Many (with notable exceptions) think the Patriots will go ILB early in this draft but Willis will be gone and Harris might not quite be worth a first-rounder--that seems to leave Lawrence Timmons and Jon Beason (I guess I just don't buy Posluszny as first-round talent). Can someone convince me that either of these guys fit the Patriots system? They both seem like 4-3 OLBs to me--both athletic guys less than 6'1" that seem to be better at running around blockers than taking on guards.

Yes, I know that the Patriots gave up 32 points the last half they played and this was partially due to a lack of athleticism at the ILB positions. But, there were many factors that day (Vrabel's back, safeties out, Colvin out, Seymour injured, etc.)--you can't convince me that one half of football is going to change BB's concept of what he's looking for at ILB in his system.

So, do either of these guys actually fit BB's system or are all the mocks with the Patriots taking these guys just putting a LB against the Patriots need?

Nope, I sure can't. I really like Timmons in particular, but I can't seem him on this team. Just hoping he doesn't fall to the Colts, he'd be terrific for them.

4-3 OLB are usually converted in an ILB in the 3-4 DEF. They could be interesting replacement to Bruschi at WILB. At that position, you don't need to be that big. Your main fonction include coverage, so you need someone with "athletism"

Of course, David Harris seems more ready to play at this position but he provide less upside than Timmons and Beason. I would be satisfied with Harris, but I would not dislike the potential of Beason and Timmons.

Size doesnt matter..we've looked at Vilma before..Ernie Sims to name a couple.

If hes a baller..hes a baller. Beason is a sideline to sideline guy..hits..quick and fast on the field. Hard worker and a leader.

Patriots brought them both in..Patriots.com and Reiss are HIGH on Beason.

Beason would be fine. He is athletic, fast and a good football player.

Tedy Bruschi played down DE in college. Vrabel was an OLB all the way, and both have played exceptionally well at ILB.

If BB thinks Beason is "football smart" enough to make the transition, I would tend to agree.

It doesn't matter, Everyone is predicting Pat's will take LB/CB in 1st round, which means they will probably pick up some stud C and another RB.;)

I don't know if either Simmons or Beason fit our system. I don't think the Pats will actually draft either guy. I think the Pats go secondary with the first pick assuming one of the better guys is available and try to trade down with the 28th pick and take Harris in second.

his name is Timmons.

Did you watch Vilma last year? He really struggled playing inside on the 3-4. His tackles were down by 59 tackles last year and a lot of his tackles were further down the field. Most Jets fans will tell you he did not have a good year under Mangini's system.

With the Belichick 3-4 defense, size is very important. The ILB is asked to take the guard on quite a bit more than in other defenses. Smaller guys tend to not be able to shed blocks from guards. That was one of Monty Beisel's biggest problems in our offense.

Sideline to sideline and speed is far less important to our defense than most others. In the 3-4 the ILB is required to cover less sideline to sideline coverage anyway. We need size, intelligence, and instincts more than speed.

My bad. It was a typo. Used to typinh Simmons more than Timmons. I know his name just a force of habit.

Bruschi is listed at 6'1" 247 lbs
Beason is listed at 6'0" 237 lbs

yeah but its not all Vilma's fault..you need to have a good DL in front of you. Which we do.. plus u cant expect his 1st year to be so great in a 3-4 where hes never played. Thats why bringing in a rookie he doesnt need to start right away

As part of his annual predraft scouting trip to Florida, Patriots coach Bill Belichick spent "quite a bit of time" with Florida State linebacker Ernie Sims. Belichick came away impressed, but the Lions ended up snatching Sims at No. 9, well before the Patriots picked (21st). Sims enters today's game against the Patriots with a team-high 109 tackles and has several of the qualities the Patriots generally seek. "He's a football guy. Business. Very competitive. Very intense," said Belichick, noting that even though Sims is undersized at 6 feet, 225 pounds, he still could have fit in the middle of a 3-4 defense. "I think football is important to him and he plays like it on the field. Every play he's after you."

Watching his profile piece on Comcast On Demand I became convinced that Beason was the guy the Patriots should draft. I didn't even really watch any other profiles for any other players. If the Patriots can draft Beason and don't, I will change my name to Peyton Manning.

I feel the same way about him as I did about Adalius Thomas after watching him the Pro Bowl.

a Chicago fan tried to change his name..judge said NO

Beason himself claims that many scouts - not naming the Patriots' staff in particular, but MULTIPLE people - have told him he was a good fit for ILB in the 3-4. So there's that.

Take Anthony Spencer with #24 for an OLB, and trade dwn get a pick and take E Weddle ar S.

Smart guys with great productivity in college. Patriot kind of guys.

we need an inside backer a lot more than outside. Bruschi isnt that good of a starter anymore if hes playing strongside..Vrabel is more of an OLB but can play inside..Thomas's skills are better for outside although he would be nie on inside..it limits his pass rush

My point exactly. Bruschi has 10 pounds on Beason. Big difference at ILB. Beason might be able to add bulk, but he is too small at his current weight.
