Is Don Shula right? Should there be an asterisk next to the Patriots if they go 16-0 because of Spygate?
No. At least there shouldn't be. If the Patriots go 16-0, it will be a much greater accomplishment than what the 1972 Miami Dolphins did. This is the free-agency era. It's tougher to build teams. As far as the asterisk, that's foolish. Did the Patriots cheat? They got caught early, so they haven't cheated since if they did. And how much did that really help? Is it an issue in past years? Maybe. Is it an issue now? No. Shula and those 1972 Miami Dolphins players get old when it comes to wishing losses on undefeated teams. They become bitter old men. Look, records are meant to be broken. One day, somebody will go unbeaten. But even though it was undefeated, that Dolphins team isn't one of the greats of all-time.
