Pats offering #23 & #47 to Jax @ #8 According to Peter King

For whatever it's worth, Todd McShay had this to add on the subject of a tradeup:

"One of the big things we're hearing Friday is that the New England Patriots are actively looking to move up into the top 10-20 overall picks. The Patriots have three second-round picks and two third-round picks, so they have more than enough to put together a package that would include their current pick at No. 23 to move up the board. In fact, we've heard New England already has contacted two teams about making a deal.

So whom are the Patriots targeting? We expect them to address their defense, and Tennessee DE Robert Ayers is an intriguing possibility in the middle of the first round. Although Ayers' best fit is as a 4-3 defensive end, he's capable of lining up at outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme, and head coach Bill Belichick values that kind of versatility."

Todd McShay: Denver Broncos need defense more than they need Mark Sanchez - ESPN

If they are trading into that range it can only be for either Curry or one of the top OT's

Personally I hope its one of the top OT's as I dont think Peppers is still out of the question

We could be sitting here tomorrow night with our mouths wide open saying WOWZERS :p

My minds going in a 100 different directions thinking about what the pats are going to do, whether it's trading up in the top ten or making a trade for peppers afterall I dunno. One thing I do no it's going to be one hell of a day for all patriots fans!

ESPN just had a mock with team beat writers polled. According to the beat writers, Seattle takes Currry at #4, Browns Sanchez at #5 or trade pick to someone who wants the QB, Bengals take Andre Smith at #6, Green Bay would love to draft Raji at #9, Green Bay won't trade, so how does this deal go down? Maybe the Pats take Jackson at #8 if he's their guy, but Jax may hold out for a sweeter deal. And once you get beyond #10, what's the point of a trade?

I don't understand the Browns-Sanchez thing. They drafted a QB in the first round in 2007. He's just getting a chance to play now... its way to early to get rid of him.

I'm not talking merits here, but it's a new coaching staff and front office, so there's no inherent loyalty.

I know what's going on. Pioli did his old boss one last favor and told BB that he is not taking Curry. That's why BB wants to move up.

I kid, I kid.

If they move up it's to rake someone over the coals for Sanchez, then move down slightly and secure Malcolm Jenkins...... That's my theory until it's proven dead-wrong!!

Right, but theres also no reason to take one of the riskiests prospects in years at the top of the first round when you've got a highly toughted prospect who's just getting a taste of play time.

You're assuming they consider the player a risk, but don't consider staying with Quinn to be one.

Yes, the games have commenced. I don't necessarily disagree with Synovia on the IDEA of the Browns keeping Quinn. I just don't think they feel tied to him because he's not their guy.

Possibly not but I think they were testing his value....

Matt Bowen from NFP guesses that the Pats are trying to move up for Malcolm Jenkins - just a guess.

The National Football Post | Friday Draft Buzz And Rumors

"From what I’m hearing, the New England Patriots are definitely interested in moving up, as reported by Peter King of Sports Illustrated earlier today, and I suspect they have their eyes on Ohio State corner Malcolm Jenkins — not LSU defensive end Tyson Jackson as some reports are saying.

But I’m also hearing that the Pats will only move up at a discounted rate as they don’t want to give up much in the process.

Jenkins is expected to come off the board anywhere from No. 9 to Green Bay, and league speculation has him landing in either New Orleans at No. 14 or San Diego at No. 16. If he gets past the Packers, don’t be surprised to see New England make a play and slide up ahead of the Saints."

Bring-em In!!!!!!!

That would make sense because i dont see any way that Jenkins gets past NO at 14. I would definitely give up 47 in order to take the best CB in this draft.

BB also said on Wednesday that he is one of the few people comfortable on trading picks in advance of the draft without knowing that a specific player will be available: "I think at this point in time it’s a lot of preliminary conversations. You talk to a team, see whether they are interested in talking to you, whichever way it goes. Are they interested in moving a certain pick and/or are you interested in moving a certain pick? You’re just trying to get some parameters. Some teams are at a certain point in the draft where they say they don’t want to move. Well, then you know on draft day that if you were interested in moving to that spot, that’s probably not as good of an option as [it would be to deal with] other teams that tell you they would love to consider something if the one or two guys they are looking for aren’t there. Well, great if it comes to that point and you are looking to move to that position then that’s the team you would contact. So, it’s more along those lines. If you look at the number of pre-draft draft choice trades – not player for draft choice, but straight draft choice trades – you won’t find very many of them. Probably the last one would be when Jimmy Johnson and I made one in 1992 or 1993, a couple days before the draft. Teams don’t like to do it. I am personally comfortable doing it, but most teams don’t like to do it."

I think BB is doing exactlty what he explained - he's exploring possible trade partners in advance to decide if there is interest. If they would be willing to trade now, I think he would be willing to do it. If not, he's opened channels and done some homework to figure out who may be likely trade partners tomorrow. With only 10 minutes per draft spot, there's not a lot of time to explore options if you haven't laid the groundwork in advance.

If Jax were willing to trade, I think BB would do it. Look at it this way:

1. Detroit will almost certainly take Matt Stafford #1, and have a deal in place (if not signed) later today.
2. That leaves 3 OTs (Jason Smith, Eugene Monroe, and Andre Smith), 1 LB (Aaron Curry), 1 DT (BJ Raji), 1 DE (Tyson Jackson), 1 WR (Michael Crabtree) and 1 QB (Mark Sanchez) likely to go in the next 8 picks. I'm willing to bet that BB would be happy with any of the OT's, Curry, Raji, and possibly Crabtree or Jackson. And if Sanchez fell to 8 he would be in a position to broker a trade with Denver or Washington to 12 or 13. So I think his risk is minimal.

Your observations are brilliant but your conclusion is exactly wrong, I think. He's EXPLORING CONTINGENCIES, WHAT IFS. He won't trade UNLESS THE PLAYER HE WANTS FALLS. He said himself pick for pick trades are unusual, it's usually pick for PLAYER. He's not going to trade a pick and just wing it. What does he do if Sanchez and Curry are both gone and no one wants to trade down and he doesn't want anyone that high?

Come on everyone....This is Bill B. we are talking about. This kind of news gets all the other AFC East teams scrambling...I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Billy B. trades down or even out of the 1st round.

This is the part I don't understand. The Saints are prime candidates for trading back and collecting picks in the sweet spot in this draft class (late 1st, 2nd and early 3rd)...where they happen to be pretty barren at the moment. The Saints, Texans and Chargers are in the worst positions in this draft as far as value. I would think they would be very anxious to trade out.

Heres something i dont understand. Everyone is for grabbing a player at #8 in the draft, isnt that big money? Why would the Patriots put all this money into a player who is not even proven in the NFL. This is riskier than trading for Peppers!

Jenkins would make more sense as a target of a pre draft trade as he's less likely to be gone by #6 than Jackson.
