So, you're the GM (not Bart Scott, though his comments don't seem as outlandish today). On one side, you've got the best TE the game has ever seen. He completely changes your offense and you've lost many big games without him. On the other side, you've got a guy who has not played a full season after year 3 and likely never will again. You hold your breath each time he falls it takes a big hit.

Question: Do you still open the vault and give him the money he feels he deserves and his talent demands, which is top dollar? Or do you balk because you fear you won't get your money's worth (legitimately) and risk seeing him on another team? What, in your opinion, is fair for both sides contractually?

You do nothing this offseason and you tell Rosenhaus you would love to have him finish his career here and would be happy discussing an extension after next season.Unfortunately for him Gronk lost all leverage for a new deal for the time being.

How much guarantee money does he have left?

LOL. No new deal. He's signed for 3 more years after this and got a generous early deal given his past health. I love the guy and am absolutely not one who wants to move on from him but his contract is appropriate for his talent / injury history combination.

No new guaranteed money left, just the $6 million of his bonus that has already been paid but hasn't hit the cap yet.

How much money guarantee though?
Don't know but I do know that there is basically no cap reason to not keep him next year so (barring a shocking retirement) there's no reason to deal with it until after next year.

So if they did the unthinkable and traded him they wouldn't be hurt cap wise?

As unfortunate as the current situation is, it should at least keep his very vocal "camp" from agitating for a new deal. It seemed to me that if Gronk stayed healthy for the rest of the season, there would be a demand for a new contract during the off-season.

Why trade a HOF caliber player when they are on a really team friendly deal? Beyond that the injury diminishes his trade value and imo anything less than two firsts for him would be foolish.

Wow we really signed Gronk for a while when you think about it.

IMO...
Pats will be willing to pay $7 mill next year for this part time player. But at $11 mill and $12 mill in '18 + '19, way too much for Bill the Economist

I'm done with him, football players play football and Gronkowski has not played enough of it

Dam didn't know that: the often injuried Gronk better shave $4Mill off both his numbers in 18 + 19 if he expects to stay on this Team.

How good will Gronk be in two to three years when Brady isn't here? That's something to factor as well.

With the way the cap is rising year-over-year, $11-12m a year for Gronk for two years may not be that bad.

Surely a renegotiation is beneficial from both sides if structured correctly (but not until training camp 2017). Give Gronk a pay rise but link it to games/snaps played. Gronk gets the pay rise he wants and the team get some insurance if he goes down again.

Pats aren't giving anything out unless a) he is healthy and b) it protects them from another serious injury.
