I think I'm going to have start to adjust my expectations about this team. I originally felt that if the Pats played their A or A- game they would win a close game against the Jets. They didn't. That one was a B- at best and it came at a time where I thought the Jets played pretty well.

So when you add in ELEVEN dropped passes to go along with a few very surprising calls Then add the loss of 3 starters and the fact you played against the best D in the league with only 18 offensive players available. That was a great performance. And like I was saying all week, the team is no going to get the credit they deserve.

1. Josh will never bang his head against the wall when he plays someone. If you have a great run defense, he's not going to run against you, especially when you are as depleted on the OL as we were. I might have complained about a couple of 3rd and short selections, but the over the course of entire game, it was another excellent innovative game plan.

2. Drop 11 passes, lose 3 offensive starters, play against the best defense in the league, and STILL put 30 points on the board should be the Headline that leads Monday media. Can you imagine how many points would have been put up with an additional 11 catches....or 9 for that matter.

3. I certainly didn't see anything from James White that would want him in that role unless he's the back up. If he had been available I would rather have Boldin as the 3rd down back, or even use Blount. In fact if I were running the team I'd be looking and seeing about the health and availability of Cadet to back up Lewis.

But I would be remiss not to point out that in a couple of occasions when I noticed White had to pass block, he put his nose right in there, which I liked. However he simply hasn't shown me anything that would elevate this kid even to a JAG.

4. The OL did better than I thought. It certainly wan't great, but definitely good enough. I don't think there were many mental mistakes that led to the kind of plays that lead to pick or fumbles. Sometimes guys got beat, but with our offense, smart guys that who try hard can minimize that talent advantage.

BTW- Volmer was a man. He isn't as athletic as Solder, which affect the run and screen games, but I wonder if Cannon will go to RT when he comes back. Also I will be interested to see how Flemming gets graded out this week. On the surface he did a very solid job, with the exception of the one inside move Wilkerson made. Remember dropped back 54 times and had only 3 sacks, including one on the last play of the half. Also on the plus side, I saw only one pass rush where Andrews was driven back into Brady's face. For most of the day, Brady had a clean middle, at least for 3-4 seconds.

5. The back shoulder pass shows what Chandler can do potentially. I hope he doesn't get impatient, because eventually the game will come where he's going to put up some big numbers. Also it was cool that Williams had a catch and made a nice move for a 300 lb guy in trying to get some extra yardage. I wouldn't hate it if he got one or 2 targets a game.

6. The worst thing about Edlemans drop, was that he cleanly beat Revis on the route. Now THAT would have been sweet.

7. This is the think I liked most about this win. This was a physical game, against a physical team, and the Pats simply out hit the Jets for most of this game. Back in 2001, one of the signature things about that team, was that even when they lost, the team that beat them was so beaten up, they rarely did well their next game. In fact that most teams didn't fare well after playing they Pats. They were never the most talented team that year, but they were always the most physical team in the league.

Thank good no one looked like they were seriously hurt in this game, but there were SEVERAL Jet players who had trouble bouncing up after some collisions. Unlike the Pats they came into this game as healthy as any team in the league. They didn't leave it the same way.

8. The DL played their best game of the year, even though they only got 2 sacks. Ninko had at least 4 or 5 pass blocks and 2 he might have caught (one he SHOULD have). Jones got a sack and had decent pressure all day. Plus both played yeoman duty once again with Sheard out. Their energy level will be a worry against Miami because of the short turnaround.

9. But the biggest Kudo should belong to the big uglies in the middle. Hard to know exactly who to give them because it is the one area of the field that has some depth, but Branch popped out at me a few times. BOTTOM LINE, the best rushing team in the league in a lot of areas was held to 60 yds of rushing from their RB's.

10. Hightower and Collins are both scarily good. The difference Hightower made in the defense with his presence was highly noticeable. Not only does he bring a thumper on the run game, his presence allows Collins available to make big plays. Between them they were credited with 22 tackles and assists.

11. My biggest complaint about the defensive game plan was that Matt didn't give Butler or Ryan any help on those long medium deep crossers that the Jets were so successful on during those 3 long drives. I know people where calling for Butler and Ryan's head after they kept making those catches (especially on 3rd down), but really guys, that is an impossible route for ANYONE to cover when the QB has time, and the CB isn't getting any help from LB's or S's.

Butler had Decker all game man to man, and he caught 6 balls for 95, BUT there were 6 he didn't catch. That's pretty good too. Given how the rules are written, holding your guy to 50% when you are playing man all day is going to be graded as a decent job by the coaches in the room.

12. Bill mentioned in his post game that he was happy the way the Pats played defense on first and second downs. They were stopping the run, and making it difficult to pass. They made the Jets have to execute a lot of 3rd down plays (8 times in 14 attempts- 57%) 3 of those were Fitzpatrick scrambles, and a couple more were dump offs to a FB who had had 1 catch all year. Bill mentioned that they all had to do better on 3rd down, but again, I thought he was generally happy with the defense. The Jets played well on offense, yet the Pats and their no name secondary controlled them. I don't expect that offense to be as good next time.

