I think the idea of a move TE appeals to McDaniels. Chandler is an almost 4.9 40, or about as fast as Nate Solder. If you are an "H" back you need to have some speed to get open. Fleener's ten yard split was actually faster than Hernandez and he is 6'6" and 251lbs. With 4.51 speed he is a threat.
Picture this formation. Gronk and Fleener light up tight and split out in motion presnap. Now Wade Phillips, what do you do?
Actually the best think they can do to get some elbow room for Gronk so that he is not triple teamed (see playoffs) is Fleener.
I think Allen gives you no more than Chandler in skill set or production.
I will go one better. Cousins on this forum hate this move but add Mike Wallace to Gronk and Fleener. He is a CAP cut in Minn. With Tannehill in two years he caught 140 passes and had 15TDs. That is with the very inconstant Tannehill on a losing Team! The Vikings staff say he has been a good soldier but they are a run first and noodle armed QB Team. He is only 29. I would take him over any WR we can get at #60 in the Draft that will take a few years to develop.
Picture Fleener and Gronk tight with Wallace split wide and JE in the slot. Now in the backfield you have Lewis and maybe Forte. Lewis had 36 catches in 7 games. Forte is capable of even more. The problem for the offense was that when Blount or even Bolden came in, the defense relaxed on running back in the pattern.
Now you have to build the O Line and consider a few FA there.
Fleener changes the dynamic of the Offense. Hey we can't get them all but it is a nice thought.
