Patriots signed Tom Brady to a two-year extension through 2019

I'm not sure how I feel about this one......we should be investing in the future, not holding onto the past

This is THE team and THE coach where sentimentality does not play into any football decision. Clearly they are aware that Tom is not "the past" just yet and they would be correct.

I want to see the terms before I pass any judgement either way for this move.

Bittersweet. Brady will pass all of Manning's lame regular season records in a Patriots uniform (also 20 seasons with one team is awesome) but IMO Jimmy G has franchise QB caliber traits that will be hard to find in other 2nd-3rd round QBs in the upcoming years. He was a rare case as a talented FCS QB that was available in the late 2nd round.

Just hope the team has some plan for the Brady successor.

For now, trade Jimmy G to the highest bidder and draft Hogan in rds 3-5.

Brady is still the best quarterback in the NFL. If given time, he'll still pick apart even elite defenses and almost led the Pats to a road victory against maybe the second best defense of the last eight years even though he was getting hit constantly within one second of getting the ball. And that was with no running game, to boot. He IS getting up there, though, so I hope this deal is structured in such a way that the Pats can get out of it if he begins to decline. That said, he said he'll play until he sucks. I expect Brady will know that and will retire in favor of making his last couple of seasons the absolute joke that Manning's was. But yes, very bittersweet. This is the last contract extension we're going to see of the GOAT. He will be missed when he hangs them up.

I truly believe that if Brady had an o-line last year not only would he have been good for an additional year in the future, they would have been raising another banner this September.

Protect the franchise. I love Montana but look at what Brady has done in the salary cap era, I mean its not even a discussion. Give Montana Brady's line and he struggles mightily. Brady is the best. He is loyal to your region and our fan base. He is rock solid in the community and let's be honest, he is playing at a crazy high level. He deserves it based on merit and his work ethic ain't changing anytime soon.

With 12 under center, we have a great shot at January football, and we still do for the next couple of years...

He is probably mindfully throwing down a spirula shake and watching film on our week one opponent. The man is obsessed...

The greatest player of all time, who has lead us to AFCCGs like 70% of the time and SBs about 40% of the time, who overcame tons of injuries and a **** offensive line to get us in position to get to another SB last year, signs what will doubtlessly be a team-friendly deal to help our cap situation and keep him in a Pats uni for 20 years and....people say this is bittersweet?

Goddamn I hate you all.

Reiss says that the deal isn't signed yet.

IMO Brady waits to sign it until after Peyton retires as a little salt in the wound. A little extra taint in the teabagging, if you will.

Awesome. More Brady is good. Less Brady is bad.

Not a lot of grey area here. People concerned about this, not sure what team you root for, but it ain't the flippin Patriots.

I love this, but with that being said I think it would be the right move to go "all in" in these last two years. Brady is 39 and is in the twilight of his career, and while he's still playing like the best QB in the league surround him with talent so we can go to the Super Bowl for both of these years. Garropolo is literally an unknown and it could be years before we get ourselves an elite QB after Brady.

Get Brady proper protection, get a good RB to complement him and Lewis, grab another WR, lock up Hightower, Collins, Butler and maybe Jones, use the rest of the cap space to grab whatever elite player we can.

If anything I think we'll keep Jimmy this year and use him to trade up in the first next year when there'll be more blue chip prospects and we'll actually have a 1st round pick.

Given the reactions of some posters here, I am almost certain that I will not be on patsfans.co after Brady retires.

I mean, do you guys watch other QBs play the position?

The level of QB play in New England is going to drop off dramatically, both right before Brady retires, and for sure after.

Sic Transit Garapollo Era
Maybe. But, I don't see them moving him until the three judges in New York issue their ruling on the NFL's appeal and there's a reasonable chance that it could take them as long as six months to get around to ruling.

OK. They could move him and pick up a veteran backup...but who exactly would that be? McNabb? Sanchez? :eek:Manning  :eek:. You get the idea...that just ain't gonna happen.

Wouldn't be surprised to see the team draft a QB this year to develop behind the guys with the hope that he can be a quality backup by next season, and with the intention to then trade Jimmy G next year.

Alternatively, they could trade Jimmy this year and sign Hoyer or something, but I don't think that'll happen.

On the flip side, I don't think anyone has ever taken staying a starting QB as seriously as Brady has, and the previous generation of QBs didn't have modern sports medicine to help them.
Manning wanted it so bad he threw his wife under the bus.
