Logan Mankins Traded

TO be honest, I think it is going to be hard for most players to have "crazy stats" on this team this year barring injuries. Our "remaking" of BRadys receiving corp seems to at least initially be reaping benefits this year where I am not sure other than Gronkowski could go 1000yards plus.

we have:
Gronkowski
Edelman
Vereen
Amendola
Thompkins
Dobson
Lafell
Wright

I haven't scanned all 1000+ posts in this thread, but have people compared this trade to 2003 Malloy at all? I believe he was a captain (and a team leader) at the time. Granted we picked up Rodney Harrison, but it seems like an obvious comparison.

Hopefully week 1 goes better this time around...

heh. Just saw a chat with Tedy Bruschi where he said it wouldn't surprise him if Wright caught 70 balls.

I could see this happening. After Edelman, Wright may well be the best receiver on this team.

Gronkowski, vereen, amendola, dobson, thompkins? there is no shortage of receiving targets on this team.

In other words, you don't really have no other reason other than, "hey he's a Pat, how dare he get's criticised".

Man up, type a few bullet points we can concretely go back to when the season is over, and predict a hard number. I did it. It takes a minute since you already have a theory. Don't be a coward.

Stop embarrassing yourself.

I have given plenty of points not only to give my reasons why I think he could improve this team, but reasons to counter your points:

  • The guy had a top five of ALL TIME rookie seasons for a TE. And most players have a second year jump in production. He could potentially have a second year jump like Hernandez had.
  • Belichick is a subscriber to the Perkins-Ehrhardt system of offense which is a two TE set offense that utilizes both TEs quite a bit.
  • Belichick is reported to be high on Wright. Word is he has been trying to get him for a few weeks. Schiano was just in camp a few weeks ago and probably talked in Belichick's ear to trade for him.
  • Danny Woodhead came in the second week of the season and had over 900 all purpose yards (with 34 receptions as a RB) and six TDs. This shows a player can be plugged in late in the process and contribute right away on offense.
  • The Patriots plugged Wright into the offense last night in his second day on the Pats and made him a focal point of the offense including making him the designed target of the first passing play.
  • I disagree that receivers have to earn Brady's trust to get him to throw you the ball. I showed the opposite. You can lose his trust and never get it back (see Ochocinco, Zach Sudfeld, Donald Hayes, Doug Gabriel), but these players were getting a lot of targets early in the season and just lost Brady's trust.
  • Everyone on the team who has spoken about him is praising Wright for how fast he picked up the offense last night. If he can learn a lot in two days, how much will he know in two weeks.
Is that enough bullet points for you?

Ok! Ok! I have been outed. Yes, I am Tedy Bruschi.

BTW, here is the Bruschi chat transcript on Wright:

Dorian (Maryland) [via mobile]

Another season about to kick off! Main concern I have is do you think Tommy has enough weapons to utilize to get back to the Super Bowl and most importantly win? The defense seems like it's been in the best position it's been since 2005 to be impactful and take over games. Thanks tedy!

I do think Tom Brady has enough weapons. I think they'll still be productive at the beginning of the year, even if Rob Gronkowski doesn't play. Watch out for Tim Wright. It's entirely possible that he can catch 70 balls, especially if there is no Gronkowski for the first couple of games. Wright has good hands and works hard to get open. If you're looking for a fantasy sleeper pick, he may be your guy.

I wouldn't go that far, but I think he is a talented young receiver and will have a lot of favorable mismatches do to the fact that he is a bad match up for a lot of LBers and other players will be drawing a lot more attention from opposing offenses.

Total catches?

As I stated, as it stands, right now, Wright is probably a better player at his position (a position we did not have filled) than Mankins is at is.

But how can you ever measure these trades anyway. If the team is healthy at Tim gets some Grabs was it a great trade if they win the SB? They could win it all without either player? How will you ever be able to measure this since nothing is solely dependent on either of the two players.

TW can grab 80 balls and The LG might play great and they could miss the playoffs.

Total catches?

I gave you a range. BTW, Bruschi agrees with me.

I am sorry, but I am not going to just throw a number out there to appease you. If you really want a number, I will give you the minimum of my range of 40 just to make you happy.

Dude, this is a fan forum. Your lively hood doesn't depend on whether you're right or wrong here. Don't be scared to be wrong and go with the the minimum of your range. Show a little conviction.

I don't play these games. I don't really know how much. I can see them make him a big part of the offense right away to take a month or so. I am not like you and can make definitive proclamations without seeing things playing out a bit.

He had the 3rd best rookie season for a TE all time.
Kind of missleading as he played as a receiver the majority of his snaps.

True, but then we would have to asterisk Jimmy Graham's production.
On the other hand look who the QB was.

But the bottom line is this guy is baller who knows where to be and has solid hands. Not a lot of downside.

Not really. He was a move TE who lined up in the slot. If we discount any TE who lines up in the slot as not a TE, you can say that guys like Jimmy Graham, Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, and others cannot be considered true TEs (although Graham wants to be considered a WR anyway).

Wow! It took me a few days to get through all of this thread, but by gosh I did it.

Some thoughts:

-- I'm sure that BB has a plan to replace Mankins, but that doesn't mean that I have to like it. And it doesn't matter how much justification comes from Belichick's Elves.

-- Logan Mankins was as tough as they get in a business filled with toughness. He was a great teammate and by all accounts a fine gentleman to all the fans who came in contact with him.

-- Big Vince would have been in Logan's shoes but his injury took away his leverage.

-- Since Mankins' strength was run-blocking, it's too bad we went pass-happy in the last two SB losses. Things might have been different if we ran the damn ball more.

-- We all hear about players taking one for the team, but why don't we ever hear about management taking one for the team too?

-- The NFL might be the only place where living up to a signed agreement is looked down upon. If you do it for the Pats you're asking to be traded unless it's a signed agreement that they like.

-- It's funny how Kraft manages to stay clear of any responsibility for losing good team players like Mankins, and for keeping scum like Hernandez.

-- Is it some sort of crime to go over the salary cap?

-- Moves like this one make it harder to be a fan of this team.

What a **** post. But considering you disagreed with me bringing up some very silly points made in a ridiculous article recently written about the Patriots and how its all "spare parts" and "losing when it counts", I should expect this from you.

Your last sentence. I like that!!! In fact why don't you go root for another team? We wont miss you.

By crime, do you mean besides the whole thing of not being allowed to exceed it for any reason? It's a hard cap. This isn't the NBA. Felger seems to make that mistake a lot too.

So moves designed to make the team better make it harder to be a fan?
