Darrelle Revis Rumors and Speculation

Are teams allowed to go over the cap in pre-season as long as they are below the cap by the season opener? Hypothetical: Team only has $10M cap space. They want to sign player A who's going to cost $15M. They plan to release player B who's cap hit is $5M. Does the team need to release player B before signing player A?

who says the wallet wouldnt get open? its 16million$ real money...but the cap hit is 5.6million$ if you convert his salary into a bonus.

Rumour has it that we are the frontrunner for Revis

yeah they can do that. I think they WILL do just that(although maybe not for Revis) too. I see a scenario unfolding where they make Wilfork restructure, or they cut him. I mean, I love big Vince, but there really isn't a lot of rushing teams left in the NFL and we only have one in our division, Buffalo. I just do not see them as a threat. Vince Wilfork is going to cost us 11.5m on the cap this year and a restructure, or cut will blow open our cap space to enable us to sign pretty much anyone.

I think our only viable option right now is to go get Revis period. Then probably Steve Smith AND Hakeem Nicks AND this years draft is FILLED with tremendous WR talent. Our major problem at this point is our secondary. We need Revis plain and simple.

The rest has to be paid at some point.

Now if we dont sign revis. Will the forum blow up again?

They could convert some of his money to bonus so it would only cost 2M on the cap this year but will cost us a 5th round pick...which I am definitely ok with.

It IS the Pats though, signing Revis is a damn pipe dream(I pray I am wrong)

Ian Rapaport just reported that the Patriots are interested in trading for Revis.

Which makes a lot of sense to me.

You trade for him, you control him and his restructure.

You threaten to cut him at the start of the season, or to carry his $16m for a year, and you see if it clarifies his mind a little bit about a $13m a year deal.

Trading for him by giving up a 6th or 7th isn't a bad idea.

Will take a 5th round if we convert any of his salary to bonus.

Oh yeah. Posters will either foam at the mouth with rage or will talk themselves into believing that Revis is not that good anyway and that they're glad the Pats didn't take on the contract he gets.

He also has a history of going to the highest bidder. All things considered, it's extremely difficult, if not impossible, to see him coming here.

Playing for a year down in Tampa may change his mind about that.

Re: Darrelle Revis Available

I would rather spend more money and get a horse to go to war with rather than a bunch of ponies.

how has spending money on a bunch of ponies worked out for us? fanaene, kelly, haynesworth, arrington

If we are trotting Logan ryan out there opposite demarious thomas next year I bet we have the same results as this year.

Wait till we don't sign revis, and the Broncos sign Ware..

To even have any kind of hope that the Patriots would sign Revis, you must also believe in Santa Claus.

And then we replace Edelman w/Lafell.

I think that would be a legitimate reason for the forum to "blow up" no? Denver will have drastically improved their defense and their offense will still be a force. Meanwhile we lost our top CB (to Denver no less) and we still don't have our top receiver under contract. There isn't much else out there that we can get should Allen and Ware be scooped up. As far as improving through the draft, we've seen this team fail miserably over the years at trying to do so.

So yes, signing Revis has become a necessity. Even if we get him though, we have still lost ground to Denver. A team that manhandled us in the playoffs.

Agreed, we kind of have to sign Revis. It sucks that Denver just got a lot better, if they get Ware, they could have a dominant D-Line and not too mention the impact that Talib can have on a game. Revis would give BB a weapon to play on defense.
