Pats Should Keep Garoppolo Through 2017

This this this times 100.

It amazes me how so many people think both Brady and Garoppolo are willing to bend over backwards, give up money, give up playing time, and basically allow themselves to be treated unfairly in order to do everything possible for New England.

Brady has proven he is willing to take a little less in order to help the team. However, it's a long way from that to thinking he'd be willing to take virtual league minimum so the Patriots can keep the guy who wants to kick Brady out the door before Brady wants to leave.

Garoppolo has no control until after 2017, but it is ridiculous to think that he is going to accept significantly less money to play for a team where he is the backup for at least another full year.

Garoppolo's current deal pays $3.5 million total. Unlike Brady, his next contract will lead to a major life-long lifestyle change. After 2017, he is going to want Osweiler numbers because that will push him into a completely new financial strata, not to mention he certainly wants to be a starter.
I definitely agree with your thoughts. In the meantime, Im sure we'll go over every possible scenario--realistic or otherwise.

As mentioned, it's almost certainly going to come down to one or the other. In BB we trust.

He very well might be willing to go to the highest bidder, whoever it is, to cash in. Or, he might be willing to accept a Pats-friendly deal for ONE YEAR to stay put knowing he will be in a stable, quality program long-term and THEN cash in big-time when Brady leaves after 2018. Is that really so far-fetched to imagine happening?
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, yes. Why the heck would anybody take a Pats-friendly deal to backup (and then HOPE everything stays the same as planned) when other teams will be offering tens of millions guaranteed to start? Keep in mind that, as mentioned above, his next contract will change his life and his lifestyle forever.

Pushing Tom Brady out the door is a no-brainer? Really, did you just type that and post it where everybody could quote it from here on out?

I don't believe that we have seen a QB quite like Tom Brady well ever. For him to defy age, yes I'd rather bet on Tom than against him. He is signed through 2019 and that's enough for him to retire a Patriot.

As for JG, he could be great or he could be a flash in the pan. Right now he is flashing really good stuff, that makes him valuable in today's market. But imagine what BB could do with the draft picks if we convert JG into draft capital and bank on Brissett as our backup instead?

nope........after the 2017 season, you push the soon to be 42 year old QB out the door.......because a year too soon is better than a year too late

if the Jimmy we have seen in 2016 is what Jimmy is, this is a no brainer

I mean, we don't need the draft choices. If Jimmy agrees to take less money after a no falloff Brady says he's coming back, I'd love it.

What I know can't happen is for Brady and Garoppolo to make $30m together in 2017-2018.

That can't happen.

One of them has to go. And I don't think that will be Brady.
That is not the cost.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, because he would be playing for the New England Patriots and not the Cleveland Browns or another comparatively shaky organization he'd be automatically expected to carry without a capable supporting cast. I would anticipate that if this ever were to occur, his contract here wouldn't exactly leave him a pauper. This is on the assumption that Brady would retire/move on after 2018.

Depends on the offers. Set a high price, if someone meets it off he goes. Otherwise we keep him and revisit in March, 2018.

My high price? Two mid #1s, or equivalent. No one would do that? Fine, I'll keep him then.

And how do you plan to keep him? He's a free agent in March 2018 and he's going to be wanting more money than NE can afford to pay.

Let's say your choices after next season were to

1) sign a 1 year deal with the NEP for $10M with the knowledge that you will be a backup for the NEP for 1 year and you know (wink, wink) that you are in line for the starting job at market rates following that year.

2) sign a market rate multiyear deal with the Cleveland Browns at 20M/yr.

#2 seems a no-brainer until you realize that the Browns franchise is so bad that you will be lucky to even play out your 4- or 5-year contract. #1 is really the no-brainer, since inyour 10-year run as starting QB of the NEP you will way more than make up that 10M that you left on the table, in the back end of your career that you would not have had in Cleveland.

Do I want to work a year as a low-paid intern for Google, knowing I will get a full-time job there after that, or do I want to go to work for Ted Wells at a big starting salary?

Thank you. Exactly what I've been saying.

If something happens to Brady, then garoppolo is worth more than anything they'll get for him

Everyone has a price. Offer me all of one team's roster for Brady - even Cleveland - done.

JG is gone if someone is foolish enough to offer the world.

If they think JAG is the next guy, they'll find a way to keep him. If not, he's outta here like **** through a goose. All the redundant trade/don't trade threads in the world aren't going to change that.

Yes, it is so far-fetched. A lot can happen in a year. He could get a serious injury in practice. Brady could miss some time and JG has a couple of stinker games. He could get hit by a car. He could hit someone with his car. He could come down with some previously undiagnosed medical condition. And on and on.

JG would be an absolute idiot to turn down a giant contract to stay for "ONE YEAR" at cheap money with NE.

I don't think he's shown anything resembling a full time QB
He is 17/28 for 195 yards without an interception and he has rushed for another 60 yards and a touchdown in 6 quarters of football. He started one game and won it 27-0 against a playoff team.

I'm just going to ruin the surprise i'm the one that's going to be Brady's heir apparent, I've been under top secret training for the last few years in BB & TB underground secret Patriot lair, i'm taking the reins in 2020

I refer you to post Nos. 65 and 67 in this thread as counterargument. Neither is as far-fetched as your suggestions that Garoppolo's career might be doomed by a car accident or phantom illness.

When the issue arrises, in 2018, Brady will be pushing 42...
The "issue" doesn't arise in 2018, it arises AFTER the 2017 season. When it becomes an issue he will be "only" 41.5 in human years, and who is to say Tom Brady is like anyone else who has played the game at this late age.

And if Tom Brady can't get the benefit of the doubt from you after 16 years of stellar service, why are you giving JG all the credit in the world after 5 quarters. I can't believe some of the crap I'm hearing from you guys. Couldn't you wait for at least a BIT of slippage in Tom's play before you cast him out for the first pretty face you see.
