I know this is an esoteric question, but it has been bothering me for several years and it's a slow Saturday.

Does anyone know the name or anything about the Patriots on-field security guy who looks like a younger Don Rickles and shadows Belichick after the games during handshakes, etc. There must be some epic stories of him clearing house out there from time to time.

If this is the guy you are referring to Smessy

(If you look you can see the camera man's triax cord goes taunt and is probably what really pulled him off his feet, not the bodyguard)

Chief Operating Officer of TeamOps Security (as of 2010 at least) Mark Briggs

NFL "looking into" incident between Pats security chief, NBC cameraman | ProFootballTalk

A native of Derby in the United Kingdom, Mark joined the Patriots organization at the end of the 2000 season following a successful two years working with the Sydney Olympic Organization. His responsibilities include all aspects of game day security and guest services, with the goal of giving visitors to Gillette Stadium a world-class experience.

After his schooling, Mark joined the British Army where he served 16 years, being awarded the British Empire Medal in HM Queen Elizabeth II 1987 Birthday Honors List. In 1990 he started his crowd management and security career at the famous Wembley Stadium complex in London, managing hundreds of events in the arena, conference center and stadium before leaving for Sydney, Australia in 1998.

Mark is presently studying for a Masters degree with Leicester University UK.

Yup, that's the guy! Not someone you'd want to cross :D

It's sort of a tradition in my house at the end of games to see who could be the first to spot him and that grim visage!

(And, yes, I agree, that cameraman fell, he wasn't "tossed" at all)

whaddya lookin' at you hockey puck...

I did a bit of Googling and Mark Briggs isn't just ex-British Army, he's ex-SAS - best in the world.

Jonathan Kraft disputes Rolling Stone article about Aaron Hernandez | Boston Herald

Quote from Jonathan Kraft last year:
We hired Mark in 2000. He joined us in January of ’01. And we were building Gillette, we knew we really needed to upgrade our security here. A gentleman who worked with us for over a decade as an outside consult, a guy named Mike Loin, just came back from the Sydney Olympics said, ‘I met a guy over there, Mark Briggs, British Special Forces, ran Wembley. He’s the right guy to run a venue in today’s world.’ 9/11 happened right after and we’re really thankful we had Mark. And Mark joined us right after the Sydney Olympics in the beginning of ’01.

"Special forces" does not mean SAS. SAS is a set of units within the Special operations forces. He wasn't part of the Special Forces either. Kraft mis-spoke since he probably got most of his military information from watching Rambo 1 through 1000.

Mark was part of the Coldstream Guards.

It's a common mistake by non-military people but he spent 16 years as one of those guys in the big tall black hats and red uniforms. It's more like a "special assignment" unit. They are the non-responsive guards that tourists think of when you say British guards.

We have them too. For instance, the Marines who guard the White House and flank the President are on special assignment. You have to have the right height, look, and temperament to be assigned. Every US branch has them. I had a friend who was a White House Marine. For the US, it's a temporary assignment. For the British, it can be a career.

Coincidentally, I checked Wikipedia and so on very recently about the Changing of the Guard, etc. To my surprise, it isn't ALWAYS the Coldstream Guards who guard Buckingham Palace; rather, the job is rotated among several regiments.

I believe it. Personally, I had to do formal funeral detail (dress blues - not the type at your normal funeral) l for about 3 months and it sucked. Everything has to be perfect and you do inspection after inspection and practice the "moves" until you go crazy and that wasn't even as formal as something like Arlington or the White House or any other country equivalent. That's all I did for 3 months. I would have several inspections a day and every movement I made had to be exact. You burn out quick. I'm not sure how you can stay in a unit that long but they do. It was a terrible experience. When I wasn't being inspected, I was ironing, polishing, or measuring placement like I was calculating the splitting of an atom lol
