Now, by "both sides" you mean both sides of the Patriots, offense and defense right? Because there's no way in hell that helps Houston in any way.

the only way we are getting a 1, 2 and 3 for trading a qb is if we take a lowball offer for brady.

I agree. I think if Belichick knows that O'Brien thinks Mallett is a franchise QB in waiting (assuming he does) that he can get far more than market value for Mallett from the Texans, but it will take Mallett and most of the Pats' draft to get the #1 draft pick overall.

Even if Mallett is considered a likely franchise QB, the fact is that he's proven exactly nothing in the NFL and needs a new deal. That makes him worth a second round pick at best, and if I'm the Pats I make that deal. Too many holes elsewhere on the roster, and it's not like Belichick's shown an aversion to trading in circumstances where the traded player didn't have an immediately apparent successor. Just look at the Seymour trade.

i heard sanchez is going to be available.

How much would jetland explode if sanchez came here, had to play, and led the team over geno and the jets

If BB trades Mallet for the #33 or even the #65 + a 7th and he becomes a franchise top QB, there will be nothing to regret, the trade was made on the right terms. On the other hand if Mallet becomes a bust then will be a brilliant move by BB.

I think we have nothing to lose basically, the Texans have.

The Browns will draft Manziel, Hoyer will be available.

Shoot me before that happens
That would truly signify The End Times

If you must have an equitable situation here is a trade that helps both sides. Mallett for Houstons's 1, 2, and 3 and we send them our 3 and 4. We have enough to fill our needs including trading a low pick for Hoyer or Cassell. Pats get Clowney, a TE, a WR and an OL with our four picks

Did you actually write that with a straight face?

I read yesterday that a GM has said that if the Jets release Sanchez he would go after him to be the starter.

I'm trying to figure out who is this moron.

He's sold on Mallett being not only the heir to Brady, but a co-starter toward the end of Brady's career.

What's a co-starting QB, you ask? Exactly.

The new headcoach of the... wherever the **** ken whisenhunt just signed, knows what a co-starting QB is.

As much **** as we give Sanchez, lets not forget that he was decent enough to take them to 2 AFCCG in his first two seasons. I think the Jets asked too much of him and he kind of just cracked but in don't think his career is completely shot. If he can go to a team with a decent supporting cast on offense and a coach who can develop QB's (ie the anti-rex) he can turn into a decent QB. Lets not forget Flacco won a superbowl.

Only team that comes to mind is the jaguars.

Sad as it sounds, I probably WOULD take Sanchez over Gabbert. Of course, I'd probably just run a wildcat with Dan Connolly as the back before taking either of them.

I read all ten pages of this thread. Excellent job, Excellent discussion. Some comments on the comments.

Hey Ken, if you go to your User CP, hit Edit Options, scroll down to Thread Display Options and find Number of Posts to Show Per Page you can change it to 40.

Just a tip from one oldtimer to another.:)

Sanchez was Dilfered into those AFCCGs. He sucked as a rookie. He sucked as a sophomore. He's sucked ever since.

This popular thought that Brian Hoyer definitely will be available is a bit of a reach in assumptions, no?

If I'm CLE, I'm keeping Brian Hoyer for sure--he may even have to start if the rookie pick isn't ready, and they were in 1st place after 6 weeks of the season with Hoyer as the starter this year.

If you listen to the new coach, he doesn't sound like one who is definitely going to be sending Hoyer out the door, and I don't know why he would:

"I think he's a winner,'' said Pettine. "I think the intangibles with Brian are off the charts. I think he's a football junky and I think you can tell he loves the game. He came from a system where he learned from the best in the game and that showed on the field. A lot of people, based on his background, kind of fall asleep on him a little bit. I think he's a winning quarterback in this league.''

Which is really strange imo because AZ has always been a reall y good poster with common sense.

AZ is a good poster.

His opinion on Ryan Mallett's potential to be re-signed next season and the future franchise QB has been, well....exclusive---although constant.

While the odds are extremely low of that happening due to many different circumstances, it's possible that he may end up getting the last laugh, even if none of us agree with him ;)

As much as I favor the outcome of the Seymour trade the Patriots have had a significant need at DE since Richard Seymour. Chandler Jones looks a fine talent but he's no Seymour (and no, I don't use statistics to support this).

The Pats must beef up their DL this offseason. Actually, the Pats need to reinforce both lines if they're going to get over the January hump.

not happening its the first pick in the 2th round for a QB who has never played a meaningful down of football in the NFL. just knowing this system is not a nuff to just pass on Teddy Bridgewater, or Johnny Manziel, and let it all ride on Mallet

This rationale make little sense when prospects like Christian Ponder, who had never played a meaningful professional down in their life either, gets drafted at 15. As insists with franchises and QB's, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and O'Brien has intimate first hand experience with Mallet, even if not in real game action. An argument can be made that Mallet has more true talent at the QB than any prospect in this fairly weak QB draft and there are bound to be 3 that go in the top ten. And now he's had 3 years learning in a Pats system under Brady. If O'Brien is confident, to me, that's less risky than rolling the dice on some kid coming out of college where the bust rate is high even on the highly drafted.