13. Devin McCourty might have been doing EXACTLY what Bill and Matt wanted him to do today, but I wish the most expensive player we have on defense be put into position where he can make more plays.

14. One think I think BB is very pleased with the defense is how well the team is tackling. There wasn't much available in yards after contract. Certainly not as much as the Pats got.

15. The one area of the game where we will likely have a large superiority over is on special teams. On the coverage, punting and FG teams our ST's guys simply do a great job, which go relatively unnoticed by both us and the mediots. I know I should point it out more because it really makes a difference in field position. The difference was great even with Collins' miss on the onside kick.

16. I really appreciated the refs keeping their flags in their pockets today it made the game much more enjoyable to watch. But I wouldn't be a fan if I didn't comment on the following plays. ;)

a) the 2 ball placements that were overturned. Both were pretty bad.
b) the 3 pick plays that weren't called on the Jets. In principle I'm not unhappy so much, but OPI's a LOT less egregious have been called against the Pats so often. In fairness I wasn't watching the Pats routes, but they didn't all any on the Pats either.
c)There were 2 defensive holding call on QB runs on the opposite side of the field that shouldn't have been called, especially given the way the game was being called. They were uncharacteristic.
d) the PI on Butler was clearly the worst call of the day. If anything the receiver initiated all the contact.

Now that I have done my duty as a biased fan, I wouldn't mind having this crew again this season. Overall there have been worse.

17. Since I didn't watch a single second of the pregame, I was wondering why the announcer (who I didn't recognize) seemed so pro Jets until the end of the game when he signed off as Ian Eagle. THEN I understood. Eagle is a longtime NYC announcer and Radio guy. So his bias not only made sense, it lessened my irritation. Giving him this game was like asking Zoe and Socci to do it....and made as much sense. Can you all see the hands of the shadowy league figures behind this choice. ;)

18. It was cool to watch a football game in the morning, lying in bed with a laptop on your stomach. I'm glad the Bills showed up in time to make it a game. As much as we give **** to Rex, and most of it is deserved, you have to admire the way his team fought back to actually get ahead. The same for EJ Manuel. That was as bad a 5 minutes as I've ever seen a QB have, and he STILL had the mental toughness to get his team back in the game. Both coaches did some incredibly dumb things, but they both got their teams to play hard and they gave the fans in London an exciting game for a change. And they gave us a successful new technology to see our favorite game.

19. Ironic stat of the day that everyone in the media will be talking about was the fact Brady was the Pats leading rusher for this game. It has never happened before, and will likely never happen again. Enjoy the crap you can give to the RB's this short week

20. And its on to Miami....and fast. It's remarkable how Miami has turned things around so quickly after their bye. Is their new HC so good? Well everyone thought they had a lot of talent on the roster, so we will get to see for ourselves. Hopefully we will get Cannon, Lewis, and Mason back for this game. At least 2 of them.

21. We have 2 big advantages even though it sucks that we have to play on Thursday. First it's at home. As fast as it seems for us, we don't have to travel. Second this is something like BB's 14th Thursday night game, while its Campbells first. I'm very comfortable that regardless of what happens on the field, the Pats will go in to the short week prepared and with 2 great game plans. Still the Dolphins are a hot team, and will come into Foxboro confident and on an emotional high.

22. On a sad note, I have always like Bill O'Brien as a coach. I liked him when he was here, and I liked him when he was at Penn St. But its been a few years now in Houston, and they look like they are going backwards, not forwards. There is a lot of talent on that team, and while the QB's aren't very good, they are the QB's BOB chose. He could have had the guy we saw play today if he wanted. I think he could be done after the season unless there is a remarkable turnaround.

Also sad to say that it looks like the Pats are better at DT without Vince, as from what I've heard, he hasn't looked that good in Houston and is showing the wear and tear of a long and great career with the Pats. I can't wait to see the Wilfolk family back in NE to get his red jacket.

23. After watching how the Pats played the Jets D, I have no worries about the Bronco's. If the Pats can put 30 point on the Jets with 11 drops, the Bronco's aren't going to be in position to stop the Pats or keep up with them offensively. That assumes the Pats don't have a massive group of turnovers in Denver. The Bengals ARE a legitimate threat, and all the Andy Dalton and Marvin Lewis jokes from the past aren't going to make them go away. The Bengals simply have the healthiest team, with the best individual talent, who are playing as good as any team in the league.

Good, as always. So few players on O, yet still 30pts. That is the story as much as "not getting off the field on 3rd and long".

I think White - while nowheres near 2015 Lewis - is being graded a bit too harshly here. To say that he is under JAG level is a bit low IMO.

