Pats draft QB Jimmy Garropolo from Eastern Illinois in the 2nd round

My only problem with this pick is that he's barely over .500 as a starter in the FCS. Can he win in the NFL?

Ya, that is my worry too.

Every year is the deepest draft in years.

That's why I said supposedly, but that doesn't change the fact that this year's team has not improved through three rounds of the draft,

Well if it is the deepest draft in years, we should improve over the next 4 rounds.

Our first round pick scares me the most. You have to hit on your 1's and Easleys knees worry me. Kid is a beast when healthy tho.

Jamie Collins played for an 0-for Southern Miss team.

Unique strategy. Use the bottom of the draft to improve, and use the top three rounds for a back up QB and dual knee-braced recovery project. Now starting in week week 4 at DT for the NEP - Joe Velano.

We should just dig up the Mallet thread when we took him in the 3rd round. Copy and paste the same argument why we picked him at the time.

There aren't nearly as many obvious, glaring weaknesses as we seem to think, and the choice of Garappolo was too good to pass up. The backup/potential future QB position is extremely important. It's not just all about "2014."

It seems as though Belichick views the draft as a bit of a luxury, due to our having most of the starters under contract through past drafts and other avenues. I would imagine that we'll see some day #3 picks at OL, front seven, and "bonus" selections such as RB/S/WR/etc.

The only thing that I'm a bit disappointed in would be the lack of a TE, but that could be addressed tomorrow with Arthur Lynch (hopefully).

I added a edit to my views on our 1. I am worried about Easley. I am honestly am not a fan in general of this draft. With the influx of juniors, there is a lot of projects. We will see, like I said I am not to happy with us taking a QB with a second round pick. But I also did not see many impact players that we could have taken either.

Only time will tell, and i understand the frustration with our picks so far. As I am a bit frustrated too.

So you're going to throw out what he accomplished in his senior year? 5,000+ yards. And his team only lost once in a game where he threw for 450 yards and 6 TDs.

"Named the Walter Payton Award winner, given to top player in FCS, in 2013 after going 375-of-568 (66.0 percent) for 5,050 yards with 53 TDs and nine INTs in 14 contests. Threw for 450 yards and six touchdowns in the Panthers' only regular-season loss, to Northern Illinois. Is one of only two quarterbacks to throw for more than 5,000 yards in a season (Taylor Heinicke, 2012) in FCS history. Was named the Offensive MVP of the East-West Shrine Game."

Why the hell would Joe Vellano have to start at DT in week 4?

As a matter of fact, I doubt myself that Vellano even makes the team again. He served his purpose when there weren't any other options, but the talent should be improved enough with the return of Kelly, Wilfork, and Armstead.

I hate this pick. He is going to take my holding job on extra points and Field Goals.

Three guys coming off injury-riddled seasons to mentor a rookie coming off an injury-riddled college career.

Both Easley and Garappalo are most likely future prospects. Belichick plans ahead on a consistent enough basis that we really shouldn't be quite as surprised as we are. This team is built to stay competitive in the future, and Kraft/BB have always kept a close eye on the future.

The selection of Easley allows us to have the all important 5th yr option, so even if he only contributes on a bit of a rotational role in 2014, he will likely still have 4 more solid years after that.

Okay, but that still doesn't answer the question about Joe Vellano. I am surprised that you see him even making the team.

Out of those "3 injury riddled seasons," you don't see ANY of them able to contribute this year? On the DL, we have Chandler Jones, Ninkovich, Wilfork, Kelly, Armstead, Chris Jones, Buchanon, etc, etc...on top of that, we still have time to likely select another player or two, and will probably pick up another cap casualty. The DTs aren't in bad enough shape to warrant a Joe Vellano sighting for 2014.

I'm assuming that Easley won't make much of a contribution until at least Nov or so. It's quite possible that I am wrong, but I see him being slowly blended into a rotational role once he's fully healthy. It was much more of a pick for the future than this year. That said, I know nothing about the specifics of his injury situation, but either way--I am not personally viewing it as an immediate 2014 type of selection. If I'm wrong it will be a pleasant way of being wrong. I am cautiously optimistic, as my good friend ausbacker would say.

You don't get "luxury" picks when you had your ass handed to you in the playoffs.

Yup, I agree with you. My posts above where in the context of drafting impact players.

Jesus, did you just delete from your memory our FA aqusitions this year?

Actually has a quick release, but not a strong arm. If you're looking for 60 yard bombs, you're gonna see a lot of under throws.

Brady will show him how to do it. /sarc off

A 32 yr old, 350 lb NT coming off an achilles, a 33 yr old, Raiders castoff who's play was declining prior to a knee injury and an injury-riddled CFL player who's never played a down in the NFL. Now starting at DT in week 4 for your NEP, Joe Vellano. I'm sure he's a "high character guy who loves football". The New England Patriots have managed to go three rounds without improving their 2014 team. Tough to do.
