Anyone else think the pats should explore moving to a zone blocking scheme ? Maroney seems to built for that kinda of a running scheme .
    thoughts ?

    I think it's worth exploring.

One thing I noticed watching SB 36 last week was how often the Pats pitched the ball to Smith or Faulk. I wouldn't mind them trying that out with the zone blocking.

    It would allow:

    1. Maroney to get to the outside much quicker.
    2. I believe it would keep his feet moving which is an issue when the defense gets quick penetration, he gets flat footed.
    3. It would allow our TEs and smaller, quicker lineman the chance to take good angles, establish leverage and move defenders out of the way.
    4. It should give a quick back like Maroney great cut back lanes.

    From Reiss's interview with BB:

""Sometimes on first and second down we lost yardage, and when you set up a long-yardage situation in the running game, you never want that to happen. It's one thing if you're sacked and it's second and 14, but when you hand off and it's second and 12, you can't let that happen."

Because of that, it would not be a surprise if the Patriots take a hard look at their scheme this offseason and consider alterations."

I agree with Mike Reiss.....with BB saying what he has..change is sure to follow.

i think that is a pretty good ideal to go after. i watched americas game aboutt he 98 broncos last night and TD tore up that season with over 2000 yards.

maroney just needs to get the train moving and get the legs going, find the hole and go full blast.

That's not how the Zone scheme works, though.

I have wondered about this a little but from a different perspective. My question was why was the running game so inconsistent?

    - was it the O Line?
    - the RBs dancing around too much?
    - WR or TE blocking?
    - scheme?
    - predictability? 1st down runs, etc.
    - other?

Good running teams seem to be able to be get 2-3 yards on first down, this is critical. 2 and 7 , turns into 3 & 4 which is really managable. As BB said when it is 2 and 12 you cannot depend on the run..

the only theory i can think of is two different running backs: dillon and maroney. they don't fit one blocking style.

Bottom line is that it did not appear that Maroney was used as effectively as he could have been; I like the idea.

    NEM, please read this:

    ---

Do you hear BB saying, "you can't let that happen".

BB's calling the shots here. All of the offensive position coaches will be pulled aside to coordinate ways to open up the running lanes for Maroney. BB will want the field stretched wide and deep. Dante will be up first to design specific blocking schemes tailored to Maroney's strengths. Because one of his strengths is explosion through the hole -- no, he won't be running wide all that often. Yes, a change is guaranteed...

Common frickin sense? Common frickin sense also says one day Maroney will be the No. 1 back at which time he'll be called on to run between the tackles. To be a complete back, he has to be at least competent in this regard. Otherwise, as you would have him, he's just another over priced scat back.

no one was hijacking the thread chief, you are just trying to pick on an "easy" target.

I can't stand it when people like Digger and yourself do that.
If you are going to rip him at least do it for something he did wrong.

Oh wait, you were just wanting more attention again right?
damn, i just gave it to you....
