Dan Reeves was interviewed via phone on "Outside the Lines" on ESPN:

According to Reeves he used to have his backup QB try and figure out defensive signals while on the sidelines, and one of his QB's was particularly good at this and usually by half time he'd have their defensive signals figured out.

Reeves claims that really what it helps for is Blitz pickups, but it doesn't always work in game since teams can change their signals. He said a long time ago when he played against Mike Shanahan he actually knew all the Broncos signals because they were still using the same signals but they still couldn't stop the Broncos. He said thet where it can have the biggest effect is by adding the info you gained into a folder of information on that team and after time you can start to figure out their tendencies. Reeves said stealing signals itself is very common and every team does it, but he's not aware of other teams using video cameras to do so.

Re: Dan Reeves on Signal Stealing

So that's Parcells, Shula, Reeves saying "signal stealing" is common although video is not. Any word from Cowher, a coach who the Pats played (and beat) a few times?

Cowher will probably say the same thing as the said trio did. He's looking for another job and there's no way he'll come out and admit to video taping.

See I'm not so sure Cowher would say he was screwed, I think he may come down on the "everyone does it" side.

Latest ESPN Recap Toning it down

I just finished watching the latest episode of Outside the Lines and it really toned down the severity of the supposed Patriots scandal in Giants stadium.

Len Pascorelli - "This goes on all the time...it's getting trumped-up and there is an element of "Piling-up" on the Patriots going on"

Dan Reeves - "Stealing signals happens all the time...it doesn't really help that much...although I don't recall ever using cameras...we had a guy on our sidelines reading their signals and trying to relay them back to our guys"

Like I've said since Monday, this is really not that big a deal. Certainly not worthy of feeling like our Patriots are the biggest cheaters ever. Cheating is part of football just as it is part of baseball.

As time goes on, we are going to learn that this tactic and many others are par for the course around the NFL. The enduring impact of this story will be to reveal just what a whiny traitorous loser Mangini really is. We know it, and soon the whole league will be mocking mozart-playing "mangenius". Talk about a cat who got too big for his britches, literally. My prediction for the Jets season: ManGina will add 50 lbs of jelly donut weight by January.

I honestly think people are piling on now, to get some draft picks docked from the Pats...and once thats done with, it will disappear. Pats losing picks is an advantage for everyone...

As I wrote earlier, the real crime is the Patriots stupidity in putting a guy on the sidelines in Patriots staff garb with a video camera. They only forgot to give him a flashing neon sign.

Either the Pats are trying to make some kind of point, or they were very stupid.

Sean Salisbury is now saying this is overblown and not that big of a deal on NFL Live. Looks like a few people are finally coming to their senses.

    Honest opinions:

I'm dissapointed in BB for using cameras to record the signals since he knew the league was cracking down on this and knew it was against the rules. I'm especially dissapointed since he could have just figured out their signals the old fashioned way without getting in trouble at all.

I'm dissapointed in Mangini for ratting out the guy who gave him a shot in the NFL. Let's be honest this also reflects badly on Mangini's "morals" if you think about it. While he was with NE he found their tactics perfectly fine since he was part of the "machine" if you will, but once he jumps ship he starts ratting the Patriots out to other teams and acts holier than thou. Frankly, Mangini was a nobody until BB gave him a shot so even if he now works for the Jets it still seems kind of sad he'd be the one to rat on BB like this. To think I used to like Mangini....

Now I'm also dissapointed with the league since it's obvious stuff at least simular to this goes on with just about every team, but for some reason video taping signals is so much worse than all the other ways teams steal signals.

Now this all being said even though I don't want to have the Patriots lose a high draft pick (a first or second rounder) I'll be fine as long as BB doesn't get suspended and the verdict comes down soon so we can all just move along.

The league would just love to dismantle the house that the Patriots have built. Never mind how much they have done for the game of football in virtually eliminating the popularity of the superstar individuals who cared nothing about their team, making team the #1 priority and having players once again LOVE to play for their team...and taking home-town discounts!

    IT'S ALLLLLL ENVY!!!!!

We got caught, we should (and evidently are going to) take the punishment on the chin. However, the sheer hypocrisy coming out of all quarters of the NFL is sickening.

Very glad to see people like Dan Reeves speak up.

    shmess,
I think you may be wrong here. The reason BB did it so blatantly is he knew the Jets were doing it. The reason he knew the Jets were doing it was that he taught Mangini everything, and Mangini is a good learner. Normally, teams don't mess publicly with eachothers' sign stealing. It's an unwritten rule. They deal with it and take countermeasures. In this case the jets were at home and controlled on field access and security, so had the power if they wished to take the unprecedented step of punitive action. It was vindictive and over the top. As I've said before the real story here isn't the Pats at all, but the level of hatred from the Jets that would lead Mangini to needlessly humiliate the man who made him a millionaire.

I increasingly believe that the Pats were so brazen because they believed that what they were doing was not a violation of the policy. The guy is a scout getting game film that is mostly used after the game for tendency evaluations. The policy comes out about video and the Pats say "ok, now it's not 'mostly' about post game tendency, it has to be 100% about post game tendency evaluations." The only thing the policy changes is that you cannot use the film/tape AT ALL during the game.

No one yet has been able to describe what the rules are on obtaining game film for use after the game. For example, could the Pats have sent a scout to film the Chargers Bears game last week too, because they don't like the camera angles that are used in the league supplied film? Are league certified scouts allowed to film games and use that film? Since the Pats use their own scouts, could there be some overlap in policy here where you have one set of rules for third party scouts, and another set of rules for team officials, and then the "interpretation" comes in when a team employs it's own scouts and does not use a third party?

Or, the rule is subject to multiple interpretations.

All old-schoolers, I see. Then you have a loser like Jeff Fisher smugly asserting "There's no room for this in the game." and little pricks like Mangini leading the morality charge. It definitely seems like their is a divide between the old-schoolers and the younger coaches.

Go for it all you haters!

Take the Pats picks, but if you get caught, expect to have your picks taken as well.

The way I look at it, is if Roger is going to come down hard (as Clayton is thinking), then other teams/coaches will take note and will cease their cheating behaviors (assuming Roger gets harder on cheating). That means a more even playing field.

And on an even playing field, I'll take Bill and his genius over any other coach. Bill might have just helped himself. And if not, he will have to come up with a new way to ride the line of what is cheating and what isn't.
