Lovie Smith in as Tampa Bay Bucs HC; Revis may be out

I really don't see Bill Belichick breaking the cap to sign a marquee franchise cornerback. Not in an era where you usually have to play with five or six DBs on the field at the same time. Revis will always have to play for bad teams because bad teams are the only teams that will pay his price... part of the reason that they are bad teams.

Sounds like a situation similar to Rodney Harrison if we can make it happen.

You'd really compare the situation of Darrelle Revis making 16 million dollars a year to that of Rodney Harrison's, when Belichick picked him up and took him to the Ground Round for a burger?

Let some idiot team with a ton of cap room sign Revis to a pact around 10 million again. He'll probably claim that the cut from 16 million down to 10 million will prohibit him from "feeding his family," have a bounceback year where he picks off several passes, and play on a team who goes .500 at best.

I think it depends on what your definition of "marquee franchise CB" is, but I definitely agree with your overall statement.

I think Belichick appreciates a guy like Talib, and may be willing to spend 5-6 million per season to have someone like him stay here, but I highly doubt that we'll ever see Belichick go out and spend 10-12-13 million dollars on a CB.

defensive backs are only as good as the pass rush. spend the $$ on ends and tackles.

It would be interesting to compare the price tags for Talib and Revis if this happened, because both would be UFA and both would be about the same age (Revis is 6 months older). With Revis' big injury being a one-timer (ACL) and Talib's big injury seemingly being chronic (hip), I would find it very interesting, indeed.

I still have a hard time believing that Revis will come down enough to be considered in N.England, but your point is valid.

Talib's injury situation is very concerning too, but I think he's much more in our price range myself. I would think something in the range of the Leigh Bodden deal (give or take a small amount) at 4/22 would be appropriate for retaining Talib. With a pact like that, you can accept the fact that Talib historically misses 20% of every season much easier.

I actually kind of assumed that Revis' situation would be re-assessed whether Schiano was fired or not, just due to how much they overvalued the market in my opinion.

Re: Report: Bucs are hiring Lovie Smith as their HC

Lovie Smith = overrated as a HC. Tedford might help but Lovie couldn't get it done with Martz.

This theory could change down the road a bit when it's time to assess our "new" QB situation if BB is still here when Brady leaves, but for the time being I'd have a difficult time envisioning Belichick paying a CB outside of Sherman or maybe Patrick Peterson (not necessarily meaning to compare their overall talent, just the fact that both are up and comers) double digit AAV salaries.

I'd like to think that the Pats have a shot at keeping Talib. Of course, we never really know what the player and agent would like to think about their value on the open market! :)

This doesn't have as much bearing as it may sound like I'm attempting to make it to be, but I was very pleased to hear that Belichick picked up the phone to tell Talib that he had made the probowl himself. That can't be perceived as a bad thing.

Talib comes off as a guy who appreciates praise and attention, a good relationship with his coach, being depending on and respected, and being paid fairly and reasonably which is competitive to market value. I think his "me first" attitude (if it ever was as bad as reported to be) may have lessened a bit since he's been here. I think he likes winning, and having people look up to him. As long as someone else doesn't offer something way out of the ballpark, I'm starting to think that we may be okay in keeping him.

This article is just silly. Lovie Smith isn't a pure Tampa 2 Coach, in fact nobody runs a pure Tampa 2 anymore in the NFL. In Chicago Lovie run a very multiple defense and in his last year, their predominant coverage was cover 1 man. He will have absolutely no problem using Revis and I'm sure he will be able to utilize him much better than Schiano did. This is just pure speculation to try and create interest, there is no real substance behind it.

IF Revis is released, i think we need to make a hard push for this guy. Our SB teams had Law, Asante, etc... A shutdown physical corner who is a future HOF to go along with Talib would allow BB to do some unique and fun things on defense. These talents don't come around too often and i would love to see him as a Patriot. We have a chance next year, if healthy to be a top 10 defense, with Revis we could be #1. Give TB a #1 ranked defense and we win the SB.

I hate to say it but unless the Patriots win a SB this year, there are probably 5 other teams someone would look to before the Patriots if their goal was to get a ring. 2004 was a long time ago. The Patriots are seen as a contender but Denver, 49s, Seattle, Saints and possible others are seen as the new favorites every year over the Patriots. Patriots are a solid team that will make it into the playoffs every year but long ago bare the days when they were seen as a ticket to a ring.

Another loser as HC.

That's ridiculous, every year we are in the mix, more than any other team. You know if you come to the Pats you get a playoff seed and probably a first round bye.

We're not in a great salary cap position at the moment, and even though we have somewhere around 3.5 to 4 million available in cap space, we have a TON of our own free agents to try and sign over the next 14 months or so. Talib, Edelman, Blount, Wendell, Connelly, Cannon, Wilfork, Solder, Gregory, Vereen, Ridley, Bolden, Kelly, and 5th yr options due to Chandler Jones, Hightower, etc.

I'd have a difficult time imagining Bill Belichick being able to afford ANY outside free agent player on either side of the ball that would cost 6-8 million, let alone the 10-12 million that Revis would probably cost. He's making 16 million dollars this year, so it's pretty likely that he'll be forced to take a pay cut, but he's used to making a lot of money, and with so many teams having sufficient cap space, someone will most likely give him a good deal.

On top of that, we recently have drafted some very cheap, rookie pact players in Dennard, Logan Ryan, etc; along with possibly paying Aqib Talib approx. 5-6 million dollars a year too. They also just signed Arrington to a very nice deal of 4 yrs/16 million. Where would they all play?

its not going to happen Revis will still get 10 million on the open market hell im not sure the pats will even bring back Aqib Talib if his asking for much more then the 5 million his making now

Yeah, that's pretty much what I'm thinking and my overall point also.

I would expect one of the teams who has some significant cap room to try and make a play on Revis, although anything is obviously possible for some of the regular yearly competitors.

I just highly doubt that a coach like Bill Belichick would be interested in paying that significant of a yearly cap hit on a major pact like that. Our CB position isn't too bad at all if we retain Aqib Talib, and that should be able to be done in a comparable fashion to the 2009 pact that we gave Leigh Bodden due to the downturn in the CB market, which I expect to stay somewhere in the same range.

A pact like that still takes into account the risks associated with injuries, etc, and one would have to assume that Belichick was fairly happy with what he was able to do on defense with Talib. I don't think too much would change with paying Revis 2x that much. When Talib was on, he basically did a great job on his assignment, even if he had a bit of a poorer stretch there a few games ago in my opinion. I attribute that to not fully being back at full health.

Re: Report: Bucs are hiring Lovie Smith as their HC

I would have liked to see what he could have done to the Lions D.

I would love to see what Josh McDaniels could do with the lions offense, I don't want Josh to Go but if he was to be a HC next year anyways that's the best spot and for there defense that D line running the pats defensive scheme would be awesome

I agree the pats are set at CB next year if they can bring back Talib at around the same price
