Will it take 2 weeks, maybe 3...maybe a month?,Longer?.....the season is young but can get scary if they don't come together before too long.
New base defense, haven't had the same personnel on the field, including Haynesworth Wright and Pryor.
Worry about the defense learning where to lineup at this point, sacks will come when the defense gels.
Umm...they're running a vanilla defense, from a standard 1-gap 4-3 formation that most of these guys have played within since high school. We're not talking about the crazy schemes from the days of 03 and 04. You've heard it from their own mouths..."my job is just to kill the QB" and stuff like that.
I just don't but the argument that they need time to gel, unless you're saying they're applying something slippery to their jerseys right before kickoff...
Defensive players play much, much better when they've played together for a while. It isn't rocket surgery.
Pass rushers don't need chemistry to beat their man one-on-one or run basic stunts.
That's not "rocket surgery", either.
It helps to be one on one, though. Kind of depends on what's going on elsewhere.
The patriots in their best pass rushing days rarely got sacks from beating guys one on one, McGinest, once in a while.
Still much more concerned with the safeties, though from what i've seen they could blitz them every play and not give up much, since they don't know what they're doing anyway.
Do they keep stats for "Almost Sacks" ?

After 3 games last year, the Pats were 2-1 and the defense was a disaster coming off consecutive shreddings by Mark Sanchez and Ryan Fitzpatrick.
They made some changes, some guys stepped up, and they progressed to the point where they were a pretty decent unit. It was an extrememly flawed defense but one that was good enough to support the Pats elite offense. It was not good enough to win games if someone shut down the offense either by out playing them or out scheming them.
I can see that development happening again which given this year's offense - more explosive but also not likely to have the historic low turnover level of last years- should be more than good enough to win a lot of games, make the playoffs, and compete for the division and HFA. Then the hope is Tom Brady and the offense roll off 3-4 great performances in a row in January/February.
If we are expecting to see this defense gel into more than that, I certainly hope it does but don't think it is very likely. There are a lot of holes personnel wise.
According to stats from Comcast, through the first 3 games last year, the defense who was ranked low in 2010 was allowing something like 380 YPG and 19.8 points allowed...this year it is 468 YPG and 26 points allowed......that's alarming, especially considering Bill made moves to improve that, not make it worse.

Much in the same way that when I walk from my bedroom to my bathroom I've almost walked to Cambodia.
