happening is what I meant he said.

Re: Do you still want Peppers if....

Nicely said. If Peppers wants to play here for something similar to what Dansby or Suggs are making, then I'm for it. If he wants $14+M/year, then no way. It all comes down to how serious he is about wanting to play in the 3-4 as an OLB and play for a winner.

I don't think anyone begrudges him the fact that he wants it. We just all understand that if that is what he wants, then he's not going to get it from the Pats.

hahahaha.... no. Seymour's a better 3-4 DE than Peppers will ever be.

What? Since when did Peppers become *the* premiere DE/OLB in the NFL? He's good, really good, but he's not Reggie White circa 1987.

    Regards,
    Chris

he'd probably end up being what we hoped Rosie would be for us (before he got hurt). Nice addition, but only at a reasonable pricetag.
