Earlier on Sunday as a warmup for the professional football game in the evening, the Jets (4-4) will be playing the Jags (4-4). Normally it's a de facto no brainer to root for yet another humiliating Jets defeat, but here despite the threat the Jets present to the AFCE crown I'm pulling for them to beat the Jags so our #2 pick from the Jags in 2010 is more valuable. Pats beating the Jets in our home game would leave the Hackensack team with a minimum of 5 losses. If we can't do that and finish with less losses than the Jets, well then the 2010 Patriots edition truly sucks and post season play would be futile.

Besides, the Jets have a HUGE advantage Sunday. Their Fat HC cheerleader has called upon the fans (q.v. Fireperson Edward) to make the difference!

I like the idea, as hard as it would be to root for the rats if we get a better pick so be it. Also its time for the Fat Man to step up and makes some plays instead of alwasy calling on the fans.

I'm rooting for the Jags, I have to, if the jest beat us again we're in a fight for the division. If we had the Jags' #1 then I might cover my head in a grocery bad and root for the jest. A move of a few spots in the second round isn't worth it to me. However it's a nice little side benefit assuming the jest do win.

As Patton once said, this war can still be lost. We could be playing for the division lead when we play the jets.

Right, the Pats have a good young core, and if they feel they want someone at 2.5 and only have 2.10. they can throw a 4th round pick or something to move up.

At this point, theres not really enough roster spots to sign a whole ton of low picks.

And keeping in mind we have an LB on the shelf who will essentially be a rookie pick next year (Tyrone McKenzie).

We might end up taking 5 guys in the 2nd round next year, or two in the first. Hard to say, but this roster is looking real good for the next few years even before another draft (which could be loaded with guys leaving college early).

Of course we could. And if we can't beat the Jets at home in Foxboro it simply means that this 2009 Patriots team is not a very good team. A team that can't beat the Colts AND can't beat the Jets in any game is NOT going to kick ass post season, should they somehow get there despite the losses.

At that moment in time, I agree with you but there would be 6 or so regular season games left and that's a lifetime in terms of how a team is playing, either for the better or the worse.

Simple solution....root for a tie. A tie is as good as a loss if there are no other ties, Ty.

Agreed. I can't bring myself to root for the Green Beans in this case. It's too much fun watching Tubby Wrecks and that Fireman Ed psycho taste defeat. Jacksonville will end with a mediocre record no matter what. And besides, our second-round picks are crapshoots anyway.

Even if we lose both (I expect us to beat the jets), we'd likely have a shot at revenge in the playoffs. And no, I do NOT believe that losing to colts and the jets mid-season would tell us much about how we would perform in the playoffs. The defense gets better every week and we will be getting a few offensive players back by playoff time.

And BTW, I think that the bettors have us as an equal quality team to the colts, setting us as an underdog less or equal to the value of home field advantage.

The Jags aren't likely to make the playoffs, which ensures a pick higher than #52. Anything more than that is gravy.

Besides, a thoroughly demoralized JEST team >> two extra spots in the second round.

    Agreed with this here.

I'll root for the Titans to suck it up so that pick is as close to the first round as possible.

Sorry, no can do. 2001 says hi, remember me? Two of the last 4 SB champs came by their rings out of the wild card slot because they didn't do enough to deserve their divisions title for whatever reason. But in the second season they got their collective **** together and rolled. Last year in the playoffs the team with the best record in football who led wire to wire and dominated opposition, lost in the first round. Kinda like what happened to the most dominant team we've ever fielded back in 2007.

The jags pick is already value added. They won't win 8 games, but one of them might as well be against the AFCE team closest to us in the standings since **** happens all the time that we cannot control like bad calls, flu bugs, gutwrenching or lingering injuries... Doesn't mean they would't rebound to kick ass in the second season. I root for them to have the very best opportunity possible to by any means available, including suckitude of the JETS, 'Fins and even the Jills.

I never root for draft position. If the Jags win, the Jets have lost 5 out of 6 and are just about out of contention for the division if the Pats beat Indy.

It does make next week a must win for them, but the way Rexy is running the team it could be the straw that breaks the camel's back. Ryan actually gave the Jets six straight days off during the bye eventhough they have lost four of their last five. Belichick would never give that much time off, but definitely not with the team struggling and almost on the brink of writing off the season with a couple more loses.

Every Jety loss means the Jets pick lower in the draft. All that being said,

I said will root for anybody playing the Jets; even Miami.

This isn't 2001 redux. Were the Pats to lose to BOTH the Colts and the Jets as I'd said, that's prima facie evidence that the 2009 squad really isn't very good.

With a Jets win Sunday we get a 3 fer...
    1) Our Jags #2 pick in 2010 becomes better. BB needs all the help he can get on 2s.
    2) All Jets picks in 2010 become later. Remember, Gholston aside, the Jets have drafted well and have a core of good young players. Don't want them to get a young Jenkins replacement.
    3) Jets fans get their AFCE Divisional Title hopes up again, only to have them stomped into the Foxboro turf the very next week. Life is good. Jets crushed. I can hear the lamantations of their fans now.

All the more reason to hope that they have a truly terrible season that precipitates another regime change.

I just can't do it, fellas... sorry about that. I tried rooting for them last year against Miami, and they let us down. I'll never root for the Jets again, no matter what it might cost us.

The is a word that describes wanting your divisional rival to win and have a chance at the division so that you can beat them and take the division. That word is "arrogance".

Personally, I don't focus future draft choices or the chance to embarrass oppenents. As our coachses have taught us, there are only two goals at this point in the season: win this game and win the division.

If you think that we should WANT the jets to have a chance at the division, I suggest that you watch the last jets game six times. I expect us to win, but I would rather the jets have as many losses as possible, as soon as possible. To want the jets to win as many as possible so that they get a poorer draft choice is just plain stupid. The only fans that should want that are jets fans.
