Maybe re-signing McCourty improves the chances of Revis staying.
Tagging him would've meant a full 9.5 mil cap # this year for 1 year, vs. this deal likely being structured to have a lower first year cap #. Lower first year important for keeping Revis due to being tight to the cap.I was wrong but you can't go wrong with Bill calling he shots. A bit confused with the numbers though. Why didn't they just tag him if they felt he was worth that much?
"In BB I Trust" thank you and good night.
Well they could have tagged him and signed him to the extension subsequently (to the same deal, meaning the same cap hit). I do think letting him hit free agency and see what else is out there did create some good will that allowed this deal to happen.Tagging him would've meant a full 9.5 mil cap # this year for 1 year, vs. this deal likely being structured to have a lower first year cap #. I feel for the Jags, they deserve something good to come their way, just not Revis or DMacGlad McCourty is staying. Hope Revis does the same
...So I decided, for the heck of it, to look at what Giants fans, Eagles fans, and Jaguar fans were saying on their message boards. Giants fans are disappointed but are relieved Philadelphia won't get him now. Eagles fans weren't surprised. Jaguar fans say they didn't really have a chance.
For some reason, the Patriots, despite proving historically so, pay top of the market for worthy players. Still, this appears surprising to many.Huh? Devin is one of the very best safeties in the league. It means something to retain him, regardless of what happens with Revis.

You know, I see a lot of people saying this, and I get it: McCourty is one of the best safeties in today's game. Revis is one of the best CBs of all time and a HoFer. A difference. But...McCourty as much as i love him is no way near as important as Revis. That guy elevated our whole damn defense he's that good. DMac's game would suffer big time without Revis there so that's why i'm confident he's close to agreeing, probably just his agent hashing out bonuses with the Pats.
I could see that. Then in year 4 they restructure and extend the deal to spread the money out.I suspect that the first 3 years (signing bonus plus 2 years of salary) will total the guaranteed $24.5M. Personally, I think that this is a better deal for the patriots that a one year $9.5M deal. And, yes, I expect that McCourty will play her for even longer than that. Under the above structure, the last 2 years would be $10M and $13M.
Oh don't get it wrong i love DMac, think he's easily one of the best safeties in the game but i'm just stating the disparity between the two. DMac is great, Revis is LEGENDARY. We're talking about a corner that will be mentioned with Deion when he retires.....You know, I see a lot of people saying this, and I get it: McCourty is one of the best safeties in today's game. Just remember, before Talib showed up in 2012, Devin McCourty was pretty much the only good thing in that secondary. It's easy to forget how important his presence is in, say, allowing man coverage to work; he's clearly someone you would sure as hell notice if he was gone and Harmon/Ryan were in his stead. He also has quietly improved his man game when it's called for, as this year showed. In other words: is he as 'good' a player as Revis, in a vacuum? No. But would the team sure as hell suffer in ways you aren't fathoming if he wasn't there? Yes.
Kudos to the Pats for shelling out for him, he deserved it.
