No. 29: New England → Minnesota (D). New England traded this selection to Minnesota in exchange for Minnesota's 2013 second- (52nd), third- (83rd), fourth- (102nd), and seventh- (229th) round selections.

With #29, Minnesota selected WR/KR Cordarrelle Patterson... he had 9 TD's as a rookie and made the Pro Bowl as a kick returner. Was also selected as an All Pro KR. Had about 2,000 all purpose yards and added a dynamic element to the Vikings otherwise predictable offense. He's shown elite athletic ability... he just needs to work on his route running. He has the tools to be a Top 10 WR in the league. Something Brady could definitely use as he enters the final few years of his career.

The Patriots got Jamie Collins, Logan Ryan, Josh Boyce, and a one-year rental on LaGarette Blount.

Obviously it's too early to make any definitive statements yet. But from the looks of it, Collins and Logan Ryan will both be important pieces of our defense for the next few years.

Collins looks to have Pro Bowl potential. Collins alone might turn out to be better than Patterson. If the Pats really wanted to, they could've chose him with #29... so everything else they got with the trade is a bonus. He came on strong at the end of last season, but he was running on fresh legs while everyone else was tired after playing for the entire season. If he can maintain that level of play for an entire year, he will be an elite defender in the NFL. Looks like he will be a vital part of the defense as a swiss army knife and play maker. He reminds me of Troy Polamalu in the way he can cover, blitz, sniff out screens, and generally makes plays all over the field.

Logan Ryan led the team in INT's last year and looks like solid depth for the secondary. He would be starting this year if we didn't sign Revis and Browner.

I have high hopes for Boyce but he hasn't shown anything yet. I think he can be as good, if not better than Dobson. But on the other hand, he could be another Taylor Price. We really don't know yet.

Blount had a decent year last year. A few games in particular at the end of the season where he really shined and carried the team. Most notable is his 166 yard + 4 TD performance vs. Indianapolis in the playoffs. Only problem is that it was just a 1 year rental and now he's gone. Still better than nothing and he definitely had an impact last year.

Wait another year. Now it looks great for both sides (the best situation).

Agreed but I have no doubt Patterson will have a good year.

However that doesn't mean Jamie Collins, Logan Ryan and Josh Boyce won't either I'm really excited to see what they can do this year.

Cordarrelle Patterson is pretty sick though. WR/KR/RB. Threat to take it all the way any time he touches the ball. Has to be accounted for every time he's on the field. Reminds me of a taller Percy Harvin.

I think this trade ends up as a win-win for both teams.

If/when Cordarelle Patterson learns body control and gets better hands, he's going to be even more special. Jamie Collins has that same special potential too, though and Logan Ryan is just the icing on the cake.

I'm amazed that we are talking about a guy who caught 45 passes and averaged 10.4 a catch as if he is the next Calvin Johnson.
The guy we drafted a round later had almost as many catches and more yards despite missing a large chunk of the season.

I get Patterson did a good job returning kicks but as a WR he was less effective than Dobson, who got ripped to shreds around here.

Instead of saying "If/when Patterson learns body control and better hands" I thought about saying "If/when Patterson learns how to be a WR", but thought that might be too harsh. As an athlete, Patterson is something. As a WR, he's mediocre currently.

I think player-wise it's worked out for both teams. Philosophically though, I have a hard time seeing Patterson as a good pick for a team that was not a WR away from being a contender. They could have used help in a lot of areas, and I personally consider a top flight WR to be the icing on a cake, not the position to build around.

He's a really dynamic KR, and that's where 1300+ of his "2000" yards came from, so it's a little misleading.

Good for both teams, I think. Collins is special; Logan Ryan is a legitimate NFL D-back; Boyce may or may not be really good.

Patterson is overrated as a WR, look at his stats and I'm sure he was below Dobson, Thompkins and maybe even Gronk who played not even half a season.

BB clearly wanted Collins, which i agree with. He probably would have taken him in round 1 if he couldn't make the trade. I would say it was a very good trade with us

If Patterson doesn't explode its good for both sides. I think Boyce has to make a big 2nd year leap though.

worked well for both teams

codarrelle was a bad fit here......great potential, but would have struggled mentally here.....
I disagree.

At the very least, he'd still be an All Pro Kick Returner.

And if Aaron Hernendez could thrive in our offense, I'm sure they would've found ways to use Patterson.

I don't think of the trade as about Patterson for the Patriots, because I thought there was ZERO chance he was going to be the Patriots' pick at that point. What they traded away was pick, not the player, and IMO "Jamie Collins, Logan Ryan, Josh Boyce, and a one-year rental on LaGarette Blount" is an excellent return for #29 overall. (The expected value of a late first-round pick is approx. 60% chance of one starter.)

Honestly, this whole thread assumes Patterson is who the Patriots would've taken with that pick. That's probably not the truth of it. I predict the Patriots picks correctly approximately 0% of the time, so I don't know who we would have ended up with or how they would have performed. If you're just looking at raw production on the team for the respective picks, another year or two of data is probably needed.

EDIT: patchick apparently posted as I was trying to and also addressed my concern above

Most of pattersons's highlights are of him as a returner. Less effective as a WR. New England's offense would have been too complex for him to digest.

At this point I think it's about even (and much of that thanks is owed to Blount).

Vikings got a game changer and the Patriots walked away with one solid player (Ryan), a guy that looks to have high upside (Collins), and a question mark (Boyce). My guess is the Vikings are going to be happy with it no matter how the Patriots end of the deal turns out. Our future doesn't look so certain. I think people overestimate Collins' abilities off a few plays because this team has been desperate for a play making linebacker. He still has a long way to go. Ryan got embarrassed a few times last year but looks to be solid overall. Boyce, to me, is a complete unknown. I think he will have a tough time making the team.

If you ignore KR TDs i.e. a few plays, Patterson was a disappointment.
