Division tiebreakers

Yeah I forgot about the bye.

Just tell me who to root for every week lol :bricks:

Who to root for? Start with Washington tonight. A few Ravens loses will be a good thing.

Regarding tie breakers: Miami has the common opponents tie break win right now. The Jets have the division tie breaker win right now. Not a good path for the Patriots to win the Division right now (even if the Patriots win their remaining 3 games). But assuming the Patriots win their remaining 3 games, they'll still need a little help to make the playoffs. That help is in the form of Baltimore losses. Baltimore has a tough schedule. Them losing 2 games seems quite possible. However, the Patriots must win ALL 3 games remaining regardless. They lose even one and they will need A LOT of help from both Miami and the Jets (not likely considering their schedules)

Also we need the Dolphins to beat the Jets because we beat the Jets by more than they beat us and I think that would get us past them.

Let's just make things up, eh?

Actually this whole thread is a testament to the idea that most people aren't really very smart, and can't accurately process what they read and then think things through to a logical conclusion. So many incorrect posts, when the relevant tiebreaking rules are clear.

Thanks :) It was the tie-breaker scenarios that had me confused

TO BREAK A TIE WITHIN A DIVISION

If, at the end of the regular season, two or more clubs in the same division finish with identical won-lost-tied percentages, the following steps will be taken until a champion is determined.
Two Clubs

1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
5. Strength of victory.
6. Strength of schedule.
7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
9. Best net points in common games.
10. Best net points in all games.
11. Best net touchdowns in all games.
12. Coin toss

Three or More Clubs

(Note: If two clubs remain tied after third or other clubs are eliminated during any step, tie breaker reverts to step 1 of the two-club format).

1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games among the clubs).
12. Coin toss

TO BREAK A TIE FOR THE WILD-CARD TEAM

If it is necessary to break ties to determine the two Wild-Card clubs from each conference, the following steps will be taken.

1. If the tied clubs are from the same division, apply division tie breaker.
2. If the tied clubs are from different divisions, apply the following steps.

Two Clubs

1. Head-to-head, if applicable.
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
4. Strength of victory.
5. Strength of schedule.
6. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
7. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
8. Best net points in conference games.
9. Best net points in all games.
10. Best net touchdowns in all games.
11. Coin toss.

Three or More Clubs

(Note: If two clubs remain tied after third or other clubs are eliminated, tie breaker reverts to step 1 of applicable two-club format.)

1. Apply division tie breaker to eliminate all but the highest ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. The original seeding within a division upon application of the division tie breaker remains the same for all subsequent applications of the procedure that are necessary to identify the two Wild-Card participants.
2. Head-to-head sweep. (Applicable only if one club has defeated each of the others or if one club has lost to each of the others.)
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
5. Strength of victory.
6. Strength of schedule.
7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
9. Best net points in conference games.
10. Best net points in all games.
11. Best net touchdowns in all games.
12. Coin toss

When the first Wild-Card team has been identified, the procedure is repeated to name the second Wild-Card, i.e., eliminate all but the highest-ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. In situations where three or more teams from the same division are involved in the procedure, the original seeding of the teams remains the same for subsequent applications of the tie breaker if the top-ranked team in that division qualifies for a Wild-Card berth.

Or you can think of it from the back forwards......If the Ravens win tonite(Washington) and their next 2(Pitt,Dallas), and both the phins(SF,KC) and jest(Buf,Sea) win their next 2 games....we will be out of it BEFORE week 17. Not getting in at 11-5 will be almost as bad as 2002 when we beat Miami that last week in OT only to have GB lose to the jest.......or it may have been 4 SBs in a row!!

Sorry to be the one to have to burst the bubble, however, we would still not be out of it. If the next 2 weeks play out as you suggest, the Patriots could still win the division with a win in week 17 and a Jets/Phins TIE. Imagine ending with an 11 and 5 record yet having to root for a tie just to get into the playoffs? That is sickeningly laughable....

The Pats do not control their own destiny really. They have to hope the Jets and Dolphins lose at least another game since both are ahead of the Pats.
Pats can win out and not make it. Steelers and Ravens probably both make it. Dolphins win out and they win the division and with the niners, chiefs and maybe some Pennington revenge on the Jets who knows.I do not trust the Jets much.

But, whoever wins the East likely is the third seed at 11-5, am not sure 10-6 is enough. Broncos likely will be 4th in the end with 9 or 10 wins with a win or two out of these 3. (Panthers, Bills, Chargers)

In the end no room for error for the Pats, Jets and Dolphins. You probably have to win the division to get in.

The Pats have that with both teams because the Pats lost both strength of schedule games (Colts and Steelers). I thought conference record was third, but you are right that it is common opponents first.
Conference record is not one of the tiebreakers for winning the division.

Well, my grandfather didnt like the catholics much so he would always root for BC/Notre Dame to tie....one year they did, and you would have thought his team had won the SB or something.
Ties aside, there is the distinct possibility that the phins/jest could play BACK TO BACK games(as the pats/phins did years ago)week 17 and week 1 of the playoffs...both at NJ. There is the real possibility we could come in 3rd in our division....
