I've been watching a lot of ESPN the last two days, and it hasn't been the gush fest I thought it was going to be over Peyton's 51 touchdown passes.

I'm not a huge fan of what ESPN has become, but I think here they get it right.
Of the 8 or so sports analysis shows I've seen since the record was broken, all of them have been pretty "meh" about the record, and a lot of the coverage I've seen actually finds ways to praise Brady over Peyton's 51.

It seems to me the NFL media follows a certain pattern every single season.
In the beginning of the year they hype up absolutely everything that they possibly can. New "elite" quarterbacks, teams roflstomping everyone in their path, early -and often ludicrous- Superbowl predictions, etc.

Then at the end of the season, sanity returns.

It's been sort of amazing to see the 180 degree turn on the Denver Broncos and Peyton Manning, which I said after Seattle curb stomped their starters in the preseason, was nothing but fools gold.

Nobody believes Peyton is going to do anything but lose in the play offs.
Like last year, he has lost to every legitimate challenge he's faced, while putting up Star Wars stats against NFL bottom feeders. This year they at least beat the Chiefs, but the Chiefs are just as much frauds as the Broncos, and lose horribly every time they face a decent quarterback.

As the season comes to its end, and minds shift to the post season, the entire world (outside Denver's delusional fan base) knows Peyton is going to wilt in the play offs.

    That's why nobody cares.

Passing records just aren't that impressive anymore. Until someone throws sixty, against a strong schedule, in lights out bombs over Baghdad fashion, I just don't think people are really going to care, which is why Tom Brady's 07' run was so much more impressive in the minds of... everybody.

Because on top of the fact that the 2007 Patriots played -and defeated- the absolute best defenses in the league, they shattered offensive records doing it.

Even if Denver breaks our offensive records this year, they won't be remembered as the best offense ever, because they aren't.

They've lost games. They've beaten nobody.

It's not very often I agree with NFL news coverage, considering how sensationalism driven it's become, but the lack of parades and fireworks for Manning's 51 is something I'm surprised and happy to see.

Now that week #5 is behind us, and everybody's minds have shifted to real football, I think everyone is just watching and waiting for Peyton and the Bronco pretenders to lay their egg in the play offs and go home, so the real football teams, and real championship quarterbacks, can go to battle for the Lombardi.

Would be nice to get through a day without a thread of self-conscious Peyton-bashing. Anything this guy does, we have to have 100 threads about how when Brady did it, it was much more impressive/difficult/cooler, whatever. The funny part is it is often in the context of Peyton getting too much attention.

    To put this in perspective:

    2013 Donkeys, average score: 38.1–25.6
    2007 Patriots, average score: 36.9–17.1

meh...Manning can have his records, for some reason throwing a lot touchdowns is no longer that impressive, heck even Stafford threw for 41 td in the 2011 season.I pay more attention to playoff records and Superbowl rings. Also i like Brady 07 campaign better because he won all his regular season games doing it,(except of course the Superbowl).Manning on the other hand lost several games. Anyway,at this rate every record will be broken.

Peyton can have all the attention he wants. It just makes the Manning face in the 4th quarter of his first play off game all the more enjoyable.

I'm simply saying that now that the play offs are coming, that attention has fallen off significantly, especially for someone who just threw 51 touchdown passes with screens and 40+ yards ATC

It is nice though that Manning and the Broncos are there. I would rather they have the spotlight as the offensive juggernaut. I think the Pats play better as backs-to- the- wall, disrespected underdog. If Manning somehow survives to the AFC championship game, oh how sweet it will be for the Pats to take him out!

Peyton arguably isn't even the best QB THIS YEAR.

Nick Foles has a higher QB rating than him :bricks: I think that says a lot.

My favorite comment came from Tom Curran, and I'm paraphrasing here: "In 2007 when the Patriots and Brady were rolling over everyone, lots of media members were grabbing their hymnals and moaning about them running up the score. Sunday, ahead 30-13 in the 4th quarter, Manning is throwing deep regularly. Media reaction: not a peep."

