Report: Rob Gronkowski To Take His Time Rehabbing Torn ACL For Patriots | NESN.com

I could see the forearm issue last year because I didn't want the team to rush him back, given the complications. But this is a different issue and plenty of football players at skill positions are back for Week 1 after suffering a torn ACL. Barring a setback (doesn't sound like there is one, by all reports Gronk is on schedule), I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be out there Week 1.

The fact that he allegedly feels it's ok for his teammates to risk their career and bodies but he doesn't feel the urgency pisses me off to no end.

If he really pulls this again he will really go down several notches in my book.

Before we kill Gronk let's see if he even misses any preseason games never mind regular season games.

For the people criticizing him for wanting to take his time let me ask you do you want him I'm September or January?
It's that simple a fully healthy Gronkowski makes this a different team and much harder to defend.
I don't mind him wanting to make sure he is at his full strength before he steps a foot on the practice field he doesn't need the reps Brady knows and trusts him.
Add a Ebron or a ASJ or a Lyera a talented compliment at tight end and Gronk is in full beast mode.
Release the Gronk!

I doubt he participates during the preseason, so him missing those games would not surprise me. But, given what's been reported about his recovery being on schedule, I would be surprised if he missed any regular season games.

As I said on the other thread, he's going to be this decade's Antwan Harris. Remember him, the DB whose nickname in the clubhouse was "Puddin'" because he was so soft ? I shouldn't say anything until the season begins but if this is true, he's the softest big guy ever. The arm was one thing as it was somewhat mysterious and unusual. Torn ACL ? Barring setbacks he has plenty of time to get ready based on other players.

Say it 'ain't so Gronk. Meow.

Did I miss something? I am hoping he doesn't play until the playoffs, at which point we can pray he's healthy until the first quarter of the Super Bowl =). I'm just kidding- it's frustrating to have a guy like that on the sidelines, but let's not frustration over some unfortunate breaks cloud our judgement.

I want Gronk back as soon as I get him. Even if he sits out the entire year and comes back only in the last half or few weeks of the season, there is no guarantee that he won't get injured again. And, as you say, a fully healthy Gronk makes the Pats harder to defend so he should be out there as soon as he's ready to go, barring any unreported complications. And no to Lyerla.

Given last year's "situation" nothing would surprise me when it comes to him missing games. We need another TE badly - even if Gronk doesn't get hurt (and he likely will) there's no guarantee he'll play when most would.

Funny, waiting until more than halfway through the season didn't mean we had Gronk in the playoffs last year. But if he'd come back sooner it may have won us an extra game that would have gotten us home field in the AFCCG.

I think people need to stop expecting AP type recoveries year one, and instead look at Rg3.

Similar injuries, two entirely different 1st years back. I'd rather gronk take his time and come back 100% then come back at 75% and not be strong enough/agile enough to avoid another 260lb Line backer launching helmet first at his knee.

Wow. Everyone seems to have the book on Gronk. I am one of the few who thinks the guy is pretty darn tough. He has played at an elite level though various back injuries and doesn't miss a step. When he takes the field, he's almost always 100% in his intensity and level of play. When he came back last year, he was awesome. He played a Super Bowl on a high ankle sprain, ran all his routes, blocked, and played the entire game.

I would equate "soft" with a guy who is always out because of a muscle pull or bruise. I've yet to see a time when Gronk didn't play because of one of these nagging injuries. Sorry for all the bad luck he's had, but let's not revise history here. The guy's forearm bent sideways which caused him to miss the second half of 2012. When he returned (ahead of schedule), the forearm broke in half. Was he supposed to play through that? In 2013, reports were that his forearm was not fully healed (the forearm he broke twice less than a year prior), and his doctor advised him not to play until it was stable enough. Was it worth risking his career to get back faster for some regular season game? Then he tore his ACL on a brutal, devastating hit that absolutely no one would have survived. He's going to take awhile to come back. Welker tore his ACL in the last game in 2009, and he missed training camp and wasn't 100% for the entire season. It took Brady almost a full year to regain his mobility.

Sorry, but I don't think Gronk is soft. He has been the victim of some brutal injuries. Whether or not those injuries ultimately derail his career is another question. I'm hoping he can recover and get back to being one of the very best players in the NFL, which he is when healthy.

Last year I would laugh at and mock those who said the Pats should hold off Gronk until the playoffs so he can be 100% when it matters most. This year my view has changed entirely, mostly due to Gronk once again sustaining another season ending injury and also due to the fact that Percy Harvin showed you do not need to play in the regular season in order to be ready for the playoffs.

Hold him off until the playoffs.

I don't know why your opinion changed. The "shelf him until later in the season" argument was proven to be wrong.

He's tough physically, not mentally. He's scared of getting injured. We saw it in the Jacksonville game in his first game back from his original broken arm. It was shocking to see a big stud playing so soft to protect himself. I haven't played football in a long time (HS was a long time ago) so I have no right to judge him - but I will anyway. He's soft mentally when it comes to getting hurt. But when he does get banged up, he is tough in terms of playing through pain.

Ebron in the 1st it is!

In all srsness, It will really change the way I look at Gronk if he's not out there week 1.

That's not my argument. my argument is "shelf him until the playoffs."

I don't agree. Thousands of Pats fans pay small fortunes for season tix and millions more watch the games to see the best players. Gronk could be injured just as easily if he came in to play the PO's but he was not sharp and a bit rusty. If I want to watch mediocre players I can dig out old VHS tapes of the 90's teams.

Argument is still invalid. He made it through an entire, record setting season in 2011 and got injured in the AFCCG, making him a little more than a decoy (or a ******* decoy, as the Giants defenders put it). Football players get injured sometimes. That could happen whether it's in a regular season setting or in the playoffs. Sorry, but it's mind boggingly stupid to shelf your best players for the playoffs for fear of injury. By that logic, Brady, Mayo, Revis, Mankins, McCourty, and Wilfork should all be shelved until the playoffs.

I don't think what week he actually comes back is the problem it's the idea that he isn't going to rush back. He should want to and be doing everything humanly possible to get back as soon as possible. It's not how much time it takes but the idea he will take his time.
