Re: not so fast...

I'm sure she's a wonderful woman, but Shalise Manza Young's reporting does not quite carry the same weight as does Adam Schefter's.
To which I say "Thank God!"

He's playing a kid's game..getting paid millions....and should be unhappy???Let him do a REAL day's work and see how HAPPY he will be playing football and living life in the top percent. Let him live that life and see how he'll change his tune.

What are you talking about??

Let's go over this again. Supply and demand. A rare and premium skill. Market value. Feeling slighted in relation to your peers.

Add to that the fact that these guys are generally 1.) egotistical; and 2.) superficial thinkers, and it becomes clear how easily and how much these guys are affected by their agents and their peers.

Please, a lot of these guys come from poor, difficult backgrounds, don't begrudge them their chance to simply bargain for the fair market value of their services.

Consider what the top 5 country singers make. Is that more or less than what one of the top 5 cornerbacks should make? Why, or why not?

I couldn't disagree more about your thoughts on TC. Every year there are new players added to the team (e.g. Meriweather and James) and these new players have to work with the vets like Samuel in order to build some chemistry and confidence with each other. It is also a time to learn the new playbook. Yes, it mostly stays the same but there are new plays installed every year. Also, there is a HUGE difference between being in shape to play football and being in football shape to play the game. A players body must get used to the hitting again and Samuel is not getting his body ready for that because he is not in TC or the preseason games.

IF TC was such a waste of time then why do all teams continue to hold TC? For traditions sake? He has missed how many practices? Asante isn't going to be able to just prepare for the Jets and perform at the same level had he been in camp.

Training camp was designed to get fat players in shape in the older days. Ask any of today's players whether two-a-days are necessary. No. It IS important to learn a system, and it's essential for rookies and some free agents. Why do teams hold TC? Because teams frequently change coaches, systems, etc. Players rotate in, so it's important from that aspect. Asante is not new to this system, and does not need the conditioning. He will report next week because that's when the team begins focus on the regular season, and inserting the gameplan for the Jets. That is important. Older players will try and get out of camp for any reason. They do this because they know they'll be just fine. Players now workout year-round, and are conditioned athletes. What practice does is helps them understand assignments, and work on placing themselves in the right place based on the opponent's tendancies. The "camp" portion of TC is generally an evaluation period to ensure the team maximizes the 53 spots on the roster. They do little gameplanning, and install basic elements of an offense/defense. It is usually done piece by piece. A veteran certainly can miss this piece. If he were to miss practices next week and moving forward, then he would be behind.

Huh? Are you responding to me??

No suprises here (glad to hear it though). It's pretty much what most experts have predicted.

As for availability, depends on what kind shape he comes in with. There were reports that Rodney was on his azz (texting) AS for the past couple weeks, big brothering him in his workout routine.

If he comes in in good shape, he'll concentrate on scheming in. I'd say he could be ready for week 1. Week 3 seems to far out, unless he come in real rough.

I have no idea where I heard this, but I recall a vet saying something to the tune of, "missing TC just once adds two years on to your career."

Frankly, it seems as if BB has taken a similar view now that he has a large portion of experienced players. He has definitely toned down the practices and made a distinct effort to keep the reps for older guys down.

I said week three as a starter at the latest in response to Ken's first post. If I had to guess, I would say that Samuel gets the start in week two after playing as the NB in game one.

It's not a question of being happy v. unhappy. It's a question of maximizing your market value.

Furthermore, people have a rosy picture of an athlete's life based on the money, and don't focus on the work they put in. I may not make as much as Tommy does, but he works a hell of a lot harder than I do. He works 14, 15 hour days, takes a physical pounding, and essentially crams all week for a mental exam at the end of the week. Go into an NFL lockerroom after a game. If you want to see some guys that take a beating, and keep on going, take a look around. They make a lot of money, sure. But they also have a very short shelf life, and their career is in danger every play of every game, every play in practice, and in the weight room. Is football fun? Yes. But there is a lot of hard work, and abuse taken in order to play the game. They would be silly not to maximize the amount of money that they make. Perhaps it's because I've seen it from both sides, but I laugh sometimes at how bitter and hostile fans get over player negotiations. It really is just business.

Yeah, I've heard similar. The players I know detest TC. They go because they have to. But most guys are stoked to begin preparation for week 1. That's when football becomes fun again.

He's playing a kids game? I'd like to see you take a hit from a NFL player and say that its a kids game. Theres a reason why so many elite athletes have season and career ending injuries each year. Asante has an elite skill that allows him to be paid more than most people. The NFL makes billions of dollars off of players which is why they get paid more than you.

Good rant! Well said. :rocker:

I took a brutal hit on the option from Dhani Jones. Laid me out. Concussion.

I still feel that.

Kid's game my ass.

I encourage those who bash Asante to read Tedy's book. Tedy mentions concerns over his contract when he was out with the stroke, and hiring a lawyer (despite always negotiating himself in the past) to represent him to ensure his contract wouldn't be voided. He also talks about concerns over people thinking he was just trying to 'pick up a paycheck' and Mr. Kraft sending him to numerous doctors to make sure he could play. An owner views a player as an investment, and all players- even guys who can be the face of a franchise like Tedy- are concerned with their contract and being able to maximize the amount of money made. Tedy probably has one of the best relationships with an owner in the sport, yet he still had some concern over his contract status after a stroke.

Players are an investment. When they are no longer profitable, they are cut loose. Why shouldn't a player at the height of his worth fight for the cash that he is worth? There will probably never be another time in his life where Asante can ask for the amount of money his market value is worth right now.

I may be recalling family details incorrectly, but I hope your Mrs. doesn't read this forum!:bricks:

Yeah, then she may question the motives of my purchasing her Pats jerseys...

(I really don't like the direction this thread is taking...NTTAWWT)

Re: Asante Samuel Will Report Next Week

The fans have a RIGHT to gripe..He's getting paid TOP money and not in camp..every fan SHOULD gripe..he's starting off poorly. NOT what getting top money deserbes. Sure as far as teh VBA goes, but as a so called professional he has already shown what he is made of.
Sorry, but he is NOT under contract and is NOT getting paid. What he is doing is perfectly legal, whether or not you like it.

Moving back on topic, I have never had a problem withthe Samuel situation. I've always seen it as the business side. The only problem I have is when they shoot off their mouths ashe did once or twice. But, he has now kept it shut for quite a while now.

Now, if he was not in the fold by the time the season started then I would have a problem with it and not looked at it as business anymore.