I have to admit, even as an open and unapologetic Manning hater, he was really gracious in his post game. I laughed when he said Brady would probably break it the next season.

Never seen him that gracious before, honestly.

Kudos to Manning for his new found graciousness!

re: Coverage of Peyton's 51 & Media in general.

Who are all these championship qbs you are referring to? There's only a handful of starting qbs that have rings. Eli will be on the sofa, and so will Big Ben barring a miracle. Even flacco has to have help and my money is they don't make it. Rodgers isn't going anywhere either.

So who is left? Brees, manning, and brady. And since manning is such a fraud, I guess I should just wait to tune in February to watch the pats vs the saints.

Or maybe the afc is wide open this year and any team...including a team that is about to break the scoring record has a pretty decent chance in an offensive league. Call me crazy.

re: Coverage of Peyton's 51 & Media in general.

What makes me laugh is when people have said it's the #1 greatest season for a QB in NFL history.

    Seriously?

In a season where in 1 of the few big games they had, he was spotted 24 points in still ended up losing?

Or how about earlier in the season when he lost yet another big, prime-time game against his former team, the Colts, where he threw an INT and fumbled for a safety?

Or when they played the Chargers at home, given a chance to drive down the field to tie the game, he throws an INT that seals the deal for another loss.

Greatest season ever? Not even. Way too many flaws.

Nah, because in the play offs Denver will have to actually play against good defenses, not the scrubs they've been abusing with 50 yard screen plays.

In high winds we moved the ball at will against Denver's defense, while Manning, against our injury riddled one, barely passed for 150 yards with 2 interceptions.

We don't spot them 17 points on fluke turn overs in the opening thirty seconds of the game, we blow the Broncos out by 30 points.

Bring on Denver's offense if they make it past their first round. I'm pretty sure we can stop it. It's a mix of what we always stop (Peyton Manning) and our 2013 offense which he stole after losing to it.

All Peyton Manning teams are the same. It was no different with the Colts.
In the post season, they'll wilt.

I agree, 100 threads on that is too many. One each time should suffice, because it's true: when Brady did it, it definitely WAS much more impressive/difficult/cooler, whatever. Face it -- Manning always has had a bit of cheap advantage in his favor, be it amassing stats in a dome or all-pro casts of receivers year-in and year-out. Brady remains THE MAN because he has done more with less in terms of winning championships.

re: Coverage of Peyton's 51 & Media in general.

To be fair...the broncos lost drc for the second half...and his replacement was targeted the entire second half. Reminded me of what happened with talib in the Baltimore playoff game.

Julius Thomas would also be back...and unfortunately gronk won't be...that's quite the tight end swing.

And most likely the weather won't be as extreme, which obviously affected a hobbled manning in that game

If the broncos and pats have a rematch..I think the game comes down to the end.

    peyton bashing is getting old.

everybody knows his place. he is a top 5 all time. media acknowledge him as a top 5 all tme, maybe top 3, but not many pimps him to be the GOAT. everybody knows he has a problem in cold weather, and problems delivering in a clutch situation. it's a known fact.

just move on. he is one of the greatest player i've ever seen. just not better than the GOAT brady. that's all.

Bring on all your Bronco talking points. They think they're going to win every time, and THAT time is finally going to be THE time, then we win again.

    Know how this story ends.

re: Coverage of Peyton's 51 & Media in general.

The 50 touchdown record isn't impressive anymore because 8/10 top passing touchdown seasons by a quarterback were done by quarterbacks playing in the league today.

All credit to Manning. I'm sorry to see that record go, but a quarterback doesn't really need to throw 50+ touchdowns to have an outstanding year. Would everyone be wow'd if a quarterback were to throw 70 touchdowns in the next 10 years? Maybe, but they certainly wouldn't proclaim it the best season performance by a quarterback ever. Anyone who understands the game knows that you need special circumstances to have a year like that. You need an offense that is heavily one-dimensional, and that's not really what teams strive for.
