Is anyone else looking at this Super Bowl and saying "blah...."?

I mean, I get it, I'm supposed to look at the Steelers and see red. I'm supposed to yap about Ben being a Rapist. I'm supposed to not want an AFC team to win it all. I'm supposed to worry that if the Steelers win a third SB in so few years, it will diminish the Pats in some way. Same regarding Ben and Tom. And I'm supposed to say that Aaron Rodgers is likable. And that GB is a cool small town and good for them.

BUT, I'm having trouble with all of that because:

    1. The Packers put a suckass into my winter in 1996-7. Yeah, they were the better team but the Pats were in that damn game until Troy Brown's replacement wasn't in the right place on the run back. Thanks Tuna, by the way.

    2. Seeing GB QB Brett Fahve running around without his helmet is seared into my cranium and will be forever.

    3. GB fans rubbed my nose in that doo doo for a long time.

    4. Aaron Rodgers is good and all but, to tell you the truth, I don't actually LIKE any players not on the Pats.

    5. The Steelers...I know I should hate them but they just beat the Jets. I just got done rooting for them with all of my fiber. I am grateful to them for putting the Jets down.

    6. Make no mistake, I can't root FOR them but getting the hate up after I was so happy with them on Sunday night isn't so easy.

    7. And there's the fact that they really have never beaten the Pats in a big game...other than the Bledsoe/Vrabel game, but that was many moons ago. It's hard for me to get the hate juices going when a team has been the Pats' biyatch for a very long time. This isn't the 2006 AFC Champion Colts here, is it?

    8. The Ben as Rapist angle doesn't move me. Sorry. Why? Because I assume that there are a tremendous amount of really good and really bad guys on both teams. We know about Ben. Bad man. But how about the many guys we don't know about? There are MANY players whose dirty secrets never come out or whose come out years later. My point is that choosing to root against a team because one or two guys are confirmed evil doers ignores that the Evil Quotient very well might favor the Steelers if we knew all the facts.

    9. In the end, I don't have a team that I HATE HATE HATE or that I like much at all.

Now make no mistake, dear Pats fans, I don't wish the Jets were in it. Far from it. But I did really enjoy that game Sunday night because I love having a rooting interest.

There will be only a little rooting interest for me on Feb 6 as I sorta root for the Packers. Just sort of.

Even a bet wont create the sort of passion I had going on Sunday night as I rooted against the Jets like my life was dependent upon it.

    Super Bowl Sunday.....BLAH.

Are others looking at this game similarly?

First and foremost, I'm glad the Jets lost. But that's as far as I'll go before I thank the Steelers for anything. I think it's easy to root against them for several facts. Their fans are obnoxious and arrogant and deserve to be humbled. Rothliesberger is a grade A douchebag and the thought of him winning a third SB makes me nauseous. As far as GB goes, I have no ill feelings from that SB and to see Aaron Rodgers to win and knock Favre's Legacy off the mantle there is worth it. It would be the ultimate and final slap on Favre if it goes down like this. Besides, it's a lot funner to watch when you actually favor a team to win. Go Packers.

The Steelers have 6 SB titles and the Pats have 3....that's already double what we have. If they get a 7th catching them gets that much harder.

Yeah, I get it, root for the Packers. For a lot of reasons.

    But with a passion?

Who among Pats Fandom could generate a passionate rooting interest in this game?

I was rooting against the Jets on Sunday night like a raging lunatic. I doubt I was alone in that. And I doubt that many Pats fans who will be rooting for the Packers on Feb 6 will have even half the amount of passion they had on Sunday night.

That's my lament. I'm a passion junkie. Not having any of that going when the Packets play the Steelers is a big bad bummer for me.

And one last thing: I've got no problem with Steelers fans. Most of the ones that I know are pretty cool fans.

It'll be interesting to see if Goodell's goons give the refs a nod of the head to prevent the sex abuser from winning another Super Bowl ring.

No, no, no. I won't root for anyone but the Pats unless it's to help the Pats (e.g. Jets in week 17 08'). I only root against teams....in this case Pitt.

You are right. Better stated. Root against Pitt.

    But with a passion?

    I don't care who wins...but it'll be a good game.
I am expecting a shoot-out - I think these teams can grind it out...but I can completely see Rodgers lighting up the scoreboard with Ben trying to keep up.
It can't be worse than Steelers-AZ...and that was a pretty awesome game.

    #87 Jersey

I would say blah to a Chicago-Pitt game (figuring Cutler would break the INT record in a blowout loss), but I can back Green Bay against the Steelers. Other than the fact they beat the Pats in '96 at a time when the NFC always won, there is nothing really to dislike about them.

Plus, if Big Ben loses he can no longer claim to be "Captain Clutch" with an undefeated Super Bowl record. That is far less satisfying than watching Manning lose last year, but still quite appealing.

    Bitter?

Not in the least. I don't like or hate either team.

What I want is a rooting interest. That...I don't have.

I was bitter on Sunday night when the stinking Jets were in a game that the Pats should have been in, and I was bitterly rooting against them and all of their vile, nasty fans. Now that was FUN.

Sure, you are right that this is a great game, but my blood doesn't really get flowing without a true rooting interest.

And these are two teams that I don't love or hate. Blah.

it's either going to be alot like the steelers/zona superbowl

or both qbs are going to get killed by passrushes and it will be a defensive battle

in my opinion, you shouldn't ever have the same kind of passion for a game that doesn't have your team in it

but this is fn football man, and it's the last game you're going to see before at least august, and the last real game till sept.

if you're just a pats fan, that's cool, but for me, i'm a chargers fan who fn loves the sport secondly

but as for the whole talk of passion, IMO you can't cheer for any other game with the same passion, if your team isn't in it, cause that would make a person a bandwagonner

    Sorry, but that's ridiculous.

You can't root with passion against a team you HATE?

I assure you that I am no bandwagoner. I am not a Steelers fan. Not in the least.

But I rooted with PASSION against the Jets on Sunday night and I enjoyed the crp out of the experience.

Yes, of course, I am a football fan and will appreciate the game on Feb 6. Two great teams. Two top 5 QBs. Tradition. Good stuff.

But no passion, and despite your proclamations, I can root with passion when teams I hate like the Jets, Yankees, Dolphins and Colts are involved. And when that utter wussy LDT was on the Chargers, you could add them to the list.

Thanks for coming on a NE Patriots' message board and enlightening me with the wisdom you have gained as part of that great fraternal order of fair-weather fandom found in San Diego. Seriously, I can understand how people that have a reason to loathe NE because their team lost to us at some point would feel this way, but your wrong. Pittsburgh and Dallas fans are the most obnoxious and annoying fans in football. It's always been that way because of all the winning they've experienced and feel entitled too. But that would be hard for you San Diego'ers to understand.

I always tend to root for teams that play well outside in the winter weather. It is one of the things I love about the Patriots. To me, that is the epitome of football and Green Bay has that at its core. They may not be my first choice team, but I'll still tip my hat to them for playing what I consider to be "real football".

I'm mildly interested in a GB win mostly because of that squish-nosed sex offender Steeler quarterback; but I really don't have a rooting interest in this SB, unlike last year when it was almost as good as a Patriots win when The Saints beat the Colts.
