Will Pats sign another WR (or is Washington legit #5?)

So with the Pats having

Moss
Welker
Gaffney
Jackson

As the clear Top 4 WRs, is Washington a legit #5 option, or do you see the Pats picking someone else up to replace the absence of Stallworth?

And even if Washington actually catches a pass this year, do you think given the importance of the passing game NE looks to carry 6 WRs again?

I know they looked a couple of FAs. There isn't much left out there now (depending on your opinion of DJax).

I could see them drafting a mid-round WR, somebody like DJ Hall.

Thoughts?

(This of course alos assumes Aiken is primarily a ST guy and won't be playing much WR.)

A #5 WR might as well be a special team standout, by definition, so yes, Washington is a legit #5.

That being said - it's kindof silly to worry about who our #5 WR is going to be.

Washington is easily a legit # 5 guy. I see him being the #4 guy for this team. I don't expect much at all from Jackson.

I would like to have another WR on the roster due to the fact that we don't really know what we are going to get from Washington or Jackson in the passing game. Both were only on special teams last year.

They have 6 WR under contract, all of whom they presumably expect to make the team.

I think the base case is they stand pat at WR -- camp fodder and PS-headed guys perhaps aside -- and amuse themselves by beefing up the TE position. Watson's contract runs out at some point, and we know drafting TEs is one of their favorite things to do anyway.

I think it's possible the Patriots sign another WR, depending on what formations they choose to feature next season. I think Aiken and Washington are both core special teamers who are unlikely to help in the passing game. Washington used to be an effective receiver, and Aiken never has been. Washington hasn't caught more than 10 passes in a season since 2004. If Chad Jackson steps up (one of the huge x factors for next year), the Patriots should be fine with spots 5 and 6 going to special teamers. I think it's also possible that Aiken and Washington are in competiton with each other for a special teams spot and that we could add a WR in the draft who has return ability.

I think we're about set at 1 and 2, and 3 looks likely to be set, barring freakish preseason surprises.

But 3, 4, and 5 just have to wait for camp.

You can't rule out high value/low risk additions, just because sometimes the deal is too good to pass up. But don't hold your breath. It's defense time this offseason.

I think physically, Chad Jackson is what the Pats want to replace Stallworth. But he's no Stallworth. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Pats draft a WR. Though he's not big, I'm a big fan of Dexter Jackson. Brady would have a field day with him. I wouldn't mind taking him with our (1st) 3rd round pick.

Last year we dressed 6 WR at the expense of TE but i do not see this happening as we will run more than last year.
so game day will be 5 active WR which leads me to believe

with kelly and aiken coming in spl tream .when we run 4 WR formation we can use faulk/watson/thomas/kelly/aiken means they can carry 1 more player in another spot.

They have 7 under contract...don't forget Aiken...and CJ Jones who showed a lot in last year's preseason games..They will add 3-4 more..so they will have 9-12 before camp. If they bring in a vet, it will be in a later month and I think there will be some competition for some of the spots..Moss Welker Gaffney are there..but what 2-3 will join them? That is where it will be very interesting.

I just see no reason why anyone would list Chad Jackson with any advantage over Washington for the 4th WR spot. That spot is going to be up for grabs in camp.

Many of you don't seem to care much for Chad Jackson but let's keep in mind that they felt highly enough to move up in the second round of the draft a couple years ago. Yes, he's been injured but he has #1 WR talent and with a couple years under his belt, I think he is going to establish himself this year as a legitimate outside threat leaving Welker to tear apart teams in the slot. When Moss is done in a couple years (with 2 rings), Jackson will be entering his prime and ready to lead the league. Wow, I didn't realize I had man-love for this guy.

Seriously, though. I think Maroney & Jackson had unfairly taken a lot of heat for not being able to carry the load. Maroney has done everything asked of him (including not complaining for more carries) and, although I would have liked to see more of Jackson, he was behind Moss, Stallworth, and Welker in his second season. Not sure who could have broken into that line-up. Especially with Belichick preferring veterans.

This is the year we have to fix the "D". In my early stages on preparing for draft, I like McKelvin, Q. Groves, B. Bell, Tyrell Johnson as our first day picks.

Quite the opposite. No player on the roster has more popularity on this board with less production than Chad Jackson. Look no further than the initial post that awards him one of the top 4 WR spots on the roster. He is clearly a top 4 WR coming off a zero catch season.

Jackson had a 'zero catch season' while rehabbing from a major knee injury. Washington had a 'zero catch season' while being healthy all year. The odds favor Jackson as the likely #4 over Washington.