Miami on Thursday. Riding high with a new, young coach. Their emotion will meet BB's genius. I see experience prevailing but who knows in the NFL ?

And again, Tannehill has also has stretches were he plays well against the Pats. I expect Thursdays game to be very similar to this game.

Is their new HC so good?

Ken, I'm convinced that he's completely allowed the players to dictate their roles to get their "buy-in".

That will give them a "quick high", but can be exploited by a good coaching staff, and once it is, when the new coach tries to adjust and change those roles the players think they are entitled to - trouble will follow.

ESPN stats says there were 6 drops, as some of the balls were uncatchable.. 3 by LaFell..

I think that the Pats played fine today, not as good as I would like them to, but divisional rivals are always tough..

In 2014 the Pats beat the Jets by a total of 3 points..(27-25, 17-16)
In 2013 the Pats beat the Jets by a total of 6 points ..(13-10, 30-27OT)
In 2012 the Pats beat the Jets by a total of 43 points ..(29-26OT, 49-19)

The point being is that all these games are close, and sometimes we all have short memories..

There are no style points in the NFL, a win is a win is a win.

Wow! Not a fan of BB then? :)

That's just more evidence of how ridiculously flawed the "drops" stat is. Lafell's drops weren't uncatchable. They were legit drops. And, given his post game comments, I'm willing to bet that he'd be the first to admit it.

Can't explain the 3rd down defense today. For as well as this team played on 1st and 2nd down, Im kind of at a loss for words. I guess I'll just credit Fitzpatrick and the receivers for being clutch.

Holding down Ivory who has had his own beast mode show of late was huge. I really needed to see that out of this defense and they really impressed against the run. Having Hightower back really helps solidify this unit.

For them to be able to limit Marshall was surprising to me. Not because I didn't think they could, just I thought they would have to allocate too many sources to stopping the run game.

So in short, BB, Patricia and the other coaches do what they do, take away what you like to do. Of course the players always have to execute to make these guys look like the geniuses they are. I imagine this is why they have odd drafts to some people.

I'm wondering how bad Edelman's hand is. Couple of uncharacteristic drops since dislocating that finger.
Oh...LaFell, accounted for half the drops all by himself today with 6. Forget it and move JoJo.

This game was closer than I would of liked but not as close as it appeared if that makes any sense.

On the surface there is a huge mismatch at the HC'ing postition, not only in coaching experience, but in continuity of systems. However after the emotional wins of the last 2 weeks, there still will be an emotional high that is a positive effect on the Phin, especially in the first half. It's a good thing that this game is at home. That is a help to us, especially if those freakin' assholes who sit in the red seats bother to come from out the bar to cheer. ;)

The bottom line is that these short week games make it more likely for larger swings in player production and execution, for both good and bad. That makes these Thursday game a bit more scary. Unfortunately everyone has to play at least one. On the plus side we can use the 10 days after Thursday to get our team out of this injury funk.

I think you're being incredibly tough on White @patfanken. He may not be what we had hoped he would be, but he was serviceable today. Mind you, Lewis' level of play has made him redundant. It's also another trick up the Pats sleeve for the return match. I can't help but feel he would have shredded the Jets today.

A couple more points, please comment.

First, PatFanKen, like all of us we take Brady for granted. How many other quarterbacks could play a good defense like the Jets and basically abandon the run all day and succeed. Most other quarterbacks need to mix it up or the defense will key on them and beat them. Brady just does it all.

I was also impressed in the first half with Brady saving illegal formation calls. More than once, I heard him say "Danny get back", "Gronk get up". Brady sees it all.

Second, regarding OBrien, I wonder if we'll see a reverse 2012. Josh McDaniels leaves for a head coaching job, OBrien is fired and comes back. I hope not, but the Texans seem to be falling apart and a shake up might happen at the end of the year..

considering we dressed only 18 offensive players, our oline is patchwork and that they were installing plays at 11am this morning, their win is more than you can ask for. People expect the pats to be invincible every week but most teams would fold under this.
Lafell has not faced a gametime simulation all year., his rust was expected. if lewis was active iam not even sure he wouldve been active or gotten so many balls thrown at him.

Good work as usual, Ken.

As to LaFell's drops, he's a veteran WR, but he's also been on PuP so there's been no real game-speed practice time for him except for the past few days.

I'll give him a Mulligan and expect to see him get better over the next couple games, unless BB throws him into the doghouse.

The fact that he was getting open bodes well in my opinion.

BTW I love these Idle Thoughts threads. Look forward to them every week. Big thanks to Patfanken.

One name we haven't mentioned is Pat Chung, who is playing some very good football right now. That signing was met with a lot of groans, but IMO it has turned out to be a smart one.

I agree with you. Numbers aside, it was a great game for them.

Unless my information is wrong (very possible) the Jets O-line had only given up 2 sacks all year long (over 5 games).

The Patriots just matched that.

In context of who we were going up against, I think our d-line's performance against this o-line was outstanding.
