Getting rid of Mankins = biggest mistake

Mankins is arguably the best pull-guard in the league not to mention the heart and soul of our O-line (which is underrated to be honest) for many years. He was the tough guy.

Trading him was as stupid as it it was insulting (to him). The O-line wouldn't be light years better, but it certainly would be better. It is also obvious that there was no contingent plan as the o-line is being shuffled seemingly all game long.

Trading mankins was an enormous mistake.

But they got good value in the trade and saved cap space, so they have that going for them.

And when run plays are called they go to Vereen who isn't a very good runner and always goes down from the first tackler if he can't outrun them.

I don't know if it was just me or not, but does Vereen seem to have some Laurence Maroney dancing shoes on?

Just hit the hole and go, man!

It's the play design, and it's God awful and absolutely counter productive when our offensive line is getting pushed around. That's on Josh.

I know some have lobbied for Richie Incognito as a potential replacement at guard, but I couldn't possibly imagine Belichick going that route.

Other than a minor off the grid type of trade, I can't see him making too many moves. It may seem like an act of desperation to some, and Belichick isn't going to appear as if he's straying from the main plan in my opinion.

For the record, I can't remember if it was Football Outsiders or PFF, by they graded Incognito as a "plus" in six of his eight games played last year. Then again, he also gave up 6 sacks, so it's kind of a mixed bag.

There's two reasons why I would like Incognito brought in:
  1. Improved OL toughness and perceived attitude, &
  2. Most of the rookies aren't ready.

Agreed. I really don't know how anyone could be against it at this point.
That said, I know it won't happen.

No. When Vereen doesn't break tackles, and sometimes try and avoid them then it's on him.

It has been said it is better to get rid of a player a year early rather than a year late... he could have renegotiated.

The Wes Welker myth is perpetuated again, the Pats offered him more money at least twice and he rejected both offers as his agent told him he was worth more, but he was not. The Welker "failure" was not on the Pats, but on his agent.

In case no one noticed every team makes mistakes on their personnel... the Pats have made a few, but if you compared every teams hits and misses I suspect it would be close, and the Pats would be above the norm.

My understanding re: Mankins the Pats asked him to redo his contract and he said no and also he didn't like the new OL coach so he asked to leave. The timing of the release was very bad and no qualified replacement has hurt the OL. BTW I read that the OL in general don't like the new OL coach.

Of course you can !!! Just block the guy in front of you and take him out of play.
Go watch some Pats wins from last season, see how many 3rd downs were converted by RUNNING the ball.

The exactly the same offense, with exactly the same people, went from one of the best to one of the worst. The only missing link? Mankins.

"The exactly the same offense, with exactly the same people...." the "only missing link" is Mankins??????

Hello?

LAGARETTE BLOUNT.

Now THAT was the worst move of the offseason.

Blount, 27 yrs old, trending up, could have resigned him for 2 yrs $4million

Mankins, 32 years old, clearly fading, wasn't budging from his bloated contract.

The Pats made the right call on Mankins. The Pats screwed up BIG TIME on Blount.

What the hell happened from halftime of the Miami game on? During the first half of the opener, they threw at will, and put up 20 pts. Things looked just fine, and it seemed to be pointing towards another optimistic season.

Since then, the offense has completely sucked in every possible way. It seems weird to me.
Everyone thought the first half was the real Patriots and the second half wilting was the outlier due to the heat, remember? Turns out the first half was the outlier.

Mankins was traded at halftime of the Miami game...the Patriots, being as cheap as they are, wanted to wait until they were in Florida so they could put him on a bus up to Tampa rather than pay his airfare from Providence. They did it at halftime so they wouldn't have to feed him after the game.

LOL Blount went NOWHERE when he didn't had holes to ran through. It was mainly Mankins who created those holes. LOL at Blount, and LOL at Mankins fading.

The Broncos showed the league how to stop Blount. I suspect he's still be here if he had a good game last January in Denver.

Miami made adjustments at the half.

Funny you say that, heard Zolak speak about this the the other day.. he claims that half time adjustments are a myth as it takes about 2 minutes to get everyone back from the field and then about 2 to get back to the field, then there are those how have to use the bathroom, make uniform adjustments or pick up some nourishment.. then the coaches have to make decisions... in reality there is not a lot of time for 1/2 time adjustments..

Blount was the most easily stopped "powerback" when the D managed to not allow any hole for him to ran through. He could not gain any tough yards. He could not fall forward to save his life.
I'll give him this though, when the hole was there, he hit it hard, and away he was, running like a man possessed.
But to claim that he was more important than Mankins, that's a huge LOL.

Then how did the Patriots use all that ill-gotten tape all those years at the half to make all of the necessary adjustments to cheat their way to all of their wins? Zolak is lyin' and Mark Schlereth is truthin'...

Getting rid of Mankins certainly didn't help no matter how some people here tried to spin it.

This OL right now needs toughness and leadership.

Establish the run.

The Pats can eek out at least 3.3 ypc. Today, Ridley is averaging 3.6 ypc and Vereen 4.4 ypc. Its a myth that NE cant run the ball. They WONT run the ball in the "Ground Hog day" offense.

If the Pats do not make a serious effort to establish the running game vs Cincinnati they will lose.
