I think I'm going to have start to adjust my expectations about this team. I originally felt that if the Pats played their A or A- game they would win a close game against the Jets. They didn't. That one was a B- at best and it came at a time where I thought the Jets played pretty well.
So when you add in ELEVEN dropped passes to go along with a few very surprising calls Then add the loss of 3 starters and the fact you played against the best D in the league with only 18 offensive players available. That was a great performance. And like I was saying all week, the team is no going to get the credit they deserve.
1. Josh will never bang his head against the wall when he plays someone. If you have a great run defense, he's not going to run against you, especially when you are as depleted on the OL as we were. I might have complained about a couple of 3rd and short selections, but the over the course of entire game, it was another excellent innovative game plan.
2. Drop 11 passes, lose 3 offensive starters, play against the best defense in the league, and STILL put 30 points on the board should be the Headline that leads Monday media. Can you imagine how many points would have been put up with an additional 11 catches....or 9 for that matter.
3. I certainly didn't see anything from James White that would want him in that role unless he's the back up. If he had been available I would rather have Boldin as the 3rd down back, or even use Blount. In fact if I were running the team I'd be looking and seeing about the health and availability of Cadet to back up Lewis.
But I would be remiss not to point out that in a couple of occasions when I noticed White had to pass block, he put his nose right in there, which I liked. However he simply hasn't shown me anything that would elevate this kid even to a JAG.
4. The OL did better than I thought. It certainly wan't great, but definitely good enough. I don't think there were many mental mistakes that led to the kind of plays that lead to pick or fumbles. Sometimes guys got beat, but with our offense, smart guys that who try hard can minimize that talent advantage.
BTW- Volmer was a man. He isn't as athletic as Solder, which affect the run and screen games, but I wonder if Cannon will go to RT when he comes back. Also I will be interested to see how Flemming gets graded out this week. On the surface he did a very solid job, with the exception of the one inside move Wilkerson made. Remember dropped back 54 times and had only 3 sacks, including one on the last play of the half. Also on the plus side, I saw only one pass rush where Andrews was driven back into Brady's face. For most of the day, Brady had a clean middle, at least for 3-4 seconds.
5. The back shoulder pass shows what Chandler can do potentially. I hope he doesn't get impatient, because eventually the game will come where he's going to put up some big numbers. Also it was cool that Williams had a catch and made a nice move for a 300 lb guy in trying to get some extra yardage. I wouldn't hate it if he got one or 2 targets a game.
6. The worst thing about Edlemans drop, was that he cleanly beat Revis on the route. Now THAT would have been sweet.
7. This is the think I liked most about this win. This was a physical game, against a physical team, and the Pats simply out hit the Jets for most of this game. Back in 2001, one of the signature things about that team, was that even when they lost, the team that beat them was so beaten up, they rarely did well their next game. In fact that most teams didn't fare well after playing they Pats. They were never the most talented team that year, but they were always the most physical team in the league.
Thank good no one looked like they were seriously hurt in this game, but there were SEVERAL Jet players who had trouble bouncing up after some collisions. Unlike the Pats they came into this game as healthy as any team in the league. They didn't leave it the same way.
8. The DL played their best game of the year, even though they only got 2 sacks. Ninko had at least 4 or 5 pass blocks and 2 he might have caught (one he SHOULD have). Jones got a sack and had decent pressure all day. Plus both played yeoman duty once again with Sheard out. Their energy level will be a worry against Miami because of the short turnaround.
9. But the biggest Kudo should belong to the big uglies in the middle. Hard to know exactly who to give them because it is the one area of the field that has some depth, but Branch popped out at me a few times. BOTTOM LINE, the best rushing team in the league in a lot of areas was held to 60 yds of rushing from their RB's.
10. Hightower and Collins are both scarily good. The difference Hightower made in the defense with his presence was highly noticeable. Not only does he bring a thumper on the run game, his presence allows Collins available to make big plays. Between them they were credited with 22 tackles and assists.
11. My biggest complaint about the defensive game plan was that Matt didn't give Butler or Ryan any help on those long medium deep crossers that the Jets were so successful on during those 3 long drives. I know people where calling for Butler and Ryan's head after they kept making those catches (especially on 3rd down), but really guys, that is an impossible route for ANYONE to cover when the QB has time, and the CB isn't getting any help from LB's or S's.
Butler had Decker all game man to man, and he caught 6 balls for 95, BUT there were 6 he didn't catch. That's pretty good too. Given how the rules are written, holding your guy to 50% when you are playing man all day is going to be graded as a decent job by the coaches in the room.
